NEW PORTLAND, Maine — A 24-year-old Embden man was killed and two others were seriously injured in a car crash Friday night that police say may be due to speed and alcohol.

Ryan Nile, the driver of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Wire Bridge Road in New Portland, according to a news release from Detective Lt. Carl Gottardi II of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

Two passengers — Nichole Nichols, 20, and Christopher Woodard, 27, both of Embden, were injured, according to the sheriff’s office. Nichols was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and Woodard was taken by ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington and later to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Woodard was listed in stable condition Saturday afternoon, according to a CMMC spokeswoman.

Nichols was listed in fair condition Saturday afternoon, according to an EMMC spokeswoman.

The crash occurred shortly after 9:30 p.m. The sheriff’s office reported that Nile lost control of a 1995 Chevrolet Corsica and it went off the road and struck a tree head on, just missing a home at 92 Wire Bridge Road.

The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office, which reports that speed and alcohol may have been factors. Maine State Police are assisting in the investigation. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, New Portland Fire Department, Sugarloaf Rescue Service, and A & M Ambulance also assisted at the crash scene.

Cpl. Eugene Cole and Deputy Don Avery responded to the crash from the Somerset County department.

The car was destroyed.

  1. My thoughts and prayers go out to all involved.  Included the EMT’s and firefighters who responded.  Thank you guys and gals who are our EMT’s and  the New Portland fire dept for always being there when needed.

  2. Come on people highway deaths due to drinking, speeding and texting are records we don’t want to break. The Maine roads this year have already surpassed last year. Let’s not try to break the all-time record. Condolences to the family who have lost their loved one and hopefully the other two will fully recover.

      1. Maybe he should have thought about his family and friends before he choose to drink and drive. He didn’t respect how his friends and family might feel if he killed himself, now did he?

      1. Not going to feel bad for someone that gets into a car when they know the person has been drinking.

        1.  Are you so perfect that you’ve never made a decision that could have had deadly consequences?

Besides, if he drank as often as another poster says he did, he may not have seemed inebriated. It IS possible that his passengers didn’t know he was impaired.

          1. It is very rare that people do not know the driver had been drinking and I never said I was perfect, now did I.

  3. If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say it at all. There are people who are unbelievably saddened. Yes, it was not the smartest choice for Ryan to be drinking and driving- But I’m sure not everyone is a saint. Be respectful and realize that he was a man who died too young with family and friends who loved him very much.

    1. And he caused his own death. He choose to drink and drive at a high rate of speed. Thankfully he didn’t kill an innocent person. He should have thought about how his actions might effect people such as yourself, but he didn’t.

  4. nobody is perfect, bottom line, have respect for his family and friends who lost him.your not the one who got a phone call saying someone special in your life has passed away.dont down and judge him for the mistake he made.remember him for the good and not the bad.have respect and dont say anything if its not nice.rest in peace ryan.we all love you.thoughts and prayers for friends and most of all family.

    1. And if he had killed an innocent person would you still feel the same way? I have zero respect for anyone that drinks and drives and ends up killing their self. My cousins daughter damn near killed herself years ago drinking and driving and I felt zero pity for her. Thankfully she has since turned her life around for the better but if she had died that night I would not have shed and tear for her own stupidity.

      1.  That’s because you are heartless. Saying that you wouldn’t shed a tear for a member of your own family if they had passed away after making a stupid mistake shows that you lack any feeling at all.

        1. It was her second DWI and she only learned from her second one because she could have died. Thankfully almost dying was her wake up call. I’m not going to pity or cry for someone when they choose to drink and drive. That doesn’t make me heartless, that makes me honest.

And if I was heartless I wouldn’t have helped save a mans life two weeks ago when he was drunk, stole a mini-van and crashed it into a tree.

          1. We don’t always agree Kevin, but I’m with you on this issue. Let’s hope this man you helped will get his life turned around.

          2. I hope he can as well for the sake of his 2 year old son. Sadly Ryan Nile doesn’t get another chance at life but he choose his path just as Michael Ralston did. While I helped saved his life I have zero pity for the choices he made that night.

  5. Being a friend of the Nile family, let me tell you all who are leaving negative comments on here..the family is in so much pain right now and seeing them like that makes my heart just ache and go out to them. Thankfully they are a big loving family and have a lot of support from friends. Doesn’t matter how anyone passed, you should never wish that on anyone or ever have to experience such a tragedy. The two passengers are both home and beggining their recovery process. So please really take everyone’s feelings into consideration about such tragedies….

  6. Ryan Nile lived his life with no regrets.  I always had a good time and never looked back.  I think that people that arecommenting on this page need to watch what they are saying.  His family is the ones that need support right now…not listening to all your trash talk.  And Kevin I dont know who you are and its a good thing cause I think you are a A@@.  I hope nothing ever happens to your perfect life cause I will be the first to respond!!!!!   RIP Ryan..you will always be loved and never forgotten….and hugs and kisses to all of the Nile family.

  7. For those of you that seem to have comments…..you have no clue who Ryan Nile was.  Ryan lived his life to the fullest.  He never looked back and enjoyed every minute of his life.  I dont think he ever regretted what he did in his life.  This accident is traggic, and you have enough balls to trash talk.  Remember Ryan is no longer here…its his parents and friends and family that are seeing your rude comments. I agree with another poster in that if you have nothing nice to say then dont say it at all.  As for Kevin Im so glad your life and family are so perfect…sounds to me like you are pretty cold hearted and Im glad your not part of my family!!!!  Leave your rude comments to yourself and respect the Nile Family.  What have they done to you?   Ryan you may be gone but you will NEVER be forgotten.  You touched so many lives.    As for the family…you know Ryan was loved and is still loved…I hope you are not reading all this rude comments cause you dont need to know how ignorant some people are.  RIP Ryan….we all love you!!!!!!

  9. Well I guess because he had a beer in his hand , makes him a bad person?  People that like to judge someone because of a newspaper story is low and unfair…period..  I guess because the article didn’t say that the car had a part break in the steering caused the crash , it must of been because he had a beer in his hand all the time was the cause rite jdtex?  I know for a FACT that there was only 4 beers drank between the 3 of them before the crash, so that makes it the cause rite ?Ryan lived his life on the edge and it was that way of life that was his demise, but because he was a free spirt it give you all a reason to bash and say negitive comment about him online, speed was involved, but everyone that likes to judge never speed do they, so from a person directly hurting from this , i ask two simple questions of you, why be so negitive about someone else? And have you ever in your life made a mistake and cause hurt for others? If you feel the need to voice your opinion’s, feel free, but just know the whole story before.. Thanks for your time..

  10. you know what Ryan DID’T always have a beer in his hand and you are WRONG…Ryan wasn’t drinking and driving the night he was killed.  Get your facts straight before running off at the mouth.

    1. I so agree Ellie.  Some people just like to run their mouths……they probably didnt even know Ryan……they just feel the need to spew at the mouth
