PORTLAND, Maine — U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, announced Wednesday that the Greater Portland Metro bus service has been awarded $2 million in federal grant money to replace aging buses.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s State of Good Repair program grant is enough to replace five of the service’s buses, according to Pingree’s announcement.

“This will be a big help as Metro seeks to replace aging buses,” said Pingree in a statement. “With gas prices the way they are, this kind of investment in public transportation is critical. More and more people these days are looking for opportunities to leave their car at home and Metro helps make that happen. This federal funding will help Metro buy new buses so it can maintain service without extra costs for local taxpayers.”

  1. this state needs an entire transportation overhaul if we are to be competitive in the US markets, we have no real ports to speak of, we are the end of the road (literally and figuratively), we have more coastline than california yet, we have no major ports shipping US & canadian goods to the UK, and other countrys across the pond… if we had a major rail system overhaul, maybe PORTland could be a PORT again.. thus creating jobs, having greater impact than replacing 5 busses..

  2. Buying votes.  Good thing northern Maine’s infrastructure is fine.  Southern Maine is so hurting.

    1. The majority of folks ” from away ” in southern Maine ( North Boston ) have caused that portion of the state to move away from ” the way life should be ” to the ” way we do it in the city “.  It’s sad that people move to Maine for our lifestyle and quickly try to change it !

  3. Incidentally, since Maine gets back ‘only’ 1.4 times as much from Washington as it sends there, that two million we ‘get’ requires us to send 1.42 million there. And of course we’re sending them money so they can buy other buses for other cities in other states, too. Not quite the bargain it looked, eh?
