AUGUSTA, Maine — An Augusta pharmacy was evacuated after a man who demanded prescription drugs barricaded himself inside the store’s bathroom and claimed he had explosive chemicals.

Police say 19-year-old Dylan Karczewski went to the Rite Aid at about 5 p.m. Tuesday and demanded drugs.

After he was given the prescription medication, he ran to the bathroom and locked himself inside.

Police say officers evacuated the store as a precaution, then broke into the bathroom and took the suspect into custody about 5:30 p.m. There was no evidence Karczewski possessed any explosive chemicals. Police did find some of the drugs allegedly stolen.

He was charged with theft and robbery. No one was hurt.

  1. I call this behavior “the great white slide”. People just do not care anymore, absolutely no pride. disgusting…

  2. Outstanding job Augusta P.D.!!  Treating this fool as an active shooter and advancing on him without delay, and taking him into custody despite being holed up, within 30 minutes of the robbery is to be commended by everybody.

  3. Locking himself in the bathroom was obviously because he could not wait to take the drugs he had just stolen.

  4. His capture was self-inflicted, almost as good as the trap door or the automated glass bulletproof windows that some have suggested to curtail this nonsense. This is analogous to robbing a bank teller and then depositing the stolen money in the bank’s ATM on the premises.
