ORONO, Maine — A chain-reaction accident in Orono sent one person to the hospital early Thursday morning, according to police.

Orono police Officer Stephen Marko said Carlo Pinto, 50, of Orono wasn’t able to stop in time when another vehicle was turning left from College Avenue onto North Main Street.

The accident occurred around 8:15 a.m. in front of the University Inn, just west of downtown, according to Marko.

Pinto’s pickup truck rear-ended a Honda Fit driven by Emily Chavis, 24, of Orono, and the chain reaction caused Chavis’ vehicle to hit Gail White, 61, also of Orono.

The three vehicles were heading westbound on Route 2 towards downtown, Marko said.

While Chavis and White weren’t injured in the accident, Pinto suffered minor injuries and was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center for treatment. Marko said Chavis was alert and talking to authorities at the scene.

“He wasn’t able to stop,” Marko said of Pinto.

Pinto’s pickup truck suffered some damage to its front end while Chavis’ vehicle was totaled. White’s car had a minor mark on the rear bumper but was otherwise not damaged, according to Marko.
