Festival-goers and organizers alike could not possibly have asked for a nicer weekend for the American Folk Festival on the Bangor Waterfront — an average daytime high of 80, a slight breeze and abundant sunshine, followed by cool and crisp evenings. The thousands of people who eagerly listened, danced and ate their way through the three days of the event certainly lucked out.
“It was such a bummer last year, when Irene came through and Sunday was canceled,” said Mary Thompson of Bangor. “I think we made up for it this year.”
Festival-goers could be seen devouring ice cream cones, sporting “I Kicked In” stickers and checking the schedule on the new AFF iPhone and Android apps. As of Sunday afternoon, AFF executive director Heather McCarthy was very pleased with both the turnout and the overall vibe of the 2012 festival. There’s no word yet on an official count as far as attendance goes — nor as to what the final haul for the bucket brigade is — but McCarthy seemed satisfied with this 11th annual AFF.
“The weather cooperated, the audience is great, and the artists have made lots of new fans from near and far,” said McCarthy. “Now we’re looking forward to the 2013 festival.”
As is true with each successive festival, there are too many highlights to count. For some, it was the sweet-voiced bluegrass of Kentucky native Dale Ann Bradley, who delighted audiences with her storytelling, her original songs and even a bluegrass cover of U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” For others, it was the Croatian ensemble Otrov, who played the infectious and beautiful music of the Balkans. For the large crowd assembled at the Dance Pavilion on Saturday night, it was the one-two punch of blues phenom Marquise Knox, followed by the fiery-hot sounds of salsa Band La Excelencia.
And for nearly everyone, the countless treats offered up by food vendors kept bellies full and folks fueled for dancing and singing — from the legendary gyros and souvlaki served by St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church to crabmeat rolls and fresh-cut french fries from Fresh Catch.
Up next on the Bangor Waterfront are three days of performances as part of the Waterfront Concert Series, including Big Time Rush and Cody Simpson on Aug. 31, Keith Urban on Sept. 1 and Jason Aldean on Sept. 2.

trifecta, yeah, sounds about right, lol.
A wonderful event. But the absence of Gov. LePage was a downer for many of us. Hope he comes next year and beyond.
why?
They need a baffoon to sit up on the dunk seat.
Weren’t you there?
I believe the line for that particular seat was already quite long. A gathering of the strange.
I believe that’s “buffoon.”
Or “baboon” – which would make it a dung seat?
No, I said baffoon, one of a kind, just like LePage.
That would be his next to last time as Gov., I doubt I would have gone if I knew he was going to be there unless it was to see how far he would stick his foot into his mouth.
I bet your wrong, ill bet he will get another four years
He has two chances of getting another 4 years, slim and none, and now we find slim has left Maine so we are left with none.
The bet is on, if he is back in you owe me a apology we will see soon
people are pretty happy with LePage, I expect him to be reelected
thank you to all volunteers and those that helped out, it was fun, three long exhausting days but fun
Why do we have to turn an article out about wonderful musical and social event into a political discussion? Please people, let it be. Hats off to the organizers and volunteers for another great festival. Well done. I hope the financials come out in the black this year.
We went Saturday, donated, walked around listened to some music visted the Maine vendors and Ate.. I prefer a wider variety in music… Didn’t make it back Sunday. Every year till this year We went 2 days.. will try it one more year… OK,OK,OK I know there is a lot of hard work involved here OK! It’s important to make people want to return like you have done in the past.. what happened did a single person dominate the music committe.. If I said it was OK how would you know to fix it.
you don’t think it’s a good idea to have 17 acts play an average of 3.5 sets per act?
not if they are all he same genre

Oh, and Pizza Pie on the Fly had great pizza again!
