INDUSTRY, Maine — Police say an Industry man fell to his death Saturday night after climbing a tree during his birthday celebration.

Jacob Chick, 21, climbed the tree and fell about 60 feet around 9:30 p.m. during a gathering at his home on the West Mills Road. He died from the fall, Lt. Niles Yeaton of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department said.

Chick’s birthday was two days before on Aug. 23.

The death was deemed an accident, according to Cpl. Kenneth Charles’ report, Yeaton said. Yeaton could not say whether alcohol was involved or why he climbed the tree.

Industry Fire Department’s first responders, NorthStar ambulance and police responded to the call.

  1. If he got as far as 60 feet high he must have not had too much to drink.  I used to climb trees when I was a teenager, but I did not drink alcohol then.  My condolences to the family of the victim.

  2. Another young person needlessly  lost. RIP peace Jacob. There’s an awful lot of press out there about not letting our friends drink and drive. What ever happened to just plain looking out for one another-drinking or not?I doubt that this young man was alone at his 21st birthday party. Those folks are going to grieve for their friend for a long time to come and wonder what they might have done different that night.Perhaps nothing. I’ve not read anything sadder this summer.

    1. Just because someone is with you, doesn’t mean things don’t happen in a split second. He could have been on his way down, missed a step, and fallen. I agree that people need to watch out for each other, and people need to be careful, but we don’t know that this man and his friends weren’t doing that, and he fell anyway.

      1. You make an excellent point. It just see an inordinate amount of young people needlessly being hurt or losing their lives while in the company of others. We can all do better.

        1. Yes, there have been lots of young lives lost recently! It is very sad at  how many there have been. Some may have been saved, if they had more people watching out for them.

  3. Darwinism thinning the herd? Seriously 60 feet were there any sober adults around? How completely tragic and unnecessary. I understand young people think they are invincible, but aren’t the elders in the crowd suppose to speak up.

      1. Too bad you weren’t at the party. I’m sick of the reckless behavior. We were coming up 46 at dusk on Sunday. A young man went flying by us on a motorcycle. Well your immediate response when u read in the paper A young person killed on a motorcycle how horrible to lose such a young life. But it’s really not as shocking as I use to think. Still horrible but not so shocking when you put your life at risk.

        1.  Young people aren’t the only ones. Accident yesterday, woman rear ended by a 70 years old man. Accident this weekend. 87 year old man drives into motorcyclists, can’t explain why…

        2.  I know the family closely, and you may be mad at the motorcyclist but this is no forum for that nonsense. He was already 60 feet up, hardly a feat of drunkeness. I am disgusted with you. This is an extremely painful loss for family and friends, and you sit in judgement, speaking out of ignorance. FOR SHAME!

          1. Annette this is not the obituaries. This is a public forum and from the looks of things someone better start judging or using judgement. A 19 year old lost to cancer is tragic. A 19 old either dying climbing 60 ft in the air or going a100 passing cars on curves is a horrible loss. Reckless behavior can and does lead to death. So if one person reads and thinks twice than something good will come out of this.

  4. no one at the party, his families, his friends told him not to do that,iy is dangerous?

im calling his family members and he friends out as a bunch  drunken losers yourselves

    1.  Guestnull, you have no idea….learn to spell and write complete sentences or we may think the same of you.

    2. That was a very heartless remark to make. Didn’t you do anything reckless when you were young? This just happens to be a tragic accident and you shouldn’t be calling out anyone from his famil or friends. Shame on you, these poor people are grieving and you dishonor him and them.
