PORTLAND, Maine — A Topsham man was sentenced Friday in U.S. District court to four years and nine months in federal prison on gun charges.
Dennis Grenier, 33, also was sentenced to three years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge Nancy Torresen.
He was indicted in March by a federal grand jury in Portland. Grenier pleaded guilty May 30 to being a felon in possession of a firearm and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
By pleading guilty, Grenier admitted that he sold a gun with an obliterated serial number in March 2011 to an undercover ATF agent. Grenier was forbidden to possess guns because of a 2000 conviction in Kennebec County Superior Court for criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.
He faced up to 10 years in prison on the possession charge and up to five years in prison on the obliterated serial charge. Both charges carried a potential fine of up to $250,000. Under the prevailing federal sentencing guidelines, Grenier faced between four years and nine months and five years and 11 months in prison.

Sounds like Mr. Grenier really screwed up. Messing with the serial numbers is a real big No-No on firearms. But on the otherhand, knowingly selling them to illegal buyers who you know are criminal don’t seem to be too big a deal………just ask Eric Holder and Obama. OH! That’s right, they’ve got “executive privilege” to hide behind.
Fast and furious is small change compared to Holder’s role in the OKC bomb cover up.
Glad to hear people have not forgotten about the lives that were lost in Oklahoma. It’s a tragedy what happened there, especially all of the children that died who were in the daycare inside the building at the time. I know the media reported of a possible John Doe #2 for a while, but ultimately Timothy McVeigh was the one who took all of the blame in the authorized account of how things went down. Just recently a documentary was made that takes a closer look at what happened and the documentary has been well received at a number of film festivals. If anyone wants to watch a trailer or find out more about it they can check out the films website, http://www.anoblelie.com.
whoops!
It tells nothing of the Grenier being in the black market gun trade… So this is his first gun sale. first offence.. and it was to a Officer of the law…
I wonder who approched whom first.
felon in possession of a firearm. Even if it WAS his first gun sale (oh, sure!), he was breaking federal law just by having the gun.
When did he come into possession of the firearm?
You mean typical Democrat? Small town entrepreneur regardless of laws? Weed, guns anything to make a buck in “this economy” should be legal right?
Ok so he wanted to sell a gun..So,was he so stupid to put on a web site or what?I don’t know how to word this right but how is it the cops are right there when this type of thing goes on? Don’t say they are smart cause 90% of the time they are tipped off..
Smart.
I wish there were more facts about this case. Did Grenier have a gun for sale??? Did a under cover policeman befriend Grenier and ask him if he knew where he could get a gun, then Greniers ego kicked in and said yes I could find you what you want… how did it work.. Did he make a plea agreement under duress so as not to get the maxium thus no trial revealing evidence.. Was Grenier advertizing a gun for sale without serial numbers… If so that was foolish.. Story was to short
