PARIS, Maine — A Bryant Pond man convicted last week of raping a woman has been sentenced to six years in prison.
Spencer T. Glover, 30, w as found guilty of gross sexual assault, Class B, on July 17. He was sentenced to 10 years, with all but six years suspended, plus three years of probation. His probation will bar him from contact with the victim, and from drugs and alcohol. He must attend sex offender counseling, and will be registered as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
In January 2011, he took advantage of a woman who had been drinking with other friends at his former home in Bethel, according to testimony. Rather than letting her drive home drunk, he and a friend took her to an upstairs bedroom.
Later, Glover entered the room and had sex with the woman while she was sleeping. She testified that she woke up to the assault.
At his sentencing on Friday in Oxford County Superior Court, the woman’s mother read a statement, asking for the maximum sentence of 10 years. “Evil has touched our lives,” she told the court.
She recalled the emotional moment when her daughter told her she’d been raped. “I wanted to scoop her up in my arms like when she was a toddler and take away her pain,” she said, crying.
Glover told friends he’d been falsely accused, and some sided with him, she said. “She should not have had to feel stigmatized or embarrassed one bit. She did nothing wrong.”
The woman Glover assaulted also spoke. She said she’d hoped Glover would take a plea deal rather than make her testify about the incident in court. Instead, she said, “he made me sit through a trial with a judge and a jury and my family and made me recount what happened.”
Glover’s mother apologized to the victim and her family and recounted incidents of Glover growing up. She said her son had grown more wild over the years. “You were a really nice person when you were clean and sober,” she told him.
Glover said he was a different person 18 months ago when he committed the crime. He said he had been drinking too much and was “severely addicted to marijuana.”
“I no longer drink. I’m no longer addicted to marijuana,” Glover said.
His attorney, Ron Hoffman, asked for a shorter sentence, and noted that Glover had been with the same employer for nine years before his arrest for sexual assault last year. He called Glover “an excellent candidate for probation.”
Assistant District Attorney Joseph O’Connor urged Justice Robert Clifford to impose “a sentence that makes it clear the wrongfulness of his conduct and the innocence of his victim.” O’Connor said Glover’s behavior in a conversation recorded after the assault and at the trial showed he had “no remorse.”
Clifford noted that during the trial, Glover changed his story from denying any sexual contact with the victim to accusing her of initiating sex with him, which Clifford called “a huge aggravating factor” affecting the length of his sentence.
Glover asked for a stay of execution to get his affairs in order. It was denied. He is set to be released in 2018.

He should have to spend the entire 10 years in prison with no time off. I would call him a pig but then I would have to go find a pig and apologize.
oh just go ahead and call it as it is. he is a pig. anyone that does this is a pig.
Hope Hoffman does better at his own trial. Glover remember what goes around comes around.
”
Glover told friends he’d been falsely accused.” These people all say the same thing and never take any ounce of responsibility.
I am not saying he did not do this, but i have a friend who i graduated with that had a great paying job, two kids, lovely wife, lost everything because he was accused of rape, did ten years. The dates that he was accused of he was in Boston with me on business trip. So i would rethink your comment. I testified for him and took records and credit card receipts but no the jury decided to make him guilty. The woman that did this to him is living in hell right now for her actions. I just saw her a few days ago and she keeps telling me how sorry she is. Bull crap.
Sounds like your friend had a lousy lawyer. It’s not too late. If she falsely accused him, she can recant her story. If I were you, I would try and record a conversation with her where she admits he was innocent, then take it to the DA.
Is there any article on the BDN that you can’t relate to? Your comments are very similar on so many articles, sometimes I get confused about what I’m reading.
I am tired of hearing this same old story. Women who drink too much and then become victims of crimes when they pass out. Whatever happened to the buddy system where you and a friend watch out for each other? Whatever happened to the designated driver to see that you got home safely? Be smart. Have a plan. Don’t leave yourself alone and defenseless!
Whatever happened to don’t drink or do drugs or hang out with those who do . . . and chances are you won’t find yourself in such a predicament.
Wow, you must be something pretty special. Never in your life did you have a little too much to drink and have to rest somewhere i guess? I dont understand what your comment means, No means NO. There shouldnt have been an issue. Drinking and drugs actually didnt have anything to do with this. Being disgusting, a sexual deviant, and scum of the earth DID!!!!
As a teen and young adult, I partied a lot! I am not special. I have found myself in predicaments where I had too much to drink. But my best friend and I watched out for each other. That’s all I’m saying. Party smart!
My comment means . . . alcohol and drugs are most likely two of the main contributors for ruining peoples lives.
Well that i can truly agree with. Sorry if i misconstrued what you meant.
I wouldn’t go that far! Partying is fun! I was young once and I partied a lot. But I never let myself get so drunk that I became comatose. Safe partying takes planning.
gotta remember too people like to slip things into the drinks so one gets comatose with no fault of their own.
This was supposed to be a FRIEND. Whatever happened to having respect for women and not taking advantage of them when they were incoherant? What about being a friend and not forcing yourself on someone because you cant get it the NORMAL way…He should have gotten the full 10 years, and his lawyer should sit beside him and hold his hand. Excellent person for Probation my hiney. Since when did we allow someone probation for totally changing a woman’s life forever?
I am not making excuses for him. I don’t know him and don’t want to know him. I’m just saying: Party Smart! Take responsibility for your own safety! Don’t be an easy mark for a predator!
rockycin – I believe I understand what you are trying to say but at the same time I’d have to ask whatever happened to not raping a woman? That’s the real question. Could she have made a better decision, perhaps, but that in no way justifies the crime. Hopefully others are able to prevent similar circumstances from occurring.
Very true. Don’t rape a woman. If you do, be prepared to go to prison. But, at the same time, women need to empower themselves with good, sound decisions. Don’t be easy prey.
So, you’re saying the woman is to blame?
I’m saying that if you run across a busy street don’t be surprised when you get hit by a car.
The difference is running across a busy street is no time for cars to stop for you, they don’t have a choice. This guy had plenty of time to consider his actions beforehand and chose to act on them. Glover is the ONLY person to blame.
Passing out or falling asleep, regardless of where a person is, is not an open invitation for sex.
Blaming the victim is not okay. Regardless of her state of functioning, he took advantage of a friend in a vulnerable position. Then he was not man enough to take responsibility for his actions and put her through the pain of a trial, on the chance he would get away with raping this woman. He is a poor excuse for a human being. He may have stopped drinking and using drugs, but he is not in recovery. If he was, he would have taken responsibility for his actions and tried to make amends.
We talked to the da, me and my wife and he said once accused its over with. The da did not like him either way. Not sure why. He also siad its illegal to record a conversation without her permission. I do know he might get a new trial soon. Not sure, and for a lawyer he had a great lawyer just did not seem to care that day
That’s so not true! People’s sentences are being expunged all the time due to new DNA evidence. If you are convicted and later proven innocent, you are released from prison!
Did i say he would not be released, if i did please say where. He is getting a new trial per the letter that went to the judge and dna helped. He will be released, we have all kinds of evidence, letters that she wrote to her friend s andmuch more
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I don’t mean to argue. You wrote “We talked to the da, me and my wife and he said once accused its over with”. I took that to mean the DA told you that once it’s over, it’s over. Good luck with the trial.
Yea i worded it wrong. He has a new trial in Portland next month. He will be released. The lawyer already siad he would
“The lawyer already said he would (be released).” That’s too funny to argue with.
So your another one of those commenters with smart remarks. He was falsely accused. We have plenty of evidence and the da has been forwarded copies of it and has stated he will be granted a new trial in a different place and will probably be released. Keep your smart mouth comments to yourself please
There was nothing smart mouthed about my observation.
In the post I commented on, smart guy, you said “the lawyer said he would be released.” Now you clarify by saying “the da says he will PROBABLY be released.” Which is it? The word of a lawyer to a client is far less credible in my opinion, than the word of the da. Either way though, this is all hearsay and I am skeptical.
Also, the fact that he was convicted means he wasn’t “falsely accused”. It means he is guilty. If he gets a new trial and is found not guilty, I’ll be happy for him. Until then, he is guilty.
Yes, it is illegal to record a conversation without permission, but if a friend of mine were in prison unjustly, I’d do it anyway. Then I’d play it for her and shame her into going forward. I doubt she would want a tape of herself admitting her false accusation getting out and embarrassing her.
I was told once that Maine law is that as long as one party knows that the conversation is being recorded than it is legal. This doesn’t have to be the one being recorded it could be the one doing the recording that knows. May son was taken advantage of by a man when he attended a daycare when he was little — he was caught with his own words — through a recording. Video taping is different unless it is done in a public place. Perhaps things have change in the last five years.
Both parties need to be aware the conversation is being recorded. I recorded my ex wife and my lawyer played the tape in divorce court. myx is a know it all so when my lawyer asked her during cross examinantion if she knew she was being recorded she answered “yes”. Judge allowed it to be played.
Do you live in Maine, I ask this because under federal audio taping law only one party needs to be aware of the taping — there are 12 states however that require all parties to be aware, Maine is not one of them…Mass, Maryland and New Hampshire are states that require all parties to be aware.
LOL @ “its the pots fault”
I think the booze brought the hidden creep out in him. Pot is more likely the reason it took him longer to get off the couch.
Falling asleep or passing out in the presence of a friend is not an invitation to have sex. This young man learned a hard lesson. I feel sorry the young woman had to go through this ordeal. Let’s hope others understand this is a new world, not the free-wheeling-anything-goes of 40 years ago.
“severely addicted to marijuana.” What a bunch of crock, I am so sick of criminals blaming marijuana on their actions,,
That was the funniest thing I read all night long. I know someone who smokes marijuana and the only crime he has commited was eating all my damn cheez-its! hahahah
That is probably why he got the lengthy sentence. The judge knew he was using every lie he could think of. Usually in these he said/ she said drinking cases there is no verdict.
He said he had been drinking too much and was “severely addicted to marijuana.”
Can’t. Stop. Laughing. What a loser!!
“severely addicted to marijuana.”?
probably more like “severely addicted to being a perv. who can’t get actual sentient beings to do the deed with me”
This is a cascade of bad choices. Mr Glover deserves the six years. His behavior was criminal. The young lady learned a terrible life lesson about drinking, using pot to excess.
Marijuana is additive. When I was a wee lad we smoked pot everyday along with drinking. I haven’t done either in over 30 years, but some of my old friends never stopped. they smoke pot before getting out of bed in the morning to before the go to sleep at night . so yes it is additive and anyone who says it is is lying to you.
“it is additive and anyone who says it is is lying to you.”Don’t lie to me!
” they smoke pot before getting out of bed in the morning to before the go to sleep at night”
This is called a habit. Marijuana is habit forming and one can become a habitual user. Addiction is a very different story and one that Marijuana does not play a role in.
This creep is pushing the blame of his actions upon alcohol and pot rather than taking responsibility for himself.
B/s,B/s B/s severely addicted to pot . Make me puck.
Give Him life for lieing.
What kind of sick bastard finds having sex with someone who is asleep enjoyable? Poor girl to have to go through and even if it was difficult for her to sit through the whole trial hopefully this bastard will think twice of what he is done.
Gotta remember that this pig needs to point his finger and blame somebody or something and his case he was blaming the pot.
The pot made me do it excuse is not excuse.
