LIMESTONE, Maine — The last meeting of the Limestone Board of Selectpeople sent waves of discontent reverberating through the community when the board voted to terminate the town fire chief’s contract as of Oct. 15. As of Tuesday afternoon the fire chief’s job has since been saved, two selectpeople have resigned from their elected positions and a recall petition is circulating through the community to remove the remaining three board members.

During a special meeting of the selectpeople on Aug. 20, the board reversed its decision to terminate Fire Chief Paul Durepo as the town’s fire chief and, instead, hire a new chief for $10,000, as estimated by selectperson Jesse Philbrick.

The controversial motion to remove the fire chief was made during the board’s regularly scheduled meeting on Aug. 15 — just one month after the board tried to remove the Limestone Police Chief from office.

During the Aug. 15 meeting, Philbrick reported that the contract Limestone has with Fort Fairfield for the services of Fire Chief Paul Durepo lapsed two years ago. Philbrick then offered a means of cost savings.

“We’re currently paying $21,100 for Paul’s services, and I feel that we can hire a chief for around [$10,000], hire our own chief with our department. I’d like to have you fellows just think on it,” Philbrick said. “The budget committee, they want us to save money, and this is a way to do it. You can save yourselves $11,000 pretty easy. I think I’m going to make a motion that we look into this and ought to terminate the contract as of Sept. 1 and if we can save ourselves some money, save it.”

Selectperson Gary O’Neal seconded the motion, and asked Philbrick “if that does go through, do you have any plans made how we take care of that decision after that time?”

Philbrick said he thought “someone would step up,” and conceded to O’Neal’s request that the date be extended to Oct. 1 instead of Sept. 1.

At that point in the meeting, selectperson Tom Devoe interjected.

“This is just for discussion, right?” he asked Philbrick.

Philbrick replied that he was making a motion.

“I understood it a little different when we started,” Devoe said.

As the board began discussing logistics regarding the two other parties involved in the fire chief’s contract — the Loring Development Authority and the town of Fort Fairfield — the issue of equipment entered the conversation.

Selectperson Danny Gahagan asked whether the town would have to begin looking for a new fire truck, as the truck Limestone currently uses belongs to Fort Fairfield. Gahagan suggested that the board may have to call an emergency meeting of the budget committee.

“It’s Fort Fairfield’s truck,” Gahagan said. “If you discontinue their services, they’re going to take their truck and go home.”

“That’s been the whole trouble,” Philbrick replied. “[Chief Durepo] has things tied up so bad that we don’t have any control of nothing here.”

Devoe suggested that approving the motion would at least get the involved parties together to discuss the lapsed contract for the fire chief.

Devoe, O’Neal and Philbrick voted in favor of terminating the fire chief’s contract as of Oct. 15; Gahagan opposed the motion, and Pelletier abstained from the vote, which he clarified on Monday evening was because he questioned the legality of the motion.

Durepo, who’d been given no notice that his contract was in question, didn’t attend the Aug. 15 meeting.

“[Town Manager Donna Bernier] called me after the selectpeople’s meeting and said ‘Paul, where were you?’ I told her I was home watching television,” Durepo said. Bernier then informed Durepo that he’d been fired.

Despite the intent of the board, Durepo said he was very confident he wouldn’t lose his job.

“Because of community support, for one thing, but the second thing is that the selectpeople, again, in one swoop, broke half the labor laws of this country,” he said.

On Aug. 16, the morning following the meeting, Gahagan submitted his resignation.

On Aug. 17, Pelletier submitted his resignation as well; Devoe verbally stated his intent to resign the same day, but later rescinded.

While both Gahagan and Pelletier have submitted resignations, they remain selectpeople until their resignations have been approved by the board during the next regularly scheduled meeting, which will be 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at the municipal building.

Though the board reversed its decision to terminate the fire chief’s contract during a special meeting held on Aug. 20, petitions were widely circulated around town on Aug. 17 calling for the recall of Pelletier, O’Neal, Devoe and Philbrick.

Assisting with the growing movement to recall the entire board are Gahagan and Durepo.

Late Tuesday afternoon, Durepo estimated that the group had collected about 170 signatures on each of four petitions. A recall requires signatures equal to 25 percent of the number of votes cast in the last gubernatorial election in Limestone, or about 160 votes in this case.

While some of the signatures already have been submitted to the town office for verification, the petitions are still circulating to ensure that the number of legitimate signatures has been met — and Durepo says collecting signatures is pretty easy to do.

“The consensus is that we need a completely new board of selectmen — 100 percent — and that the people in town are sick and tired of the local small-town politics with people getting elected only so they can fulfill their own vendettas against other citizens, and especially town employees,” Durepo said. “It’s the consensus of the citizens that we’d be better off with no board than the board we have — that’s what I’m hearing.”

Pelletier submitted his resignation on Friday and said that his biggest influence to do so was the Aug. 15 board meeting when the motion was approved to terminate the fire chief’s contract.

“I abstained because I did not feel that the motion was legal, not in the sense that a motion was made, but in the sense of what the motion was trying to do,” Pelletier said. “We just went through it with the police chief and it’s almost exactly the same.”

During the July 18 meeting of the Limestone Board of Selectpeople, the board unanimously approved the reappointment of every department head except for Limestone’s Police Chief Stacey Mahan.

After legal opinions were obtained by both the town and the police chief, however, the board reversed its decision two weeks later and, on Aug. 1, approved Mahan as head of the Police Department during their regularly scheduled meeting.

The special meeting on Aug. 20 marked the second time this month that the board has rescinded the termination of a department head.

“My big concerns are my employees,” expressed Town Manager Bernier. “I have employees that are very nervous right now, obviously with the last couple of actions taken by the board. I have a couple of them that are very nervous, thinking ‘I might be next,’ so in all of this turmoil, I may lose valued employees.”

“Turmoil” is a word Durepo also used to describe the situation in Limestone.

“The turmoil that this board has created, [is] not only with the town manager, the police chief and the fire chief, it’s all the departments and the citizens,” Durepo said, describing his current concerns for the town. “They’ve created this turmoil pitting citizens against citizens and nothing can be accomplished. Everything you try to do, someone is there trying to stop you from moving forward with something positive.”

The feeling that the board has been operating on personal agendas and vendettas is a concern for Gahagan.

“That was a big reason I resigned in the first place,” he said. “Once you put your own personal needs or your own personal vendettas before the town’s business, then you stop doing the town’s business — you’re working for yourself and you’re not working for the citizens that elected you.”

He described how over the past few months, the town has been looking to change ambulance services from Crown Ambulance to the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department. Gahagan’s son is currently employed by Crown.

“When that [ambulance contract] was batted around, I knew that my son would probably be laid off,” Gahagan described. “But then I had to look at the citizens of Limestone and realize that we’re going to get a better service here, and sometimes you have to take a step back and look at the big picture.”

If the two current resignations are approved, replacing the vacated selectpeople seats would require a nomination process followed by an election.

Should the remaining three board members be removed through the recall petition, the Limestone Board of Selectpeople would enter uncharted territory for the town.

The voters first approved the town’s recall ordinance on June 8, 2010.

“That’s why in the history of the town it’s never been done,” Bernier said. “Prior to that, we didn’t have a recall provision.”

Under the ordinance, the recall would initiate a townwide vote, where residents would be asked, “Shall [selectperson’s name] be recalled from the Limestone Board of Selectpeople?”

Bernier said he didn’t know what course of action to take to get the board back up to its five-person capacity should any selectperson be recalled.

“I’d have to get a legal opinion on that,” she said. “At this point, I don’t know.”

Regardless, Gahagan and Durepo are adamant that a new board is needed.

Going forward, Gahagan said he would like to see Limestone’s registered voters sign the recall petitions.

“I would like to see [O’Neal and Philbrick] removed from office because I truly believe that they’re not serving the best interests of the town,” Gahagan said on Friday after hearing that Devoe was submitting his resignation — which Devoe later rescinded.

“They’re only serving their own personal interests and I’d like to see a fresher board come on board that’s interested in serving for the benefit of the citizens of Limestone.”

During the special selectpeople’s meeting on Aug. 20, Gahagan asked for answers regarding Philbrick’s initial motion to remove the fire chief.

“You need to explain yourself,” Gahagan told Philbrick.

Though still a selectperson until his resignation has been accepted, Gahagan chose not to sit with the board and instead opted to stand next to over half a dozen firefighters sporting their firefighter-blue uniforms.

“If you’re going to be in this discussion, you need to come sit over here,” Philbrick said, gesturing to Gahagan’s normal seat, “not in the audience.”

“My thing was to save some money,” Philbrick said, before Selectperson Chair Jimmy Pelletier interjected:

“On the agenda tonight, there’s no public debate; we’re here to solve an issue that was brought up. I think we all understand sitting here how the public feels, otherwise we wouldn’t be sitting here. There wouldn’t be petitions going around town,” he said.

“Just the fact that there’s a recall going around to boot you guys out, that’s the first time in the history of Limestone,” Gagahan said. “You guys have to be more judgmental of your actions.”

“I thought we weren’t supposed to have a discussion,” said O’Neal, directing his speech toward Pelletier.

“Oh, so we’re not supposed to speak now Gary?” Gahagan said. “You’ll deny us our freedom of speech?”

“Danny, I’m going by what’s on this agenda.” O’Neal answered.

“Gary, you’ve been going by your own agenda ever since you got on the board,” Gahagan said.

“All I want to do is get this over tonight,” Pelletier said, ending the dialogue between Gahagan and O’Neal and pushing the motion to reconsider the Aug. 15 decision to terminate the fire chief contract. Of the four-man board, Pelletier, Philbrick and Devoe voted in favor of reconsidering the motion; O’Neal opposed.

The selectpeople then voted to reverse their decision to terminate the contract; again, Pelletier, Philbrick and Devoe voted in favor with O’Neal opposing.

From start to finish, the special meeting of the board lasted under four minutes.

  1. First off, I find it hilarious that no one in the supposed journalism community has reported that Danny Gahagan is Paul Durepo’s brother in law.  He had as much of a personal agenda when he decided to run for the board as anyone else supposedly did.  Nor did anyone report that Jimmy Pelletier is a firefighter under Paul Durepo.  As a Limestone taxpayer (yes I pay my taxes unlike Durepo & Durepo which went belly up and owes thousands of back personal property taxes) I support any effort to reduce administration cost in Limestone.  We have high taxes and not much for services to show for that huge tax bill.  The fact is that Danny Gahagan is a quitter.  If he cared so much about the integrity of Limestone and its board of selectmen, he would have stood his ground and not resigned when his family member got the shaft.  He also should have abstained from voting on anything related to his family.  It is a shame that our elected town government has no authority over the town and that we are forced to be stuck with a Fire Chief who takes his municipal vehicle up to the lake during the weekend towing his personal watercraft toys and buys beer in uniform while using said municipal vehicle…yeah there’s a great role model for the Limestone youth!

Go ahead and petition.  I am all for seeing what all the voters want and not just a specialty group.  It will be a shame if we get rid of some of these board members who really care about our town and our tax rate.  Remember the grass is always greener on the other side so don’t come crying when we have a 6 mil tax increase because the department heads get whatever they want.  And as for Donna Bernier…she is half the reason why this town is in such a bad position.  We have a town manager who doesn’t keep records for crap and who obviously lets much of the towns business fall through the cracks.  Why on earth have we had no new contract with Fort Fairfield in 2 years?  Shame on you Donna for letting our Police Department and Fire Department get so far out of your control!

    1. You Sir have it 100% right This is prob the first board of Selectmen that he didn’t have total control over  It also should be known that he reportedly had meetings prior to the selectmen’s ” Official” meeting to tell them how to vote…   or the Bangor trips with the municipal vehicle or where he sued the town in the past…the list goes on and on

    2. Durepo’s son is one of his full time Firemen up to Loring. Equal opportunity employer? I think not! Shady. Durepo & Durepo is bunkrupt and gone, the new venture is now “Big Dog Pressure Wash!” FIRE THEM BOTH!

      1. I tend to agree Mr. Cyr.  Durepo Junior is always in town driving that poor firetruck ragged.  Why on earth do taxpayers need to pay for gas for Junior to grocery shop on the clock?  On any given day, you might just see Junior down at Mike’s getting some groceries…hey here’s a novel idea Junior – grocery shop on your own time and in your own vehicle!

Limestone Uncensored – I heard someone say once that they saw Paul Durepo’s municipal vehicle down at Hollywood Slots…I can’t attest to that because I did not see it with my own eyes but I would not put it past him.

        1. I personally cant attest to the Hollywood slots situation  I often wonder if the owner of that truck (town of fort Fairfield) knew about the misuse

    3. I hope that the people who don’t support this come out when it is time to vote.  It would be a shame to see this happen in town with the votes of a “specialty group”.  What everyone needs to do is stop fighting and let the town decide.  THE ENTIRE TOWN!

Come out and support our selectmen who have not quit yet and who do actually care about Limestone, it’s people and most of all our tax rate.

    4. As bad as these comments look, they are all fact. I have witnessed our great Fire Chief stop at Hometown Fuels in the municipal vehicle and come out with a case of beer….sometimes even in uniform…yes in uniform.

As a taxpayer in Fort Fairfield you can imagine my frustration when calling the Fire Department day after day with no answer or no on returning my messages…yes the Fire Chief. I thought the Fire Chief who’s salary is being paid 50% by Fort Fairfield taxpayers has been told he has to spend 50% of his day in Fort Fairfield. It’s NOT happening.

The Fire Chief doesn’t even work a full day. Driving through Limestone on my way home to Fort you can see the vehicle parked at his house at 2pm almost every day.

Dan Foster, the Town Manger is the Fire Chief’s boss. I think Mr. Foster needs to stop listening to the lies of the Fire Chief and start asking around for the real truth.

Paul Durepo needs to be fired for MANY MORE reasons than the ones I’ve stated. Please Mr. Foster, look into this!

    5. j, who in Limestone isn’t related???? I do agree going to the store and buying an adult beverage in uniform or in a municipal vehicle is not a good thing, I would hope that Fort Fairfield would have a policy prohibiting that.

    6. What a shame on the mess we are in. One of the real issues that has come to light is that this conglomeration of fire departments was most likely created so that there is no real accountability. There is no one watching the three hen, or should I say firehouses. It is time for the selectmen to make a stand and do what needs to be done. I live in Limestone, work in another community, but pay my fair share of taxes. If Dan Foster accepts this behavior of his fire chief, then we need to separate ourselves from this. We need to do what we can to keep what I feel is the only consistent ambulance service we will ever have in this town. If that means getting rid of the chief, so be it. I will see you at the next meeting.

    1. Bangor needs to do it.. This council has put us in more debt in 2/3 years then in the whole history of Bangor combined

  2. Keep in mind, NEWBURGH, MAINE.  Never enough local citizens want to devote time to their community so nothing much ever gets changed or updated. Its up to the people and when they do not want to invest in their town, its a lost cause and will remain corrupt and uncontrolled. The state and the town representatives won’t help either. So good luck……………

  3. There is nothing wrong with a little conflict in government.  If people on the board are related and or work for someone that is being considered for employment and or salary increases then the ethical thing to do is to obstain.  The important thing about this article is that information did not get included.  Next the comment about sticking with yhour elected position to help create change was well stated.  How do you let another community loan you one of their pieces of equipment and get wraped around the axel that if they went home they would take their toys with them.  That in itself is poor planning for the protection of your community.  It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

  4. Good grief, what a convoluted mess.  If I was a Limestone resident I’d have some real concerns about public safety in such a hostile environment.

  5. The citizens of Houlton should consider recalling some or most of the people on their town council as well.

After seeing who the Houlton town council hired for a new town manager proves that the council operates with only personal agendas in mind.

  6. Being a former resident of Limestone for many years it saddens me that the town has gotten to the place it is currently in. However it is not at all suprising.  I think it is because of a total lack of leadership and vision that the town is where it is. People like Jesse Philbrick,Tom Devoe and Donna Bernier  have been involved in town politics for a while and the town has been continually moving in a downward direction. For example does a town Limestone’s size need 11 members of the police force? Not to mention all the vehicles that they operate? Really? Also when you have people like Mr. Durepo who gives the appearance (I am not saying he does) that he uses his municipal vehicle for personal use it just leaves a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. I believe that Limestone should look at making sweeping changes not just to the selectpeople but also to people who have worked for the town for many years. The town should be attempting to grow and to get better and the people who have been in charge have almost nothing to show that they are helping the town move in the right direction. Might want to take a page out of your recreation directors book and think of new and innovative ways of representing the townspeople and bringing businesses to the town. Most of the elected officials (I did not say all) have run the town into the ground. Very sad.

    1. I think that you need to get some of your facts straight.  The board of selectmen tried to cut the Police Department but the town did not agree at a special town meeting so they dropped the issue.  The selectmen also have questioned why the police department has so many toys as well.  The Town Manager has control over the Police Department…she is Stacey Mahan’s boss and she should be asking these questions.  It SHOULD NOT be up to the selectmen to oversee the departments but unfortunately they had to step in since the town manager has not been doing her job!  Tom Devoe and Jesse Philbrick are not the only people that have been involved in town government for a long time…they did not get this town where it is without the help (or lack of help) of Paul Durepo’s flunkies like Freddie Pelletier or Jim Leighton (who are also a fire fighters).  Do you really think that they abstained from any vote that pertained to the Fire Department?  Don’t be fooled, they voted for the best interests of the Fire Department and not the town!  At least Tom and Jesse did not quit when the going got tough.

What Limestone really needs is not growth, it is to fix what it already has and without raising the taxes which are already high enough!  The economy cannot support big growth in a small town right now so how is that the fault of the selectmen?

  7. This should be included in the basic Selectmen 101 course…. Do not mess with a Fire Chief if the Chief has the support of the Department.  Especially a Volunteer Dept.   These folks know better!

  8. Last time they got rid of Chief Durepo is worked out very well for the town, so well as a matter of fact they ended up rehiring him! Same goes for the Police force too! Every year people wonder who is on the chopping block, is it the fire chief, the police chief, maybe the town manager, lets cut some stuff (staff) from the school, the rec director, maybe its time for the highway commissioner to go? Every year, its another assinine idea because someone dosnt like someone and they can always do it better. Then low and behold after fighting, newspaper articles, and small town banter it all goes right back to “normal”.

Maybe the problem isnt cureable. You arnt going to stop the group of old people who know it all gathering outside of Hometown every morning. You arnt going to cure the fact that 3 buisness in town are all trying to cut the throat of the other guy by doing anything possible, ehtical or not, to make the other fail.

Everyone can do it better, untill they are asked to do it better, then they get run over like the rest. this town council is a joke, I think anyone can see that. When they have no discussion on major items (Chief Mahans deal) and then tell you there was no discussion outside of the meeting? Seriously folks?

How about this: How about we quit putting personal agendas infront of the towns. How about because you dont like Chief Durepo because he truck was at Hollywood slots (I cant confirm that, but I would imagine he was on one of his many trips to the southren part of the state for some sort of fire dept. meeting and stopped in on his own time to have a little fun. Just specualtion) you look at what he has done for the town. Is the fleet of trucks in good shape? They sure are! Limestone has the biggest tankers in the County! And they look good too. Hows the station? Looks top notch to me. How high is the turnover in the force? Seems real low to me. Have the fire fighters asked for a new chief? Sounds like he is doing somthing right. Lets ask those same questions of Chief Mahan. For the most part the answers are the same.

8 billion people in this world, we all dont have to agree, but we do have to coincide.

    1. Hey Jesse – which one do you work for – Durepo or Mahan?

I don’t care what Chief Durepo does on his personal time but when he is buying beer and gambling while in a municipal vehicle it is WRONG!!!

At what cost to the town of Limestone has all this fancy equipment come?  I would rather have a fire department who can save my house than have a fire department with a big shiny truck that doesn’t seem to have a very good record for saving structures!

Just because a person does a lot for a town does not make his indiscretions disappear!  Mr. Durepo has also cost this town a lot of money by running Crown Ambulance out…now we are forced to go with Caribou (or is his real agenda to get his long coveted ambulance service up and running)!  And FYI we do not have a town council, it is a board of selectmen that Limestone voters chose so how about we let them all have their say and decide what is best for this town not what is best for the fire department.  How about they get to vote in private where they can vote their conscience and not feel bullied by what repercussions may happen if they don’t sign your petition.  It is obvious that many people are not happy with the outside activities that Chief Durepo conducts while in uniform and in a vehicle paid for by taxpayers!

The sad fact is that no matter what happens with Chief Durepo, this town is going broke by the minute and we need to stop spending money that we do not have.  We need to have contracts with surrounding towns that look out for our best interest and not the best interests of lining peoples pockets.  We need to have a board of selectmen who are not afraid or intimidated to make changes and to listen to the entire voter community to see what they all want to do!  How about you give us some ideas to cut costs so our taxes don’t keep going up?

And just one more thing…if you live in Limestone, how often do you see our police cars patrolling?  The only time I see them is on their way back from the base.  If the base needs that much protection they should have Job Corp hire some security…oh but that would interfere with our police officer’s social time out there at the FIRE DEPARTMENT!!!

      1. I work for neither. My name is Jesse Michaud and I work for private company out of Presque Isle. Currently I live on Webster Ave in Limestone. I am not anonymous or choose to hide behind any screen names.

I couldnt tell you how often the police cars patrol, I am not that nosey! I can tell you as I putter away in the garage many nights it isnt uncommon to see the police vehicle, be it the car or the truck ride by.

I dont have any ideas on cutting taxes. I never said I did. What I did say is instead of Monday morning quaterbacking at Hometown, perhaps a more logical solution could be figured out was all.

As for the rest of your post, I have no rebuttle. Why should I? Your agenda is very personal, and that shows. Heck you post by the name of “j”. Thats a concerned citizen right there. So concerned they wont show there name!

  9. What I see in these comments is interesting.  People making statements about things they have no real information on.  Yes people have made it in the town report for owing taxes, Gary O’Neal, Jesse Philbrick both board members for example.  I saw their names in there more than a business that no longer exists.  Not to mention that Tom Devoe would have nothing if it was not for his father giving him the farm.  How about all the “farmers” listed that owe taxes.  Remember folks there is a big difference between personal property taxes and real estate taxes.  j you seem to have the pulse of the fire department and must know a lot about how things there work.  I am sure you know that the fire chief’s vehicle and gas is paid for by Fort Fairfield and also the fire truck that “junior” is driving is owned by the LDA or the Maine Forestry Service. All fire fighters are required to be available to calls when they are working and when anyone goes to town to get groceries for the fire station they take a department vehicle. This is the same for any agency that has a 24hr shift, like an ambulance crew for example. So they shouldn’t buy groceries at a local business such as Mike’s?  I am sure with the economy the way it is business’s in Limestone will accept the patronage of all entities within the community to help them survive.  I can say from what I have read if everyone in the town report paid the real estate taxes for 2011 the town would receive over $250,000.00, wouldn’t that be nice. j do you even know what kind of money a 6 mil increase is?  That would be a $ 300,000.00 increase, the town manager and the board do not control what the department heads want or get, the citizens do when they come to the town meeting and vote on the budget.

I think we can all say that the individuals that run for the board ALL have had their personal agendas.  I would say for a long time now no one has been on the board to do whats best for the town as a whole.  Why does the citizens keep electing people that have done nothing to better the community with their actions on the board?  Can anyone name one thing in the last 10 years that the board as a whole has accomplished that has been beneficial to the citizens?  So j can you explain how the fire department and police department by your statement are “out of control”, what type of control are you talking about?

maineboy34 how many of the police officers are full time or part time?  That department is running a 24 hr a day coverage with only 2 full time officers, and the other 7 are part time filling in 4600 hours a year to keep the level of police coverage as asked for by the citizens of Limestone.  As for the vehicles they have 3, one they just got as voted on by the citizens, one they received from the military for free and a suv that they at this time they have in storage.  I absolutely agree with you on the focus needs to be growth and the fact that the people on the board have almost nothing to show that they are helping the town move in the right direction.  Focus on building the community, not tearing it apart would be a nice change.  Also you are right the same people running for the board and being elected that do nothing will continue to do nothing.  I hope for Limestone’s sake when the dust clears people who truly are interested in the better of the community run for the board and when on find out what the board’s purpose really is and follows the rules set for them and work towards a goal that helps the community.

To Melissa Devoe, if you think that people like Tom Devoe, Jesse Philbrick and Gary O’neal are not on that board as a “specialty group” your missing something in the translation.  If people like them truly cared about “Limestone, it’s people and most of all our tax rate” then they would do something productive to help.  Such as grants, bringing in commerce, and working to keep the businesses that we have now.  For example does anyone know that a large business here in town is moving to Fort Fairfield?  I agree with you Ms. Devoe, I hope that people do come out and support what is right for the town as a whole and help put this community in the right direction.  All this special  interest politics has made the town look like a joke to everyone in the state and with the help of the web even farther.

I must say what kind of money has it cost the town with the board doing something that they were not suppose to do “twice” now?  The attorney that represents the town can’t be cheap. They tried to illegally get rid of the police chief and then the fire chief, if someone sues the board or the town who really loses?  I can tell you the tax payer does.  So I would say when we vote it would be in the best interest for everyone to look at who is running for the board and the true reason why they are running, not just because they are related to someone or have been on the board before.

You may ask, how does cntyboy4life know these things? Because I asked department heads and the town manager for answers. Go to the source and get direct feed back, why ask someone that does not know or worse, someone that “thinks” they know.

    1.  I can’t speak for anyone else but I can speak for my family and a personal attack on Tom was not called for!  He has worked VERY hard on that farm all his life and the fact that Arthur is no longer well enough to farm is none of yours or anyone’s business!  Furthermore, what Arthur did with his part of the farm is also none of your business!  Tom is the only 1 of 4 sons who choose the farming path with his father.  I guess that family farmers are just supposed to sell their land off once they are done and say “to heck with my son who has been by my side all these years and continues to take care of me”?  Tom and Kristin both brought land into their farming business and have more than a farm to show for their efforts!  You have no idea what kind of people they are and how much volunteer work they do both inside and outside of Limestone.  Sure it would be easy for Tom to quit as other selectmen have done but I can tell you that he is not doing this to make anyone else happy (hell I don’t think that he is doing it to make himself happy), he is doing it because he cares about Limestone.

By the way, were you at the meeting or did you watch the meeting because Tom stated very clearly that he voted for the motion so that the towns (Limestone, LDA and Fort Fairfield) could get to the bargaining table and negotiate a new contract.  He was not “out to get” Paul Durepo, he only wanted to get a contract with Fort that was fair to all involved.

  10. I’m going to throw this out there now in hopes of saving myself a few phone calls (having already fielded a few)…    I am not Medicman101.   Thanks.
