Weeding through the BDN last Friday, I briefly thought Matthew Gagnon got something right when he wrote, “Context matters.” Unfortunately, his column tumbled downhill from there, but it’s that initial thought that proves so galling in this year’s political lie-fest. Primarily it’s the way Republican apparatchiks take video clips from President Obama’s speeches, twist them til they scream from distortion and then spend millions of the Koch brothers’ billions and Karl Rove’s Super PAC funds to hone the edits into an attack point for prime-time TV advertising.

The first (and some would say most blatant) example to hit the air was a corruption of an Obama speech given on October 18, 2008. Obama’s words were, “Senator McCain’s campaign actually said, and I quote, ‘If we keep talking about the economy, we’ll lose.’”

Gov. Romney’s folks reduced this to an ad with Obama saying, “If we talk about the economy, we’ll lose.” McCain’s campaign had said it, Obama quoted them in 2008, but the spin of Republican editing pretended Obama was saying it years later about himself.

Edit the truth hard enough, and you can create some astounding lies. A more recent example was derived from a July 13, 2012, Obama campaign rally in Roanoke, Va. Obama said: “If you were successful, someone along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Someone helped to create this unbelievable American system that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges — if you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

Obama was saying our success depends in part on the supporting hard work of others. But the well-funded, widely distributed Republican TV ad reduced Obama’s words to: “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that — somebody else made that happen.” And with that, the spinmeisters (like Mr. Gagnon) ran with the ad’s edit distortions, attempting to create an image of President Obama as some kind of anti-business monster. They portray him as putting down entrepreneurs and small-business owners, when all Obama was saying is, we are all in this together, we rely on the social structure and infrastructure to help our businesses succeed. Romney himself has said the same thing.

Or take this distortion of an Obama speech delivered in Oakland, Cal., on July 23. Obama said: “I’m going to ask anybody making over $250,000 a year to go back to the tax rates they were paying under Bill Clinton, back when our economy created 23 million new jobs — the biggest budget surplus in history and everybody did well. Just like we tried their plan [i.e., under Bush], we tried our plan [i.e., under Clinton] and it worked. That’s the difference. That’s the choice in this election.”

Republican edits cut Obama’s context to: “Just like we tried their plan, we tried our plan — and it worked.” The ad then slams Obama for saying today’s economy is doing just fine. In fact, he was referring to the economy of the Clinton years.

As a former newspaper editor I am disgusted and horrified by what Big Money is doing, in this campaign, to our American democracy. Disgusted by the advertising lies, and horrified by the political machinations happening off the airwaves as well. By lying about the dangers of voter fraud, they have engineered millions of poor and minority people off the voter rolls in states under Republican control. In Congress, Republican manipulations have frustrated Obama jobs bill proposals that would have put people back to work. Romney’s people, representing Big Money interests, are far more focused on lying to destroy the president than on cooperating to get America back to work.

  1. Since comments to Gagnon’s column are now restricted to FaceBook rather than through Discus, I’ve stopped reading it (I don’t have nor will not have a Facebook account).  Frustrating that for those of us unfairly disenfranchised not to be able to comment.  Thanks to Rev. Witting for calling out Gagnon in a more public forum.

    1. Yes. I do NOT like the Facebook requirement that the BDN blogs have.

      Great piece, too!

  2. Thank Lee Witting but I heard the Presidents entire speech from July 13 not just the Republican ad and I was deeply insulted.  I worked my butt off to build my business and got nothing but grief from local and state government, and they are still in my face.  Would have been much simpler to sell my property for house lots.  As for teachers who inspired me, they were doing the job they were paid for with my parent’s tax dollars.

    1. That’s what he said though. There is hard work put into it, obviously, but it still remains that you couldn’t have done it alone. Is infrastructure not necessary to your business? Educated employees? Laws — both the creation and enforcement of? He never said you didn’t work hard.

I mean, you just can’t deny that government is necessary to maintain a system in order to facilitiate capitalism. You can’t get around it.

      1. “if you’ve got a business  you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”
I most certainly did build it.  And built six full time jobs with full benefits that support families,  and 36 part time seasonal jobs for college kids and seniors , and $300,000 in Taxes payments added to the town that weren’t there before. And there are so many days when I wish I hadn’t gone down that path.

        1. Did you read this article? Did you hear all of Obama’s remarks? Did you even read my comment?

No one said you didn’t work hard. It’s that you couldn’t do all these things alone and there is nothing wrong with saying that. If you want to try? Have at it. It’d be interesting to see how far you get without infrastructure, the rule of law and an educated work force.

        2. You’re responding to the Republican propaganda that distorted what President Obama said! Please re-read the article.

        3. It must be hard to go through life with such blinders on. Obama never said you did not build the business. THAT was referencing the roads, internet, electricity grid and other infrastructure that allows you to do business.

        4. You did build it, with the help of everyone else. Build a store all by yourself, hammer every nail, pour every ounce of concrete, and hump every brick of shingles up to the roof. Personally interview every prospective employee. Now hang out your “Open” sign. While you sit there all proud of yourself for building your own business you look around and see your shelves are empty and there are no customers. Why is that? Because you wanted to do it all by yourself, there are no roads leading to your new business for the trucks to deliver your freight, or the customers to travel to your store. You need the roads, which you didn’t do yourself, point proven. Now in order to have customers, you need people who have money for your product or service. Where do they come from? From other businesses and corporations who employ people so they have money to spend. Here again your business can not survive without others. You can physically build the building of your business, but you cannot “build a business” without others. Your business depends on others everyday, the people driving the trucks to deliver the goods, the people working for you that make your business run, and the multitude of other people required to make your business work. That is what the President was clearly saying.

        5. So you take the sentence out of context, and make it mean something other than what Obama actually said.  Read the article again, please.

      2.  You obviously have never built a business! In fact, I seriously doubt you ever built anything more complicated than a bird house!

        1. I’ve never seen a business built without the use of education, infrastructure and the rule of law.

      1. No, that is not what Obama said, it is what the Republican hit squads said Obama said.  Two  very  different things.

    2. Oh, so you’re one of those who lounged in  the classroom, miffed because you had to go to school, and said, “OK, educate me”, an all to common attitude among students.  No acceptance of responsibility then, nor now.

  3. Gagnon’s writing and positions aren’t consistent week to week. That’s not the point of his columns — it’s not about principles. It’s about getting a hit in on the opponent. He’s a political strategist, remember? So yes, he lies and distorts and criticizes others for positions they don’t even hold. That’s the premise of the Romney campaign and that’s going to be the premise of Gagnon’s coming pieces.

      1. Gagnon forgot to include this info:  . 1. For 30 years politicians
have talked about health care. Obama is the first to do something about it. The
Affordable Care Act removes restrictions on pre-existing conditions, makes
health care more affordable for small businesses, raises the age at which children
can be on their parents’ policies, removes lifetime caps, and more. With the
possible exception of insurance execs, who would not want these changes? 2.
Obama has ended the Iraq war and is drawing the war in Afghanistan to a close
like he said he would. 3. Obama thinks women should have access to free
preventative health care. Why is this still an issue 4. Obama believes in
equality for all people and signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to help
women get equal pay for equal work. 5. Obama repealed the ridiculous Don’t Ask,
Don’t Tell in military policy. 6. Obama is investing in and promoting clean
energy jobs. 7. Obama supports education by giving more flexibility to the No
Child Left Behind legislation and by making college more affordable, 8. Obama
believes millionaires and billionaires should pay their fair share of taxes at
the rates the rest of us have to pay. Isn’t this a no brainer? 9. Despite
inheriting one of the worst economic messes since the Great Depression, Obama
has added 2.6 million private sector jobs to our economy. 10. Even with all the
anti this and anti that of the Republicans whose goal for 4 years has been to
make Obama a one term president, the stock market is at a 5 year high. I gladly
voted for Obama in 2008 and most certainly will in 2012.

  4. “Edit the truth hard enough, and you can create some astounding lies.”

    Yup, Witting sure did!

  5. Yep…people are successful because our benevolent govt made them
that way. Of course that is the theory of Dizzy Lizzy Warren and our
community organizer. A lot of us did okay because of the roads..what
a sorry reason. Teachers made us what we are today…. what if one
went to a private school? I just don’t know where all these succesful
businesses came from without the govt pushing them all to success.
And yes…I did listen to Obama AND Dizzy Lizzy and yes, I KNOW what
I heard them say. You can try to change the meaning and the words anyway
you want, the bottom line is the govt didn’t make people successful. The only
thing the govt is required to do is to allow us the freedom to become
successful…not to convince the sheep without them we would all be on
food stamps…which seems to be this admin’s main goal.

    1. Mitt Romney stated on the SEC forms that he was CEO of Bain Capital until 2002 but then tells the public he “retroactively” retired in 1999.

So he is either a liar to the American People or lied to the SEC, which would be a felony.  Which is it?

        1. The SEC filings are public documents and they show that Romney was the CEO of Bain from 1999 to 2002.  Most likely Mitt’s tax returns say the same thing.

          How does one “retroactively” retire?

Also, how does a person get a 401k to reach $110 Million in just 15 years?

        2. Either Romney was the head of Bain Capital — the only stockholder, the chairman and the president of the company, as he told the SEC — or he wasn’t.
He says he wasn’t responsible for anything the company did when he was in charge.  Is he lying to us, or did he lie to the SEC?  it’s one or the other.

  6. The campaign speech on July 13 was an awakening for many of us.  It showed clearly what Barrack Obama is and what he stands for.  There is no need for republicans to spin any part of that disgusting and pathetic speech.  It stands on its own and Obama meant every word of it.

    1. Read the article and read Obama’s entire statements.

You’re going to try and pretend anyone could have a business without a government facilitating a capitalist system? Without infrastructure and the rule of law? Be honest here.

      1. I totally agree that business is dependent on government services which they pay for.  So government is doing its job and Obama wants all of the credit for any business success which is ludicrous.  The statement that the president made was ridiculous and to defend it is ridiculous.  And I did read the article, did you?

        1. Whatever. You hate the guy and you’ll twist and distort his words so you can have affirmation and justification for hating him. That’s fine. But he wasn’t trying to take all the credit. You admit yourself that government is a necessary facilitator. We all benefit from that system, so we pay into the system. Obama’s point is that we do have to pay for it and at some point this demonization of government goes too far. What’s ludicrous is trying to claim you did everything on your own and never had any help. The government needs to be funded so we all have an opportunity to fail or succeed on our merits. There’s nothing ridiculous about that.

  7. Another pundit remarked about this speech, so that is the problem, the President is waiting for his “helper” to come along and fix the economy.

  8. Rev Witting – Your living with one eye slammed shut. Open up and take a look at what the Obama campaign and backers are twisting and spinning in order to beat Romney. You should be equally appalled. Of course, since you can’t see both sides, I’m sure you’ll keep beating the drum for Obama, forgetting, conveniently, that it is a political season, and, conveniently ignoring the fact that most people with a brain know that modern day politics has become a dirty game. Voter beware.

I hope you don’t preach in your church with the obvious bias with which you view politics.

    1.  Wait, so it is OK to pass the “Hate Plate” in Church to fund the Anti-SSM crowd, but not ok for Witting to point out lies? Just so I have this right, in the church, hate is ok, and lies are not a sin?

      1. How in the world did you get that out of what I wrote? Read it again, and try comprehending for a change. I do believe I laid blame on both parties.

        1.  I hope you don’t preach in your church with the obvious bias with which you view politics.

Yea, its pretty clear, bias is ok as long as it is in rhythm with the church’s bias. The “Hate Plate” was a bias in the church against SSM. Religion in and of itself keeps one eye slammed shut. Pot, you just called the kettle black. All Witting did was point out how President Obama was misquoted, in other word’s he told the truth. You called it bias, therefore indicating that misquoting was not a lie and ok.

  9. Andrea Mitchell’s (MSNBC) Wawa edit:

Andrea Mitchell and her staff at MSNBC edited out Romney’s private vs. public sector comparison and focused only on the moments were he talked abou Wawa computers.  When they were done “touching up” Romney’s speech, it was less about efficiency and more about “Gee whiz!  Look at that!  A computer screen!”

The full context would have shown that Romney was comparing how private enterprise performs more efficiently than the public sector, by using state of the art technology.

I like being able to fire people:

The DNC and the media went red in the face over these seven words.

“See?  He is a corporate raider!  He likes firing people!”

Of course, contrary to the media narrative, there was much more substance to what Romney actually said:

“I want individuals to have their own insurance.  That means the insurance company will have an incentive to keep you healthy.  It also means that if you don’t like what they do, you could fire them,” Romney said.

“I like being able to fire people who provide services to me.  You know, if someone isn’t giving the good service, I want to say, ‘I’m going to go get someone else to provide this service to me,” he added.

Romney “agrees” that we depend on government:

After the Romney campaign jumped all over the “You didn’t build that” speech, Team Obama tried to fight back with an ad accusing Romney of twisting the President’s words.  The video even argues that Romney agrees with President Obama’s claim that individual success is totally dependent on government.

    Here’s what Romney actually said:

“And of course, he (Obama) describes people who we care very deeply about, who make a difference in our lives:  our schoolteachers, firefighters, people who build roads.  We need those things.  We value schoolteachers, firefighters, people who build roads.  You really couldn’t have a business if you didn’t have those things.

But, you know, we pay for those things.  Alright?  The taxpayers pay for government.  It’s not like government just provides those to all of us and we say, ‘Oh, thank you government for doing those things.’  No, in fact, we pay for them and we benefit from them and we appreciate the work that they do and the sacrifices that are done by people who work in government.  But they did not build this business.

    1. Personally when I read/heard the “he likes firing people” comment I assumed that it was taken out of context and that there was more to the comment than what the spinners conveyed.  Can you say the same?

      1. Yes.  But when we listen to the whole of Obama’s speeches we find that it only gets worse.   When he isn’t using a teleprompter we see how he really thinks and feels.

  10. I’ve been enjoying your columns or some considerable time.  This one, quite different than your others, is a piece that should not have been confined to the editorial pages.

TV will not turn down ads worth  millions of dollars.  Consequently, millions of people are being  hoodwinked by the dollar-fat Teapublican propaganda machine.  It is a  billion dollar Obama bashing by the Teapublican Party.

Unfortunately, millions are unaware of the sleazy snip editing process.  How can the average TV viewer sift the lies and distortions.   The Teapublican’s campaign is financed with billions of dollars and based on total lies.
