ORONO – Nydda B. Lowery, 84, died peacefully, July 16, 2012, surrounded by her loving family in Bangor. Nydda was a gracious loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many. She was born Jan. 22, 1928, in Houlton, daughter of Emerald Jasper and Ruth H. (Wilkins) Barker.
Nydda and her husband, L eland Lowery, celebrated 62 years of marriage April 9, 2012. Nydda graduated summa cum laude from Colby College in 1949, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. Her erudition served her well in her hobbies of scrabble, crosswords and jumbles. Nydda also enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening and knitting with her friends. An avid sports fan, she followed University of Maine sports teams. Nydda sang with Sweet Adelines and in many church choirs. She especially enjoyed family vacations at East Grand Lake. All who knew her, and many who did not, were touched daily by her kindness, patience and love.
Nydda is also survived by her brother, Elwood Barker and wife, Barbara, of Farmingdale; brother, Richard Barker and companion, Carmeline Dickinson, of Easton; brother-in-law, Carlton Lowery and wife, Loretta, of Florida; son, Steven Lowery and wife, Tammy, of High Rolls, N.M.; daughter, Susan Hamlin of Liberty, N.Y.; son, Michael Lowery and wife, Kathryn, of Delmar, N.Y.; son, Kenneth Lowery of Monticello; daughter, Christine and husband Roscoe Perham II, of Greenfield, Mass.; grandchildren, Ian Lowery, and wife, Katie, David Hamlin and wife, Vanessa, Colleen DeCiel and husband, Christopher, Erik Lowery and wife, Jennifer, Kurt Lowery, and Maxwell, Thomas and Helen Perham; and great-grandchildren, Kayden and Brenna Hamlin, Christoher DeCiel Jr., Hannah Lightfoot, and Penelope Lowery. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Jeanne and husband, Robert Clark, and Joyce and husband, Irving Maddocks; and son-in-law, Keith T. Hamlin.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m., Thursday, July 19, at Church of Universal Fellowship, Orono, with Pastor Steven Smith officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments after the service at church fellowship hall.
