MADAWASKA, Maine — A St. Agatha woman escaped injury but a storefront was damaged Wednesday afternoon after the building was hit by a car.
Madawaska Police Officer Matt Derosier said Thursday that the incident took place just before 2 p.m. at the Family Dollar store.
According to Derosier, 67-year-old Irma Sirois was pulling into a parking space in front of the building when she either hit the gas pedal instead of the brakes or simply failed to hit the brakes of her 2004 Mercury Sable. The car jumped a sidewalk curb and plowed into a picture window in the store.
Sirois’ vehicle also struck a 2005 GMC sport utility vehicle in the process. The vehicle was parked in the lot, Derosier said, and two people were inside it. They were not injured.
The store had to close temporarily so employees could clean up the mess and temporarily repair the window. Derosier said some merchandise in the store was damaged when Sirois’ car hit it.
Derosier said Sirois was unable to explain what really happened. He said both cars involved had minor damage, and were driven from the scene.
No charges will be filed, he said.

Mes brakes marche pas kaliss…
Thanks for a good laugh! I’m glad nobody was hurt. It could have been much worse!
How does that happen? The brake has been on the left for the last 100 years.
It can happen to anybody…..just not paying attention I guess…..maybe distracted by something.
Incidents like this took place often on Cape Cod, where I lived and worked for years. I hate to say it, because it sounds like age discrimination, but it usually happened with senior citizens more than other group. When I reach the point that I cannot tell the brake pedal from the gas pedal, I will give up driving.
She may have been on some type of medication. Just because the label on a prescription bottle advises against operating a motor vehicle doesn’t mean people heed the warning.
She probably said: “Me I tink dat wuz a driv tru dere me”
funny
It is now.
With the location of the store — this couldn’t have been easy to do.
