KENDUSKEAG – Laura Knox, 95, died Sept. 1, 2012, with family at home. She was born Dec. 9, 1916, in Ashland, the daughter of James and Gertrude (Burby) Brasselett.
Laura was married to Herbert Lester Knox of Presque Isle, who predeceased her after 31 years of marriage. After Herbert’s passing Laura opened a diner in Kenduskeag called Knox’s Diner, where she owned, managed and cooked. Prior to this she worked as a homemaker. While living in Presque Isle, Laura belonged to Daughters of Isabella at St. Mary’s Church and was an active member for a number of years. She was known for her homemade doughnuts, bread and cake decorating talents; she loved to cook. She was an avid gardener and shared her plants with family and friends. Home on the farm was an open door, safe haven for family and friends. Laura enjoyed making handmade quilts with her sisters, knitting and crocheting. She supported the Boy Scouts in Kenduskeag village. Laura was voted the Oldest Citizen of the Year for Kenduskeag in 2007. She loved and enjoyed all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Laura is survived by three children, Stanley James Knox and his wife, Sally, of Narragansett, R.I., Carolyn Marie Seifert and her husband, George, of Kenduskeag and Mary Ellen (Knox) Field of Caribou; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey, Matthew and wife, Susan, Jonathan and wife, Cindy, Geremy and friend, Amy Seifert, Michael and Bethany Knox, and Sherri and husband, Pierre Dumont; five great-grandchildren, Nicole Emerson, Sarah-Marie and Rebecca Seifert, Camden and Colin Dumont; many nieces and nephews. She also is survived by one living sister-in-law, Nellie Knox of Presque Isle, whom she looked upon as a sister. She was predeceased by three brothers, Timothy, Angus and James Brasslett, all of Bradford; seven sisters, Bell Berube of Presque Isle, Gertrude Amero of Milo and Connecticut, Esther Carle of Brownville Junction, Claudia Van Dyne of Falmouth, Cecile Delaite of Milo, Theresa Tibbetts of Lincoln and Olive Moulton of Bradford.
Relatives and friends are invited to call 9-10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John Catholic Church, 207 York St., Bangor. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share memories, conversation and refreshments after the interment at the Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor.
