LEWISTON, Maine — State and county police are responding to a fatal motorcycle accident on Route 202 at the Greene town line.

A portion of Route 202 has been closed and traffic re-routed around the accident that happened around 12:30 p.m.

According to an eyewitness, an Almighty Waste trash truck slowed to make a left turn onto a dirt lane near Schott’s surplus military vehicle storage. A motorcyclist was waiting at the stop sign to turn onto Route 202 when he was hit by the truck. The driver of the motorcycle fell under the truck and was crushed.

According to Androscoggin County Sheriff Guy Desjardins, the Almighty Waste truck had just finished its recycling pickup on the northbound side of Main Street in Lewiston and the driver was turning into the dirt lane to make his regular turnaround when the accident happened.

He was not wearing a helmet, according to the witness.

According to Desjardins, a skidmark in the northbound lane of Route 202 seems to indicate that the motorcyclist may have been behind the truck and was attempting to go around it as the truck was making its left turn.

A state police reconstruction team and officers from the state’s Commercial Vehicle Division were at the scene mid-afternoon Monday and more information will be reported as it becomes available.

Hours after the accident, the city of Lewiston posted a notice that recycling pickup on Outer Main Street would be delayed until Tuesday because of the accident.

The name of the motorcyclist will not be released until after police have notified next of kin.

  1. “He was not wearing a helmet, according to the witness.”  Like it would’ve mattered if in fact he was crushed under the truck.  Condolences to this man’s family and friends.

    1. I want to say once again. If the person is not wearing a helmet thats the first thing the news will say.If they are wearing one it is never mentioned. The people in other cars trucks ,need to give people on motorcycles a fair chance.I have ridden for almost 40 years now.I just can not believe how alot of motorists do very rude things to people on bikes.   God rest the gentleman who lost his life on his bike.

      1. Hey Goldwing…How you doing?  Hey, remember me?  We spoke awhile back, that I hoped one day to have a Goldwing of my own?  Bought one last weekend!  (Okay, so, it’s an older version, not the GL1800, but, it’s my first ‘wing.  :-)

  2. From the article: He was not wearing a helmet, according to the witness.

As if a helmet would have prevented him from being crushed to death. What a horrible way to die.

    RIP

  3. Wear a helmet anyway, this accident is not typical.  Wear a helmet – and show regard for the EMS personnel.

Does one part of the story say the motorcyclist was stopped at a stop sign and that the truck turned into him, or was the motorcycle trying to pass the truck as it was turning.

    1. What do the EMS personnel do in regard to the people that they find dead with a helmet on.???????????????????????????????????????????????

    2. If you figure out the story, let me know.  Sounds like eye witnesses report a motorcycle stopped at a stop sign waiting to turn and skid marks indicate that he was behind the truck trying to pass it….Hmmmmmmmmm.  I’m extremely confused

      1. I am an eye witness, he was not at a stop sign he was behing the trash truck when he went to pass and the truck hit him the ran over him crushing him. I dont understand some poeples thinking is when they say “if he was wearing a helmet” it could have saved his life. Well that is not a fact he got hit and crushed by a 35-40 ton truck.

my condoulances to micheals family and friends. GOD MAY U TAKE MICHEAL INTO UR HOME AND REST HIM IN PEACE.

        1. Thank you for the clarification.  The story was conflicting and confusing.  I’m sorry that you witnessed such an event.  Condolences to everyone involved in this tragedy.

    3. HE WAS NOT STOPPED HE WAS TRYING TO PASS. I WAS HEADING TO AUGUSTA SAW THE WHOLE THING. THERE ARE TOO MANY DIFFERNT STORIES THEY NEED TO GET THE WHOLE STORY AND STOP POSTING SOME MANY DIFFERENT ONES OUT THERE.

  4. Did the trash truck have its turn signal on when it slowed? Otherwise, the motorcyclist had no reason to suspect the truck would be turning against him. It’s not so unusual to go around trash trucks.

  5. Such a horrible thing to happen. Condolences to friends and family of the deceased. To the truck driver and witnesses, I wish you all speedy healing from the horror of it all.
