SANFORD, Maine — A teenager was killed Friday afternoon when he was struck by a vehicle while skateboarding, police said.
Corey Cabana, 15, of Sanford was crossing Lebanon Street near the Nason Street intersection when he was struck by a commercial vehicle, according to a news release Monday from Sanford Police Chief Thomas Connolly Jr.
Cabana was taken to Goodall Hospital in Sanford and then airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he later died.
The accident remains under investigation.

The article said he was near an intersection and didn’t say he was in the crosswalk. It also said he was skateboarding and not walking. He could have been boarding down the road and suddenly decided to cross. I’ve been in well marked crosswalks and traffic doesn’t always stop. The pedestrian is responsible to determine if it’s safe to cross and not just blindly walk into the roadway.
Actually you’re wrong. The way the laws are written the driver is supposed to proceed with caution at all cross walks, regardless of whether a pedestrian is present or not. A pedestrian always has the right of way in a crosswalk regardless of whether they are walking/riding/biking/boarding unless there is a Walk/Don’t Walk sign present.

um, actually vehicles need to yield, pedestrians have the right of way in a marked crosswalk when traffic control devices are not in operation. This is from laws at Maine.gov…so…

You forgot to look up the meaning of the word “pedestrian”…A person on a bike follows the same rules as cars and not allowed on sidewalks..Neither are skateboards..From dictionary.com…pedestrian..

Ok the article does not state if he was in a crosswalk or not so lets just stop. Think of it this way maybe your child was skateboarding, walking, biking etc and you are reading this where people are arguing about if he was in a crosswalk?? I feel horrible for the family of the teen and the driver of the vehicle. Lets just say we are sorry for the loss and I am sure that the driver didnt do this on purpose crosswalk or not! My heart goes out to both families.

It doesn’t matter what he is or isn’t responsible for..it doesn’t matter what laws there are…he made an error in judgement and died because of it..have some compassion for his family and those he left behind

The roads were around before cars were dirt (some still are) and are not skateboardable.
They make skateboards for dirt, you obviously don’t know much about out door activities for someone using that silly name.
I think outdoorsnut meant that the roads that existed before cars were not able to be skateboarded upon, and since cars didn’t exist, neither did modern skateboards made for going on dirt.

In Bangor there are no sidewalks to get to the old building foundation skate slab park. I’m surprized this type tragic accident doesn’t happen more often

actually, midcoastconservative isn’t as wrong as you say.. Cities can choose to have their own ordinances which say that cyclists cannot ride on sidewalks:
“Sidewalk riding is not prohibited by state law, only by local ordinance if it exists.”
I half agree with midcoastconservative. Cyclists should, generally, stick to shoulders and the right portion of the roadway. I do not believe it is safe to skateboard in the street, and thus, should be confined to the sidewalk.
I said there is no sidewalk on the way to the park for people to walk on. to get there they must walk on the road. which is very dangerous on Maine Avenue. trafic is fast. sorry you misunderstood me.

My brother from sanford told me about that and it was a Dump truck that ran him over (which does not stop on the dime). I’ve lived in sanford for 20 years and kids think they have the right of way in the roads which not true but we as drivers need to be defensive behind the wheel regardless

Crosswalk or not you have to stop and look both ways before crossing..Cars and especially trucks can’t stop on a dime…Common sense…Expecting cars to treat crosswalks like stop signs regardless of anyone walking or zipping out on a skateboard is fool hardy and not what the law says…If you see somebody standing at a crosswalk waiting to cross you are supposed to stop and let them cross…It doesn’t mean you can just walk out into traffic without looking….
Nothing more heart breaking than the loss of a child, a sibling, or a childhood friend.
The hardest part is in the beginning, when it is like an emotional earthquake. Feels like the whole world should just stop but it doesn’t, it goes on with the trivial activities of day-to-day living and leaves you with hurt and loss from the absence of someone who was once a part of your life.
Try hard to remember the good times and what made this boy the better part of who he was. God Bless.
