PORTLAND, Maine — The organization spearheading the campaign in support of Maine’s gay marriage referendum says the pop-rock band fun. will donate proceeds from a Halloween concert to its cause.

Mainers United for Marriage says the New York-based band is playing in Portland on Oct. 31 following a 16-country European tour.

Mainers United campaign manager Matt McTighe says the concert six days before the Nov. 6 election will excite supporters and remind voters what’s at stake when they vote on a ballot question asking if they want to allow same-sex couples to marry.

The band’s first hit, “We are Young,” reached No. 1 on the U.S Billboard Hot 100 chart. Its second hit, “Some Nights,” also cracked the Top 10 on the chart.

  1. Calling it marriage does not make it marriage. Marriage has always been a covenant between a man and a woman which is by its nature ordered toward the procreation and education of children and the unity and wellbeing of the spouses.

The promoters of same-sex “marriage” propose something entirely different. They propose the union between two men or two women. This denies the self-evident biological, physiological, and psychological differences between men and women which find their complementarity in marriage. It also denies the specific primary purpose of marriage: the perpetuation of the human race and the raising of children.

    1. Marriage requires no procreation, and is man-made, not “natural”.

Marriage is a civil contract between citizens. Nothing more, nothing less.

      1. Sorry but marriage was a religious union long before a civil one. It’s funny that the Gay agenda want’s to deny my religious and moral beliefs but believes in marriage a Judeo-Christian precept.

        1. And man worshiped Zeus, Ra, and Vishnu long before your religion was invented. And guess what? They all had marriage too! Christians making claim to marriage ignore vast chunks of human history.

In our nation, marriage is a civil contract that requires no religious trappings whatsoever. Atheists wed all the time… all it takes is a judge, JP, or even a notary. That’s it. No mythology necessary.

No one is denying your moral or religious beliefs: you are free to keep them. Just as the KKKlan exists and maintains it’s own view of “morality”, you’re free to do so yourself. No one can take it away from you.

        2. And we already have access to religious marriage— gay people have marriage ceremonies in every state in this nation, and have for decades.

At issue is the civil marriage license, which is 100% a government function.

And how exactly are we denying your beliefs by getting married? What does it matter to how you live your life?

        3. I know it’s an unusual concept to think of two men being married to each other, but the love that a couple of men have for each other can be as strong as the love that a man might have for a woman.  I know that marriage has meant “a man and a woman” for a very long time, but for a very long time, the idea of a gay man wanting to settle down long-term with another man was alien.  In fact, up until recently, many gay people had no interest in anything like marriage.

But it’s a different time now and more gay people are waking up to the notion that settling down with one person is pretty nice.  And like with any couple that wants to spend the rest of their lives together, the protections and rights that come with marriage are sometimes necessary.  Yes, there are things called civil unions and domestic partnerships, but they are sorely lacking in rights and protections.  Why should a separate legal condition be created when there is already a legal contract that takes care of everything?  And the word “marriage” means, to many, a lifetime commitment of love.  The terms “civil union” and “domestic partnership” doesn’t have that same cache.

        4. How does the “gay agenda” deny you your right to religious and moral beliefs? Are you going to run out and leave your spouse to marry someone of the same sex? If not then this change will not affect you at all. Also, if it passes you can still feel any way you like about Teh_Gay. No one will stop you. So I honestly don’t know what you’re worried about.  Your “straight agenda” is trying to keep people from rights that everyone one else has. What right are you willing to give up so that gays can’t marry; do you have an offer on the table? Yeah. Didn’t think so.

If your marriage does suffer because gays are allowed to marry, perhaps it is due to the status of your marriage, and not the satus of anyone elses marriage.

    2. I know it’s a difficult concept to understand, but words have different meanings in different contexts. It’s possible for those meanings to co-exist at the same time without causing the planet to explode — crazy, right? It’s kind of like walking and talking at the same time.

      1. As far as teaching kids to hate , believe what you want because if a million people
said they did not hate gays but were just against marriage, passed a lie
detector test , you would still say it was teaching hate.

        1. Where are these tests being done. I’d like Michael Heath, Paul Madore, and everyone one else on the Christian right to take it up to and including Bob Emrich. I actually have a special Ungandan question I would like answered.
But you know, I kind of doubt they ever would. Since the heart knows the truth the mouth dare not speak.

          1. I would guess call your local police department and ask where
but that costs so you probably won’t get many players.
I don’t feel all warm and fuzzy over preachers these days or should I say
alleged preachers, I wouldn’t ask them much of anything but that’s
            me and not advice

    3. Really? Then why is there no mention of having children together in the traditional wedding vows?

The truth is that we are seeking civil marriage, which conveys over 1,100 benefits and privileges by our government. It’s simply wrong for our government to discriminate against same-sex couples who are building lives together and raising children together here in Maine.

As for “the perpetuation of the human race”— you can’t seriously be claiming that allowing gay marriage would result in our species becoming extinct, are you?

      1. Ah, but in the Catholic wedding ceremony, there is a mention of having children.  Both partners are admonished to not deny the other of having children.  And the vow to not do that.

    4. blah…blah…blah…blah….times change.  Please let me live my life the way I would like and not according to your god…kind of egotistical to think that the entire population should live by your religious tenants.  Civil Marriage is a license to marry that is granted by the state, and not by your church.
      Have a nice day

      1. But, Seth, don’t you understand?  Their religion is the only *true* religion!  You know how I know?  They told me it is!  After all, they are just trying to save you from eternal damnation.

(Honestly, I am forever amazed at how unaware of the world people are.  Blind faith really is, well, blind.  We will never change their minds.  The best we can hope for is for them to find some other scapegoat to which to hitch their wagon.  How about the evils of that communist game called soccer?  Only the “foreigners” play that ungodly game.  And, they have a “soccer agenda!”  They are trying to convert our young people away from our God-given football to that socialist game soccer.  They even use the name “football” to try to confuse us!  Yes, yes, the more I think about it, the more we should get them wound up about soccer.  Maybe then they will go away and leave us alone.)

I can hardly wait until November is here.  Maybe after SSM gets passed they will go into mourning for a decade or two.  Well, wishful thinking.

          1. Nice thought, but I doubt it.  Hunger & poverty do not get meat in the seats or up the donation plate contributions.  Like many organizations, you need to get people riled up for a cause.  This certainly is one.  I’m sure they have always been against gay marriage, but it does seem to be a bit of a “convenient” a drum to beat.  I guess they have rolled-over on the contraception issue and accepted that as a lost cause.  The “banned movie list” they used to have (can’t recall the name) is hardly mentioned these days.  I can’t imagine they really believe gay marriage is an actual threat to the RCC.  My guess is this is an item to help refill the coffers, get people back into the church, and divert attention away from the priest sex abuse cases and other church transgressions.

I don’t know what the RCC long-term game plan is, but from the outside looking in, I see dwindling membership, far fewer young families with lots of kids sitting in the pews, lots of gray haired people who are passing on, the closure of churches due to lack of funding, a significant drop in young men joining the priesthood, and young women becoming nuns.  It looks like GM & Chrysler in 2009.

I do not really have a dog in this fight so what they do is up to them as long as they are not causing problems for others.  I personally think it is a shame they are considering bulldozing the old church in Waterville which architecturally is both pleasing and historic.  As you probably heard, the old church is causing a loss on the books.  They plan to flatten the place and replace it with senior housing which, given the aging baby boomer population, should be a good income producer for many years to come.  Of course, this is all under the guise of “helping the elderly.”  Yes, well, it will do that but it also turns a financial loss into an income producer, very conveniently.  Well, their building, their land, they can do as the please.  Still, sad to see the old building fall just for 30 pieces of silver.
