HOLDEN, Maine — A man living in an apartment on the Clark Hill Road was charged Sunday with breaking into his landlord’s home several times over the last month to steal valuables he had pawned for money to feed his drug habit, Holden police Sgt. Gene Fizell said Monday.
Maxwell Stein, 21, was arrested and charged with four counts of felony burglary and four counts of felony theft, which could send him to prison for up to five years for each count, if convicted.
“The [landlords] noticed things moved on the bureau and jewelry missing,” Fizell said. “The approximate value is in excess of $50,000 in cash, jewelry and other valuables.”
Brianna Stein, 21, Maxwell Stein’s wife, was charged with receiving stolen property in the break-ins, after she “admitted she had taken some of the valuables and jewelry to local pawn shops and pawned them,” Fizell said.
“Based upon their statements, it appears he was using [the money] to support his drug habits, which he admits he needs help with,” the sergeant said. He did not go into detail about what type of drugs Stein is using.
A few of the stolen items have been recovered.
“There has been some local recovery at the expense of the local pawn shops,” Fizell said. “Some of the pieces had sentimental value, as well as monetary value” and are still missing.

Nice guy…..Pillar of the community thats for sure.
He’ll get six months in jail and three years probation. And everyone will feel sorry for him because he knows he needs help with his drug problem, but there will be no help for his landlord.
Exactly, all the “help” in the world for the scum, and none for the victims. What sucks is you can only help someone who is truly willing to help themselves.
Don’t forget the free “drug rehab” program he will be “entitled to” . Can’t anyone just help themselves anymore? Such dependent whinny addicted lazy entitled bunch.
Oh No! Drugs are the cause of crime….Oh how can that be??? Tell me it’s not so!
Like I have said before, and all these people are saing here, the punishment isnt harsh enough.
We coddle the people who CHOOSE not to help them selves.
He is a thief no matter how you say it. He stold what someone else worked for.
Off with his arm. Then we will all see him coming in the next six months when he is free amonst us again taking what isnt his.
Wait. Where are all of the “Drugs are a victimless crime!” commentators? Huh. Go figure.
Maybe if he wants help with his addiction, time he spends in rehab can be applied towards his sentence. One could hope the landlord has insurance for the items that are lost, and that this perp will have to pay restitution as part of his sentence.
