VINALHAVEN, Maine — Island residents will get another opportunity to decide on a trimmed school budget for 2012-2013.
The Vinalhaven School Board met Wednesday night and approved a budget of nearly $3.5 million for the upcoming school year. This is $45,000 less than the budget narrowly rejected at the polls on June 12.
Superintendent Lewis Collins said a district budget meeting has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, at the school auditorium. At that meeting, those who attend can adopt or amend the budget recommended by the board.
And then on Tuesday, Sept. 4, a referendum will be held on the island at which voters will either accept or reject the budget developed at the Aug. 6 meeting.
The original budget was rejected 158-156 on June 12.
The superintendent said the board cut the athletic budget for the district by 10 percent and reduced some supplies to trim the $45,000.
He noted that the proposed budget results in no property tax increase and has no layoffs.
