Two bloggers who lost an outlet when Down East magazine cut its paid blogs have found new homes for their writing.
Mike Tipping, who writes about politics and works for the Maine People’s Alliance and the Maine People’s Resource Center, now blogs for the BDN’s politics section as of last week at thetippingpoint.bangordailynews.com.
And media watchdog Al Diamon will write for Portland monthly magazine The Bollard starting in September, according to publisher Chris Busby.
“We’re thrilled” to have Diamon join the magazine, Busby said. “He’s an old colleague of mine from the Casco Bay Weekly days.”
Diamon will write a monthly column for The Bollard and several smaller pieces of media criticism for the magazine’s website, thebollard.com, which is hosted by the BDN.
Diamon and Tipping were two of Down East’s more popular bloggers, the magazine’s CEO told the BDN two weeks ago.
“Those are the two big ones we debated long and hard about what we should do,” Bob Fernald said. “At the end of the day, people were coming just for the blogs.”
The BDN also picked up outdoors blogger George Smith before Down East announced it would be cutting its paid bloggers.
Yes, but the problem with BDN’s politics section is that you must have a Facebook account to comment.
Ain’t gonna happen from this end. Question is why have Facebook, and all its known problems (esp. for users’ privacy) when BDN has a perfectly good set up here with Disqus???
Not to mention a really hard to read choice of sans-serif typeface there. Again, why reinvent the wheel (and– come up with a poorer solution) when you have a particularly readable type at this current location???
