ORONO, Maine — A chain-reaction accident in Orono sent one person to the hospital early Thursday morning, according to police.
Orono police Officer Stephen Marko said Carlo Pinto, 50, of Orono wasn’t able to stop in time when another vehicle was turning left from College Avenue onto North Main Street.
The accident occurred around 8:15 a.m. in front of the University Inn, just west of downtown, according to Marko.
Pinto’s pickup truck rear-ended a Honda Fit driven by Emily Chavis, 24, of Orono, and the chain reaction caused Chavis’ vehicle to hit Gail White, 61, also of Orono.
The three vehicles were heading westbound on Route 2 towards downtown, Marko said.
While Chavis and White weren’t injured in the accident, Pinto suffered minor injuries and was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center for treatment. Marko said Chavis was alert and talking to authorities at the scene.
“He wasn’t able to stop,” Marko said of Pinto.
Pinto’s pickup truck suffered some damage to its front end while Chavis’ vehicle was totaled. White’s car had a minor mark on the rear bumper but was otherwise not damaged, according to Marko.

Another chain reaction from lack of attention. At least the little Toyota folded as designed and she was unharmed.
In what calendar year did driver safety classes stop teaching drivers to pull close to the center line when making a left hand turn from a two-lane road? This problem is now an epidemic. PULL OVER to let traffic approaching from the rear room to proceed. Use common sense, don’t come to a dead stop on a busy highway after you fail to “PULL TO THE CENTER LINE”!!!!! This action should be an unlawful act, and used as the preponderance of evidence for causing an accident.
1918?
Maybe it would help to stop tailgating and pay attention to whats going on in front of them? Slow down? It was never taught to crowd the center line, actually just the opposite. It is also illegal to pass on the right.
Looking at the whole picture, people in the oncoming lane don’t know if a line hugger is going to just cut them off in a left hand turn and that could cause an accident.
If people wish to do things that are illegal and unsafe, don’t expect people to think like them do expect to get sued if you cause an accident.
People also need to put their blinker on at a reasonable distance before turning, thats not during the turn or 5 feet before turning/stopping
why do people have to be so IGNORANT about stuff……this happens EVRYDAY……we live in MAINE….people need to understand that……that says it ALL right there….I need to say NO MORE
Sounds like texting or cell phone. I increasingly see people not moving after their light turns green. They are staring at their laps texting. I’ve also seen a huge increase in higher speed rear end accidents that can only happen when someone isn’t looking at what’s ahead of them.
It is impossible to turn left from College Ave onto N. Main St. Turning left onto N. Main means the driver was on Main St. at the bridge. If one turned left from College Ave they would be on Park St. not N. Main nor Main. I find this story confusing.
