Just five high school football teams statewide remain undefeated entering Week 7 of the season after Messalonskee of Oakland, John Bapst of Bangor, Leavitt of Turner Center, Maranacook of Readfield and Traip Academy of Kittery all suffered their first losses during Week 6.
Three of the surviving unbeatens are in Class A — two-time defending state champion Cheverus of Portland, Thornton Academy of Saco and defending Eastern Maine champion Lawrence of Fairfield — but that trio will be pared by at least one Saturday when Cheverus plays at Thornton Academy with a chance to tie the Class A state record for consecutive victories.
Coach John Wolfgram’s Cheverus team has 30 straight wins since it fell to Windham in the 2009 Western A title game, and the Class A state record is 31 set by South Portland between 1995 and 1997 — a team also coached by Wolfgram.
Lawrence, meanwhile, faces its toughest test of the season to date Friday night when the Bulldogs host high-scoring Cony of Augusta, which is 5-1 and riding a five-game winning streak.
The other undefeated teams are Mt. Blue of Farmington and Foxcroft Academy. Mt. Blue defeated three-time Pine Tree Conference Class B champion Leavitt 20-12 last weekend, sending the Hornets of Turner Center to their first loss against Eastern Maine competition since 2008 — a streak of 38 games.
Foxcroft, meanwhile, continued to dominate the LTC Class C ranks, pulling away in the second half Saturday night for a 40-0 victory over John Bapst — the Ponies’ third consecutive shutout victory over an undefeated opponent after earlier wins over Stearns of Millinocket and Orono.
The Ponies’ first-team defense has yet to allow a point this fall, and overall coach Danny White’s club has outscored its opposition 322-8 with regular-season games remaining Friday night at 4-2 Bucksport and in Week 8 at home against 2-4 Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln.
While there are just five unbeaten teams, 18 schools — nearly one-quarter of all the state’s 76 varsity programs — will take a 5-1 record into this weekend’s action.
That includes a logjam of six schools — Maranacook, Dirigo of Dixfield, Winslow, Oak Hill of Wales, Old Orchard Beach and Traip Academy — atop the Western Maine Class C standings, as well as four Western B schools in Westbrook, Wells, Marshwood of South Berwick and Greely of Cumberland Center and Western A contender Scarborough.
Eastern Maine schools at 5-1 are Brunswick, Cony and Messalonskee of Oakland in Class A, Leavitt and Hampden Academy in Class B and John Bapst and Orono in Class C.

Isn’t it interesting that WLBZ2 and it’s controlling “Mothership” channel from Portland – WCHS6, only have Foxcroft Academy rated as the 9th best team in Maine. It is this type of Portland bias that makes folks in Eastern Maine sick. Sure they are Class C, but Foxcroft is rewriting every record in HS football that exists. I would certainly love to see Cheverus or any other “Portland” team meet Foxcroft Academy on a neutral field – maybe in Waterville. Of Course, even if Foxcroft won that game, WCHS 6 would find a way to name a Portland team as better. TOTAL lack of respect.
