Republicans have escalated their attacks on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., over his claim that presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney did not pay taxes for years, with the Republican party head calling Reid a “dirty liar.”
Republican National Committee chair Reince Priebus, speaking on ABC’s “This Week,” on Sunday contrasted Reid’s allegations relating to Romney’s wealth with Reid’s own lifestyle as a resident of the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Washington, where he lives.
“As far as Harry Reid is concerned, listen … I’m not going to respond to a dirty liar who hasn’t filed a single page of tax returns himself. Complains about people with money but lives in the Ritz-Carlton here down the street,” Priebus said. “… This is just a made-up issue. And the fact that we’re going to spend any time talking about it is ridiculous.”
Reid created a political dustup last week by suggesting that Romney is withholding his tax returns because he didn’t pay taxes over a 10-year stretch, part of Democratic efforts to focus on Romney’s wealth and pressure him to release more than two years of returns. Romney forcefully rejected the allegations on Friday, saying he paid “a lot of taxes” every year and that Reid should “put up or shut up.”
Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson struck back at Priebus on Sunday, calling Romney “the most secretive candidate since Richard Nixon.”
“Republicans can try to cover up for Mitt Romney’s stonewalling all they want, but this issue is not going away until Romney decides to be straight with the American people and release his tax returns,” Jentleson said.
Jentleson also doubled down on Reid’s original allegation, in which the senator told the Huffington Post that he had learned of Romney’s tax history from “a person who had invested with Bain Capital,” Romney’s former firm. Reid, who has a history of making incendiary statements about Republicans, declined to identify the investor or cite proof for his allegation.
In his statement Sunday, Jentleson reiterated: “As Sen. Reid has said, an extremely credible source informed him that Mitt Romney did not pay taxes for 10 years …It’s clear Mitt Romney is hiding something.”
Democratic National Committee chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, also appearing on “This Week,” echoed that theme Sunday, declining to criticize Reid and saying that Romney is at fault for the confusion over his wealth.
“I do know that Mitt Romney could clear this up in 10 seconds by releasing the 23 years of tax returns that he gave to John McCain when he was being vetted for vice president,” Wasserman Schultz said. “Or even 12 years of tax returns that his own father said were what was appropriate.”
On “Fox News Sunday,” U.S. Senate candidate Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said his big primary victory last week over a better-known establishment candidate reflected “a tidal wave that’s sweeping the whole country, which is that voters are tired of career politicians in both parties.”
Cruz, who won with strong support from the tea party movement, predicted that Romney — who has periodic trouble winning over conservatives — will gain overwhelming support in the November election from tea party and other conservative activists. “I have spoken to literally thousands and thousands of tea party activists,” Cruz said. “I have yet to meet a single tea party leader that is not going to vote for Mitt Romney and work for him because our country is in crisis. And we’ve got to stop this Obama agenda if we’re going to preserve opportunity for our kids and grandkids.”

Mitt, prove it!
Almost every word, every day, that comes out of Romney’s mouth, is a blatant LIE. Where are your 12 years of Taxes Romney? Ironic how you have 100,000,000 dollars in your IRA which is totally Illegal and needs an IRS investigation and audit.
$100 million you mean. In his IRA!
Here’s how it’s done.
http://mobile.bloomberg.com/news/2012-07-15/the-secret-behind-romney-s-magical-ira.html
Sorry I forgot 3 extra Zeros the amount is so staggering for this Romney Crook. Where is the IRS audit?
It’s probably legal if you’re part of the very very very very few who have the ability to arrange things like he did. IRA’s were created to help working people save money after private sector pensions went into decline. Mitt Romney and his friends have taken advantage of the law to do this self enrichment contrary to the purpose of these laws. Disgusting, Un-American, and unsupportable, by the reasonable right or the reasonable left in this country.
Al Capone went to jail for keeping his money offshore to avoid paying taxes on it. Perhaps Mr. Priebus should reconsider who the real “dirty liar” is.
Maybe McCain will tell us why he chose a dimwit instead of Romney for his veep after vetting his returns.
And…….even if Harry Reid is a liar, which point I will not argue, Mr Priebus’s rhetoric needs to be toned down for the sake of civility.
Reid & all the loyal Barack Obama crew are in the Chicago gutter w/the president.
Can you say desperate deflection?
He’s not lying though. Reid was very honest stating that he doesn’t know for sure if the source is right or wrong. He reiterated what he was told. Considering that it is precedent for candidates to release their tax returns, there really isn’t an excuse for Romney to withhold it.
Ultimately though, this is just a case of what goes around, comes around. The right screeched about Obama’s birth certificate. They were relentless about it and it was completely baseless. They said all Obama has to do is release the document to prove them wrong. Well, now it’s your turn. How bitter does your medicine taste?
I would challenge anyone on this site to answer your second paragraph. Perfect.
If he didn’t know if it was right or wrong, then isn’t just hearsay gossip? Pretty slimy move to pull in an already vitriolic campaign.
But he prefaced it with that. Either way, the right is just as guilty of the same behavior. Didn’t see the people who are outraged now outraged when the same thing was happening against Obama. It’s a little too late to be screeching about victimization now.
A “he hit me first” defense doesn’t cut it. Its like 2 people talking over a fence and starting a vicious rumor just by prefacing it with “I heard it somewhere” . You know once it gets out there, everybody will believe it even if there were to be a retraction. Sooo low rent…..
Besides, I was replying to the first half of your comment only. The second half was a sandtrap awaiting me that I didn’t want to get caught in (especially with bradygirls2 waiting to pounce). I will say this about it: Without looking it up, I don’t remember of a high power Senator starting the Birther’s movement, just some operatives doing it. Also low rent, but it was more of a low caste of the machine that caused that debacle.
No, what doesn’t cut it is the convenient and sudden outrage. You don’t get to be a hypocrite and then try and put the blame on me. Sorry.
Your also now creating convenient and sudden goal posts. It doesn’t count because someone as high up as Reid didn’t do it? Please, get real. None of them spoke out about it, so that’s just as bad.
Get some principles of your own before you start screeching about right and wrong.
The LAST thing I did was show “sudden outrage” or put any blame on you. I was trying for a civil discourse with the usually level headed you. Don’t get so defensive when there was no offense (intended).
Please, get real. Now you’re trying to derail the conversation. Address the hypocrisy.
The facts are the facts. Republicans whether they were a part of the birth certificate witch hunt or not, they didn’t speak out against it.
So yes, it is this sudden outrage to be offended over what Reid is doing. It’s identical to the behavior Republicans engaged in. If they would have had some integrity then, maybe their outrage wouldn’t look so convenient now.
And at least Reid is asking for something relevant and precedented unlike the veiled racism behind the Republican’s request.
Whether the were involved or not, they didn’t speak out about it.
Who could here a damned thing over the din of Obama’s 2-3 (or more} year honeymoon with the country. Just because they weren’t heard complaining about it (the democrats sure did) doesn’t mean that they can’t complain now about a story thrown out there that can’t be proved. And by a major player at that.
I find it kinda funny u used the word ‘screeching’ in your answers to countyescapee Isn’t that what a certain group is accused of doing? :)
Please, get real. Now you’re talking even more defensively. See ya when you calm down and reread our thread with comprehension of just what I’ve said. g’nite
I notice you don’t have a real response, so you deflect.
Read with comprehension! No way do I deflect from my unemotional remarks while you are giving them an unfair spin. I asked you to read again in a new light tomorrow because this doesn’t sound like the usual you (your last was a good example).
Look, it’s hypocrisy, plain and simple. There is no need for you to defend it. When someone engages in poor behavior, call them our and denounce it. You’re a hypocrite if you only have a problem when one does it and not the other.
And, “Dirty Liar” Harry Reid did so from the floor of the United States Senate–a most egregious and outrageous thing to do. But, he will get away with it, just as he has in giving taxpayer money to a Chinese industry that is represented by his son!
Romney is squeaky clean, and the liberals know it and are deflecting any conversation away from the real issues at stake, which Obama’s record would not allow him to justify.
Obama has not released any more than his most recent tax return; Timothy Geithner owed over a quarter of a million dollars in taxes, supposedly paid up after being nominated as Treasury Secretary; Debbie Wasserman(blabbermouth) Schultz will not release hers and it has been proven that she had Swiss bank accounts, etc. — so the list goes on.
Mitt Romney may be clean, but even then what would his tax returns show? That the super-rich have ways of avoiding taxes that the middle class does not? That he has made more money during the Obama presidency than he did before? That would make his pronouncements about the woeful economy under President Obama look a little weak. And how did he get around tax laws in making his sons millionaires? I think there is something more amiss, tax avoidance maneuvers that take the squeaky out of squeaky clean.
Mitt believes that taxes are for little people to pay and for his people to avoid.
Dirty Harry, prove it. Tell us how you made your money, Harry??
That’s up to his constituents to ask though. Reid is not the one running for President, he’s not asking for our vote.
Dirty Harry is right !
Clear everything up today Romney, release your 12 years of taxes as your own father did.
What are you hiding Romney? What laws have you broken? How many tax audits did you get out of? Romney you are nothing more then a Wall St Crook and Thief. Bain Capital keeps shipping American jobs to China as I write this blog and Romney collects profits from the loss of American jobs.
Time to vote all Tea Republicans out of office and rebuild the Great United States without the Tea Republican Traitors.
Why did you throw the tea party republicans into this?? Neither Reid or Romney is a tea party member. And, there are plenty of democrats in the tea party also. Oh…another thing, is Romney really a crook and a thief or is Knightcross a liar???
Nice language, Priebus. Very statesmanlike.
Must go with the territory. Like Charlie Webster here in Maine.
Liar? Easy to disprove, so do it, Mitt.
YUP do it Mitt, release 12 years of your taxes. Prove Harry wrong, now, today.
He’s getting so much negativity for this secrecy, but what’s crazy is that the campaign things this the better option over releasing the tax returns.
This is not about Harry Reid
What high level management position today could you apply for that your perspective employer would not want to look into your past? Romney is applying for the highest management position in the country and refuses to allow his employer … We the People to look into his past, what employer in their “right” mind would hire this guy?
Aww, Harry must have taken one punch too many
during his boxing career. I guess if Mitt didn’t pay
taxes for 10 years then we should disband the IRS
for not doing their job. And this piece of info comes
from an investor? Like the average investor would
know about Romney’s tax filings. Yeah…right! Maybe
they are talking about the no paying of taxes of his governor
salary and olympic salary of….$1 he took for pay. Mitt should
ask harry to show where he got his many millions from just
being a senator. Maybe he should tell the community organizer
that when he releases all his college transcripts and how he was
funded for college, his grades etc…then he will MAYBE show more
than he already is required to show…of which Romney has done.
This is just a David Axelrod tactic, throw out anything and claim
it becomes the other person who has to prove the accusations are
false. You don’t have to have any validity to the charges and have to
prove them…that is the problem of the person smeared. Nice tactic
and the sign of scumbags who can’t run on a record. And the sheep
bleat and foam at the mouth that this rich guy has money and he should
be ashamed of that. Go get a job sheep. Oops…you can’t? Don’t worry,
your community organizer is promoting food stamps to take good care of
you.
