BANGOR, Maine — Four offices located in the Coe Building between Columbia and Main streets were burglarized overnight after the close of business Friday, bringing to seven the total number of businesses in a relatively small area which have been hit in the last four weeks.
Just five days after thieves broke into Northstar Photography on Columbia Street and stole $3,800 worth of equipment — and almost four weeks after a break-in at Sweetest Thing Studio just two doors down on Columbia resulted in $4,000 in equipment and cash taken — burglars struck four business offices inside the Coe Building late Friday night or early Saturday morning.
“It’s actually more than that. There have been some other burglaries in the area that haven’t been reported,” said Paul Cook, owner of Maine Real Estate Management. “I’ve also had issues at 21 Main St. [office building] with vandalism and burglary and I know both the Aware Center [on 61 Main St.] and Antique Marketplace and Cafe [65 Main] have had burglaries.”
Cook, whose company manages the Coe Building, also uses an office inside. That office was one of the four that was burglarized.
“It’s frustrating. There’s been a lot of damage,” said Cook, who considered himself lucky to have had only $200 in cash stolen. “This building was built in 1928 and there’s a lot of original woodwork and architecture, and they’re ripping door jambs off, breaking windows, and there’s some vandalism, too.”
The three other businesses which were broken into this weekend were Pulse Marketing Agency, Paul Trommer’s real estate office, and Hometown Newspapers, which publishes periodicals such as the Northwoods Sporting Journal.
“It’s all the same block, despite the different addresses,” said Cook, who has been in the real estate management business for 20 years. “I’d defer to the police on who’s doing it, but the behavior and area seems to indicate it’s got to be the same group of people.”
Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards wouldn’t comment on the burglaries, saying only that it was an ongoing investigation. He had no updates on the ongoing case Sunday evening and said there might be further information available Monday morning.
“Officers told me they assume it’s the same group of people doing this,” said Cintia Miranda, owner of Pulse Marketing Agency, which is physically located at 61 Main St. with a 50 Columbia St. mailing address. “They must be on foot, too, because they only take smaller stuff they can carry.
“When we were checking to see what was missing, we found another laptop that wasn’t ours in one of our drawers. Apparently they swapped one of ours for one they’d already taken from another business.”
The burglars appear to be targeting portable electronic equipment like laptops, iPads and cameras, as well as cash.
“They took our best computers, left two older ones, [and took] a professional media camcorder and an electronic photo camera,” said Miranda, who was notified of the break-ins at 7 a.m. Saturday.
About $4,000 worth of equipment was stolen from both Pulse and Hometown Newspapers, and $2,000 in damage was done inside the building.
While she does have insurance and all of her Web files are securely stored on an outside server, Miranda says her three-year-old business’ four-member staff has been severely hampered due to the loss of crucial equipment.
“I have some personal computers at home which I will bring in to work in the meantime. I don’t have the camera equipment, so if I got a job to shoot commercial footage, I wouldn’t be able to do it,” she said.
Both Cook and Miranda have voiced concerns over safety and security in the area even before this most recent burglary.
“Thursday I talked to Paul and voiced by concerns with safety and security at this building and I set up an appointment with ADT to install a security system,” said Miranda, who said she has also conveyed her concerns to Bangor City Councilor and Mayor Cary Weston. “Stuff I’ve seen in the area, and with Pickering Square and how we sometimes get harassed by some of the people over there concerns me.
Police officers were still on site investigating the break-ins late Saturday afternoon. Miranda said they thoroughly fingerprinted the office and were very helpful.
“I know the police have their hands full and their staff level is down, but it really is hurting us, and it’s hurting the idea of downtown,” Cook said. “It’s a major issue.”
Cook is optimistic the culprits will be found, however.
“I’m extremely confident we’ll find a solution and get a break in this before too long,” he said.

Ummm – downtown and Pickering Square are both only steps from the police station. I’d say it’s about time to get some patrols going in the downtown area.
These probably happened in the overnight hours, I am sure what few cops on duty they had were probably responding to a stabbing or someone hit in the road that late in the day. Patrols in downtown areas happen in the small towns and communities, not them big cities that have no crime problems.
This story can not be right, its talking about crime in Bangor
The second false article the BDN has published this weekend with regards to crime in Bangor. I can not believe this kind of stuff is being published when the Police Dept says there is no crime problem in Bangor. I thought newspapers validated their sources first, who is to say the station wasn’t taken over by criminals impersonating officers when the media calls? Reporting these kinds of stories will only hurt the BDN further…wheres Edwards, where is the Chief? I demand a press conference to get this cleared up!
omg route you crack me up but its true, where are they coming up with this information
Then we need more cops working at night.
And I am sure that the taxpayers want to pay for that! They are much more interested in paying for the methadone clinics that are causing all the problems to start with! I say ban methadone clinics and drugs, them we can have the money for the PD. Not that it will matter though, they will bust them and the Judge and the DA will have them out in a month to do it again. This system sucks!
Well then I’m glad you are not in charge of anything, because that’s a lousy idea. Want to see crime rate skyrocket in this town? Start pulling opiate addicts off of the medication that is keeping them having to use street drugs.
The medication we are giving them is being sold on the street as a “street drug”. You aren’t doing anything with this program but succumbing to criminal blackmail with the same result. You keep paying off your blackmailer for the rest of your life.
I’m surprised you’re not advocating bulldozing.
Ya know, I find it way to amusing to even think that you are being serious. You are definately my number one source of entertainment on here. I think you are a lot of other peoples as well. Them people sell that suboxone and go and get the real thing. Lets say….I am an alcoholic….are you going to approve me having a different kind of alcholic beer to get me off my Michelob?? I should obviously be able to drive because they can after their fix. The are so few people who actually use that for what it is intended it makes me sick….I know this because I know the ones in jail for it. You need to take off your shades buddy.
I wish you were in charge, because that is a great idea, promethadonians always say the same thing, if you get rid of them is it will only get worse, what they don’t say is ” we have added more clinics and crime has already gotten worse!
I bet if I send Gaista an email (and he actually responds) that we will be informed there is plenty of patroling that takes place in the city and would disagree more cops are needed. This does come from the same police department that recently said crime is not a problem in Bangor.
Well seeing how there are multiple articles and statements that they are short handed I’m sure you wouldn’t get that response. Secondly as a chief he probably doesn’t have time to respond to every whiney email he gets.
You are right and considering my email would not be in the “whiney” form I would stand a better chance at getting a response then those who submit “whiney” emails Gaista has responded to my emails before
Not a bad idea but all these businesses are accessed from a common area which is secured within the exterior doors of the building. They would need a key to get in or find an open door.
They’re probably too busy dealing with all of the drunks at Barnaby’s and Pete & Larry’s to patrol downtown. I always see three or four cops at the Barn Yard on Friday and Saturday.
You know the judge will just slap the burglars on the wrist.
You are assuming there will be an investigation and somebody will be caught!
First the accused must be caught, secondly charges have to be pressed and well, we know what kind of track record that has had lately in Bangor
You’d think they’d have a more recent photo of Coe building, considering Paul Cook’s baby, Antique Marketplace, has moved in on the right side of the photo, GM Pollock hasn’t been there for years.
Id place that photo as being from the 1990s. based on the cars in the photo and the fact that GM Pollack’s sign has the older design and the lack of the antiques marketplace which opened sometime in the early 2000s
BDN photo archive needs updating. Perhaps they could just use the photo of micreants in West Market Sq. that the BDN loves so dear for every article about Bangor.
or (I know this idea is far fetched) they could actually go to the building (assuming they are not far lol) and take a recent photo
The BDN office is about a mile from this building
Yeah I put a ton of sarcasm in my last comment, I mean it is pretty sad with any current news in the same state or city we go to the AP and publish it or in this case pull up an old photo. It would take a few minutes to get a photo of the building, maybe some of the damage done, people interviewed etc.
Seems journalism has become the cushiest of jobs… spend five minutes behind a computer, ignore the 5 W’s that we all learned in first grade, pull an old photo out of a computer file and your work is done.
if cops see anyone under 50 out after dark they should be arrested on suspiscion
right out of the AARP playbook…
As a CPA I suspect identity fraud to follow in later months.
It’s concerning because from what I read in the BDN not only equipment and cash
were stolen but possibly data? In my profession I read many articles about
thieves using stolen social security numbers to obtain refunds from the
government. Is AWARE planning to inform a breach of security of personal
information of its customers if such occurred? In my opinion people who were
impacted by all recent crimes in Bangor should have a credit check throughout
the year. Unfortunately such theft can have implications that will further more
damage. When service businesses, not just retail, are attacked, then the damage
could actually be worse. The sense of violation is just horrible. Bangor used
to be a quaint town. We must all be more watchful of what’s around us, watch
each other’s businesses. And that includes Brewer too!
Who is this “mayor”. I thought we only had a city council chairman. I don’t remember voting for any mayor.
Listen, strange women lyin’ in ponds distributin’ swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
ROFLMYBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love it :)
Are you speaking about the Masons? Because I’m not sure what you said.
It’s called rule by consent. Without consent the PTW are doomed and they know it.
Maybe someday the city reporter and the editors will actually read the city charter, where they will discover that the position of “mayor” is nowhere to be found.
Welcome to urban America.
It sounds like the NYC I know.
Well, City Fathers, you wanted Bangor to be like the rest of the country.
Well done.
If I had business down there I would pick random nights and spend some time there with two friends, Mr. Smith and Mr, Wesson!
An alarm system is a good investment for business. Systems are cheap and can even be owner installed. Flashing lights, alarm bells and sirens going off will stop people from hanging around and cleaning you out. The police could drive past the building a hundred times and never know what was going on inside.
True but, then the courts would spank him or her on the hand and they would be free to start all over again.
Well I can tell you if Maine real estate owns the building there not going to put a penny in to it ..they will just say its a old building that’s how it is ..they take your rent money do nothing for the buildings and your dam lucky if you can get some one over to even look at it let alone fix the problem …duct tape maybe ..
So thats who is complaining about Pickering Square… Lets see where this goes now Knowing Paul Cook doesn’t like people hanging in the Park who isn’t in his class. Wonderful.. I thought you were moving home to Europe Paul
How about putting in some secrurity alarms and camaras. This is not the 1920’s anymore.
How about not breaking in and stealing stuff, I believe in the 1920’s just down the street we mowed people down with machine guns who had stole some stuff!
What business owner leaves cash over night in the office.?…Ever hear of night deposit?
Yes blame the guy making money. Obama trained you well son.
While i agree with you completely, i also agree with RevOleson, the business owner should be pro-active and make sure everything is secured.
Locks are not meant for honest people
Unbelievable you politicize this!?
Sigh.
Every business does if someone other then the owner opens in the morning.
Jut another example what the meth clinic’s and a Main street homeless shelter brings to town. I believe we need only one clinic and it and the homeless shelter needs to be located out of the downtown and mall area. The economic situation is not good and will be getting worse come fall and winter. The cut backs in medicaid and social services will force more folks into crime. We better be prepared and with these break in’s , one right after another, it certainly appears, we are not.
Someone is going to correct you and work on blaming the slots in there somehow…..
A simple game camera in the corner of a room would seem to do the trick. It worked out well for the Orono Boardwalk.
If they put it in the corporate welfare budget they would watching pickering square already
Federal “free” money for police officers seems to have run out.
Who’da thunk it?
LOL
You mean the “stimulus” money
Place the crack pipe on the ground and step back away from it
Sounds like an inside job to me….anyone talk to the maintenance guy?
Just like another playbook, first you put fear into the people then you take away their rights.. I guess the people hanging around the public pickering square must have done it. of my!!! let close the park!!
Bangor is turning into a slum! Blame Bangor’s City Council members for doing nothing to stop drug addicts (methodone clinics) and convicted sex offenders (Bangor is the sex offender capital of Maine) from moving to the state. Instant free food and housing AND “legal” drugs! What more could the criminals want?! The city council has basically rolled out the red carpet. Why? Because some local interests make money off these criminals. They get paid by the state and feds to give free food, housing and other services (DRUGS!) to these people. The more “customers” they have, the more money they get from the government. Of course, their directors get paid a nice salary with these funds, too. And, yes, city council members know exactly how this works.
There certainly is a lot of criminal activity going on in Bangor these days…including burglaries, dope addicts, murders, people found dead in their apartments and on the street, etc. And being from Aroostook I used to think Bangor was a nice, safe place to travel to. I wonder if the Casino there has anything to do with the crime rate exploding? Another Atlantic City perhaps?
Carry and patrol
Here is a suggestion Chief Gastia…it may not prevent all crime but your officers need to be on “Foot Patrol” downtown and out of their vehicle like it used to be. Too many Police Officers refuse to leave the confines of their comfy cruiser than walk a beat. You can spot more crime that way than rolling downtown in a marked cruiser with headlights. Just a suggestion
There is a foot patrol now..
I’mvery curious why none of the businessess affected are mentioned to have security features in place?
Weston is not the mayor. Please see the city charter. No such position exists.
Nothing to see here folks -move along. Downtown Bangor sort of like our own little piece of Portland right here!! Great!
Multiple articles and statements say they are shorthanded, the study paid for by city of Bangor taxpayer and commisioned by the city council said they were not short handed and just needed to make some changes in scheduling practices, unfortunately these changes come up against union contracts.
