SKOWHEGAN, Maine — Dylan Perkins, the man who escaped from Somerset County Jail in Madison on Monday, was taken into custody without incident while at a Skowhegan hospital on Saturday afternoon.
Perkins, 20, was at Redington-Fairview Hospital with a family member at 4:50 p.m. Saturday, according to Somerset County Sheriff’s Department Detective Lt. Carl E. Gottardi II.
Perkins alerted an off-duty Skowhegan police officer that he was in the hospital. He was taken into custody by Skowhegan police and Somerset County deputies without incident.
“Once Perkins is medically cleared at the hospital, he will be transported back to the Somerset County Correctional Facility,” said Gottardi in a statement.
Perkins, a minimum-security inmate, was unloading a truck with other inmates when he ran away on Monday afternoon. He scaled a 15-foot-high fence and ran into the woods. The fence was in a nonsecurity area with no razor wire.
“We have a truck that comes in and unloads goods to the kitchen,” Maj. David Allen, Somerset County Jail administrator, said on Monday. “Given his [minimum security] status, he unloads those trucks. While unloading the trucks he took off on foot.”
Perkins was brought to Somerset County Jail on April 29 after having his probation revoked for eluding a police officer. He was set to be released on July 27.
“Now he’s facing a felony escape charge with up to five years in prison,” Allen said.
He escaped and a couple days later turned himself in from a hospital? Thats it? That’s all we know. Come on now BDN. Don’t post a story until its actually a story. There’s some good meat on these bones, let me at it!
I used to live near a men’s hoosegow. Every now and again, one would slip out. They’d usually find him under a bed, in a closet, and once: in a refrigerator. But I never heard of an escapee seeking refuge in a hospital.
