CARMEL – John Fred “Jack” Currie, 79, died peacefully Aug. 3, 2012, at home with loved ones by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. Jack was born July 28, 1933, in Bartlett, N.H., son of Donald W. and Aleda R. Currie of Windham.
He grew up in Gorham, moved to Portland in 1949 and attended Deering High School. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1952 and served aboard the USS Currituck. In civilian life, he was a tireless worker and knew how to do most everything. Jack operated heavy equipment in construction, drove tractor-trailers, was a superb mechanic, and managed aluminum servicing operations in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Maine. In more recent years he worked for Ryder Truck, Bangor. He was a member of Demolay and American Legion. Jack enjoyed a relentlessly active life of hunting, fishing, camping, auto racing – as a spectator and golfing. In more recent years you could find him at his companion’s much loved camp on Lower Lead Mountain Pond, relaxing, but more often busy upgrading it. Doing countless favors for friends and family was a continuing gift Jack brought to this world. In his last few years, he also became very attached to his dog, Fred, who was at his side constantly.
Jack is survived by his daughter, Lynn and husband, Jim Baldwin, of Triangle, Va.; three sons, David and wife, Jean Little, of San Diego, Donnie and wife, Michele Curried, of Bristol, Conn., and Duane and wife, Kathy Currie, of Westbrook; sister, Dawn-Marie and husband, Lloyd Barnes, of Gorham; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, four special nieces and eight nephews.
A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, at Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Hospice of Eastern Maine, 14 Access Highway, Caribou, ME 04736. Online condolences may be sent to www.dolbyfuneralchapels.com.
