WESTMINSTER, Colo. — A body found in a suburban Denver park was identified Friday as that of a missing 10-year-old girl, as anxious parents kept close watch over their children because of the potential presence of a predator in their midst, authorities said.
The body of Jessica Ridgeway was found Wednesday about 7 miles southwest of her home. Authorities said it was not intact, and DNA was used to identify her.
“Our focus has changed from the search for Jessica to a mission of justice for Jessica,” said Westminster Police Chief Lee Birk.
“All our efforts now are in search of her abductor,” he said. “We recognize there is a predator at large in our community.”
Jessica began a short walk from her home to Witt Elementary School on the morning of Oct. 5 but never arrived. A massive search by hundreds of law enforcement officers did not start until hours later because Jessica’s mother works nights and slept through a call from school officials saying Jessica wasn’t there.
The FBI has warned residents that she may have been abducted by someone they know and is asking them to be alert for people they know who might have suddenly changed their appearance or uncharacteristically missed work or appointments.
“It could be your boss, it could be your friend, and ultimately it could be your family member,” FBI spokesman Dave Joly said previously. “We suspect someone in the community knows this individual.”
Jim Yacone, FBI special agent in charge of the Denver division, said investigators would continue neighborhood searches. The U.S. Marshals Service, immigration officials and state Department of Corrections have been reviewing registered sex offenders in the area, he said, without elaborating.
Investigators have received more than 1,500 tips from the public, roughly 800 of which have been covered, Yacone said. Authorities also have searched more than 500 homes and more than 1,000 vehicles but still need the public’s help.
“We want you to look for changes of habits, patterns, peculiar absences of those around you and report it to law enforcement,” he said.
Signs of the tragedy have been everywhere in Jessica’s neighborhood of modest, two-story homes with single-car garages.
During the past week, officers have searched homes and yards. They kept guard at crosswalks and photographed cars entering the neighborhood. Mailboxes and trees were encircled by ribbons in Jessica’s favorite color, purple.
“I don’t feel safe for my daughter anymore, anywhere,” said Stacey Oppie, who lives in the neighborhood.
Two months ago, Oppie started letting her daughter play unsupervised with a friend at the park that Jessica customarily passed on her way to school. She doesn’t intend to do that anymore.
“We’re all a little bit on alert, but it’s not fear. We’re angry because this is a good neighborhood,” Oppie said.
Jessica’s disappearance hit close to home for Chelsea Bozsak, a senior at nearby Standley Lake High School, where Jessica’s cousin attends classes. Students there wore purple Friday in support of Jessica’s family.
“It’s so scary because you never think something like this could happen in your community,” Bozsak said.
Courtney Sullivan, also a senior at Standley Lake, said her father spoke to her and her younger brother about Jessica’s disappearance.
“He’s definitely talked to us about being more careful about our surroundings. You could see why,” said Sullivan, a cross-country runner who often uses neighborhood streets. “I’m running in places where there’s lights, busy roads, where I can get to someplace if I need to.”
Retired FBI behavioral analyst Clinton Van Zandt told The Associated Press that tip-offs about the suspect could include someone suddenly growing a beard, getting a new haircut or other changes in appearance. Other clues might be out-of-character behavior, Van Zandt said.
Police have said they don’t suspect Jessica’s parents, Sarah Ridgeway, who lives with Jessica in Westminster, and Jeremiah Bryant, of Missouri.
The only substantive clue police have disclosed was the discovery of her backpack and water bottle in Superior, about six miles northwest of her home, two days after she disappeared. Police won’t discuss what was found in the bag or test results involving it.
Law-enforcement leaders said they would not disclose further information publicly, saying it would either jeopardize or distract from the investigation.
“The commitment of the task force of investigators in this case will not waver, and our commitment and resolve to seek justice on behalf of Jessica will only grow stronger,” Yacone said.

May she Rest in Peace! The person who did this to you WILL be caught! Thoughts are with your family little one!
Rest in peace little one. You deserved so much better.
I am so sorry that the body found was the missing child. But at least now her family knows what happened. May she rest in peace, and may the perpetrator not feel any peace, knowing that it is a matter of time before he or she is brought to justice.
So sad to hear this young life was taken. I hope the one responsible will face harsh justice for killing her. RIP Jessica Ridgeway. Your life was wrongly taken away and you will be avenged.
May the poor little girl rest in peace,it rips my heart thinking what she must have gone thru, but at least the family can get some closure hopfully the one or ones responsibile will be brought to justice ,Now I ll keep praying for LittleAlya
I am so sorry for this family. The United States of America needs to start killing these people that are caught. We are seeing more and more of this every day. If the culprets knew if they got caught they would be killed,I bet they would think twice.
what the heck is the matter with people….for god sakes she was just a little girl going to school….why…just dont get why
Even when they catch the animal who did this Justice will not be served because of bleeding heart liberals who don’t believe in the death sentence! They spend there time and our hard earned tax dollars defending these scum, looking for more ways to protect them and less for the victim and there families! Let the punishment fit the crime, make it quick and decisive so we can save the hundreds of millions of tax dollars wasted every year. I do not believe in rehabilitation for proven child molesters, rapist, drug dealers and cold blooded murderers etc. If it were my child, I would not put my faith in our failed judicial system!
The death penalty doesn’t save any money. It wastes money. Unless you’d like to pass a law saying that people sentenced to death can never appeal (no matter that they might be innocent), there will be multiple appeals. These are expensive.
Here’s some data from Califnoria, as one example. Assessment of Costs by Judge Arthur Alarcon and Prof. Paula Mitchell (2011, updated 2012):
The authors concluded that the cost of the death penalty in California has totaled over $4 billion since 1978:
$1.94 billion–Pre-Trial and Trial Costs
$925 million–Automatic Appeals and State Habeas Corpus Petitions
$775 million–Federal Habeas Corpus Appeals
$1 billion–Costs of Incarceration
The authors calculated that, if the Governor commuted the sentences of those remaining on death row to life without parole, it would result in an immediate savings of $170 million per year, with a savings of $5 billion over the next 20 years.
Multiple other states have conducted similar studies: http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/costs-death-penalty.
For one example, Kansas–In its review of death penalty expenses, the State of Kansas concluded that capital cases are 70% more expensive than comparable non-death penalty cases. The study counted death penalty case costs through to execution and found that the median death penalty case costs $1.26 million. Non-death penalty cases were counted through to the end of incarceration and were found to have a median cost of $740,000.
I know that someone can be pushed into a situation that can cause a temporary state of insanity and there may be mitigating circumstances to consider but I firmly believe that if there is absolutely no doubt about a persons guilt in a violent crime whether it be a rapist, child molester, cold blooded murderer or a drug dealer etc. there should be no plea bargaining, rehabilitation, appeals or lengthy trial.
The problem is that hundreds of people who are convicted, with the presumption that there is no reasonable doubt of their innocence, later (sometimes decades later) turn out to be innocent. Here’s a list of incarcerated people who were proved innocent by The Innocence Project: http://www.innocenceproject.org/know/Browse-Profiles.php
The death penalty would have killed all these innocent people.
Causes of wrongful conviction include eyewitness misidentification; unvalidated or improper forensics; forensic science misconduct; government misconduct; false confessions/admissions; informants; and poor attorney practices.
With the technology today there is little chance of making the same mistake and I don’t believe in executing someone who has been imprisoned on circumstantial evidence which I know happens. I am talking about known violent criminals where DNA evidence is present, who have pleaded guilty or who have been caught in the act. I also don’t believe in providing criminals with free education, health & dental care or providing them with luxuries, computers, basket ball courts and elaborate weight lifting and exorcise equipment. I believe prison should mean hard labor and no luxuries! In this country because of beading heart liberals crime does pay! Look at the number of repeat offenders who have been released. Charles Manson was a prime candidate for lethal injection but violent criminals like him have more consideration and rights than the victims!
Rest in Peace Jessica, we will all pray for you and your family that they might find this person real soon.
When this person is caught, they need the death penalty, we need to rid the earth of this gene pool!
Of course, that’s assuming they catch the right person. You’d be surprised how often innocent people get railroaded into false confessions, especially if they’re young, borderline mentally retarded, or both. Numerous people are being exhonerated thanks to the Innocence Project. Its leaders note,
“In about 25% of DNA exoneration cases, innocent defendants made incriminating statements, delivered outright confessions or pled guilty. These cases show that confessions are not always prompted by internal knowledge or actual guilt, but are sometimes motivated by external influences.”
“•Some false confessions can be explained by the mental state of the confessor. •Confessions obtained from juveniles are often unreliable – children can be easy to manipulate and are not always fully aware of their situation. Children and adults both are often convinced that that they can “go home” as soon as they admit guilt. •People with mental disabilities have often falsely confessed because they are tempted to accommodate and agree with authority figures. Further, many law enforcement interrogators are not given any special training on questioning suspects with mental disabilities. An impaired mental state due to mental illness, drugs or alcohol may also elicit false admissions of guilt. •Mentally capable adults also give false confessions due to a variety of factors like the length of interrogation, exhaustion or a belief that they can be released after confessing and prove their innocence later.

Why do people think something like this can’t happen in their community? Perverts and murderers don’t all live in the same town.
I wish there was a solution. First no matter what punishment you give for the crime, it will still happen.
Criminals are not usually known for long term thinking, nor considering possible consequences of their actions. They tend to be impulsive and I want so I do type of people. People make the mistake of thinking that a criminal would think like themselves, but if that were true, no person would be a criminal in the first place.
Most criminals are irrational, impulsive, often ignorant, poorly educated, and usually don’t get along with other people. Anything that could have been done to change them, should have been done before they got out of the first three grades of grade school. After that they just repeat their actions over and over again, with little chance of most of them changing.
We have used many different kinds of punishments, different lengths of sentences, and have had no affect whatsoever on crime. Prisons themselves are just universities of crime.
The only thing that might help is for us to pay attention, keep ourselves informed of the people around us, work with family and neighbors, work with the police, and not shirk our duty our duty as jurors, and carefully raise and train our own children and keep track of them and their friends and what they are up to, what they are listening too, what they are watch, be it movies, computer games, and whom they are in contact with. Parenting is a full time job.
That is why we need to start killing those type people.
if i ever have children – like my dad said to me once – if someone does something like that to them…and i ever get a hold of them…i will pursue you, i will find you. and i will kill you.
Your dad thinks in the correct way.
This is so sad, my heart goes out to her family, i hope they find the B@$!@&$ and make him pay!!
I just can’t imagine what this little girl may of had to go through her last hours before her death . I really hope this monster is caught before another child gets taken. My prayers will be with your family Jessica, that God will help them realize you will always be with them ,as an angel on their shoulder . RIP Jessica .
I hope surrounding communities will be vigilant too. The killer knows now people are keeping a close eye on their children and he may wait for things to cool off. I hope this never happens to another child.
I don’t want to know what they mean by her body was “not intact,” I just hope she wasn’t alive when it happened.
too bad “Dexter” wasn’t real,a serial killer who murdered those who deserved killing
the father will be blamed for sure
