WATERBORO, Maine — An Iowa man who allegedly broke into four York County homes seeking food and shelter instead received a roof and a bed in jail, according to police.

Chance Baker, 18, of Shenandoah, Iowa., is no stranger to New England law enforcement, according to Major Bill King.

Police dealt with him in August when Baker stole a car in the York County town of Parsonfield and tried to drive back to the Midwest, but a Massachusetts state trooper arrested him and returned him to Maine to face charges of vehicle theft.

On Saturday, Baker was in trouble again when as deputies discovered him at a residence on Highpoint Circle in Waterboro, according to King. Baker reportedly admitted to officers he did not have permission to be there.

A subsequent investigation by Deputies Corey Sweatt and Stan Moore determined Baker had broken into three other houses in the area in a search for food and shelter, King said. The owners were quickly notified.

Baker was booked into the York County Jail on a charge of burglary, a Class B felony, King said. He has since been released on $5,000 bail.

If convicted, Baker faces up to 10 years in prisonl on the burglary charge.

  1. He got exactly what he wanted 3 hots a cot and cable tv.  Sounds like a he knew exactly what he was doing.

  2. He broke into homes because he was seeking shelter and food? I am not buying it because there are homeless shelters and food banks if that was his situation. More likely, he was seeking items he could steal and sell.   Well, now he will have shelter and food in jail.

  3. He could find someone with 5000.00 to bail him out of jail, but he couldn’t find directions to a homeless shelter and a meal at McDonalds?? He will probably break into a few more homes before he goes to court and then the judge will give him a 2 year sentence with all but 90 days suspended.

  4. I think the 5,000 was because of the stolen vehicle during the first incident.  The second time they should of just bought him a dang bus ticket and a couple sandwiches and sent him west.  Would save us money.
