WILLISTON, Vt. — General Dynamics is laying off about 50 employees in Vermont and 30 in Maine.

Company communications director Karl Johnson attributes the layoffs to the company completing its work on special armor for military vehicles and a decline in demand for guns.

He says the cuts will be to both hourly and salaried employees in administrative, engineering, management and manufacturing support.

The layoffs will be in Williston and in Saco, Maine.

Johnson says the workers were notified Monday and will receive a severance package. He says two employees also will be laid off at the company’s headquarters in Charlotte, N.C.

  1. Another 30 hard working people needing jobs. Another 30 families being hit hard before the upcoming holiday season. These are the Americans that the GOP would blame for their economic loss, although it happened through no fault of their own.

    1. “Karl Johnson attributes the layoffs to the company completing its work
on special armor for military vehicles and a decline in demand for guns”  is listed as a cause of the layoffs. Defense cuts by the left is more likely the cause than anything the Republicans are doing.

      1. Cuts caused by GOP extortion on the debt ceiling–but I’m glad you recognize the importance of government spending for fueling the economy.

    2. Those people my not be hired because an soon as the company has work those people would leave that job an companies don’t like that

  2. We need government jobs provided by stimulus, done through taxing the rich.

Another heartbreaker:  Recently the LePage admin allowed the nursing home in Calais to shut down and move operations to Ellsworth, all for profit.  92 jobs were lost in Calais, a very poor rural town.  92.

    Thanks, LePage.

        1. Yeah…I am SURE he believes that. Why is it
when Romney cracks a joke the libbers go bonkers
but when Obama lies and covers up you people can’t
stop covering up for him? I would much rather have
Romney saying that than Obama calling a terrorist
attack and deaths a “bump in the road”. I would much
rather Romney saying that than the pres blowing off
meetings with world leaders to appear on the View and
to have a big fund raiser with his singing pals. If Bush
said or done that you would be screaming to impeach him.
What a bunch of hypocrites. Wait, Obama will give you
more food stamps and the govt will spend a ton more to
          create……NOTHING.

    2. Spoken like a true myopic who has no clue. Since when does the government (or Lepage) have the legal right to force a private business (not a state run entity) that is losing money to stay open?

“More government jobs provided by stimulus, done thru taxing the rich”.

      That is laughable!

The last thing we need is another failed stimulus plan that caters to the NEA and other unions. People all over this country are fed up with increasing property taxes fueled by hefty public employees salaries, health care packages and pensions. They are voting down school and municipal budgets. So what does Obama do? He uses a stimulus package to keep them on the payroll against the wishes of taxpayers who voted to trim bloated budgets that fuel property tax increases.

  3. Sorry but I can’t see this as anything other than good news.  I’m glad to see the US finally slowing down it’s military machine.

  4. When people demand governmental spending cuts, that’s what happens. Military contracting is the biggest “stimulus” of all and it’s aided and abetted by both political  parties, sometimes against the wishes of the Pentagon.

  5. Contracts ending and employees looking for work is an everyday occurance when supporting the DOD.  The difference this year is the lack of follow-on contracts due to sequestration.  My team is letting three people go at the end of Oct when our project is scaled back with little chance they will be moved to something new.  Most likely the GD employees knew this was coming or that it could happen for a long time.  Doesnt make it any easier but at least you can plan for it to some extent.
A good portion of defense workers are former military and conservative, so not a big surprise that many are planning to vote for Romney, who BTW promised to protect/increase the Pentagon’s budget.

  6. General Dynamics is known for hiring and firing….just look at Bath Iron Works (they are part of the same company)….this is not the fault of the left or the right. Once they are done with a project they lay off many of the people that were hired to complete it…and when they begin a new one they will hire again.
