WATERVILLE, Maine — A pair of teenagers are facing arson charges stemming from a case in which they stole a lawn mower and set it on fire, according to police.

Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey said the case involved two boys, ages 14 and 13, who stole a lawn mower from a Silver Street residence on July 27.

After stealing the mower, the boys pushed it into nearby woods and set it on fire, destroying the machine, according to Rumsey.

Following an investigation, both boys were summoned Monday and charged with arson and theft, Rumsey said.

The state fire marshal’s office and the Waterville Fire Department assisted in the investigation.

  1. Someone connected with the Waterville school system should take a hard look at those boys before they head back to classes three weeks from now. Fireworks are legal in nearby towns and readily available . Some serious intervention now might save some real trouble down the road.

    1. We might have executed a few frogs being “boys.” Burning up a lawn mower aint normal friend. If these two lived next door would you sleep with one eye open?

      1. Key feature being that it was someone else’s lawnmower….not normal at all…..

Probably the lawn mower’s owner had the gall to try and correct the little brats at some point in the recent past…..

  2. really? arson for setting a lawn mower on fire? If I took a cucumber out of someones garden and set it on fire would that constitute as arson? What those boys did was wrong, I personally wouldn’t press charges. I’d have them replace my lawn mower and make sure their “parents dusted their pants off. “

    1. 30 years ago I might agree a bit. Setting a cucumber on fire would freak me out more than the lawnmower blaze. All of us raised a little hell as young boys. However-in this day and age I’d be real concerned for the safety of my family if these boys lived in the neighborhood.Perhaps they were run off by the home owners for some reason and were seeking revenge-who knows. I’m sure the Waterville police will determine the motive for this crime. I’d rather they had a bad reason than no reason at all.
