U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, a Democrat, better represents the values of a majority of Maine’s 1st Congressional District’s voters than does her challenger, Republican Jon Courtney. For that reason, we endorse her for a third term.

In 2008, Pingree defeated Republican Charlie Summers for the right to succeed 1st District U.S. Rep. Tom Allen, who gave up his seat to run for the U.S. Senate. Since then, she has balanced speaking out for progressive social policies with able constituent service.

An example of the latter was seen this summer, when Pingree persuaded cruise ship companies with vessels that dock in Maine to buy thousands of pounds of lobsters at a time when an excess supply of the crustaceans drove prices dangerously low. She recognized a problem and acted swiftly to address it.

As a state legislator and as a member of Congress, Pingree has shown that taking strong positions in support of environmental and consumer protection laws can benefit the interests of Maine’s small businesses.

While Maine Senate majority leader from 1997 to 2000, Pingree played a key role in expanding the focus and success of the Land for Maine’s Future conservation program. A February 2012 study by The Trust for Public Land calculates an $11 return to the Maine economy for every dollar invested in Land for Maine’s Future projects.

Serving on the House Committee on Agriculture, she’s continued to argue persuasively for the economic value of preserving open spaces and traditional land-based businesses. Her advocacy for small farmers during bipartisan negotiations on a new farm bill appropriately attempts to achieve fairness for Maine farmers and consumers against the interests of powerful agricultural conglomerates.

Despite her outspoken opposition to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Pingree has represented the interests of the district’s defense contractors — notably Bath Iron Works and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard — effectively as a member of the House Committee on Armed Services. Her advocacy for a stronger stance against sexual assault in the military is admirable, and her anti-war sentiments have not prevented her from promoting policy changes that address the changing needs of veterans returning from multiple tours of duty.

Courtney, the current Maine Senate majority leader, has run a positive campaign based on what he calls “Main Street values.” He’s shown personal skills that are assets in achieving consensus, but when pressed for specifics about how he would apply those attributes in Congress, Courtney has rarely deviated from standard Republican Party talking points on education, health care, Social Security, taxes and the economy.

Likewise, Courtney’s stances on reproductive rights and same-sex marriage don’t align with those held by what polls and past elections indicate to be a significant majority of 1st District voters. While fixing a dysfunctional federal government so that it no longer drags down the nation’s economy represents the top priority for the next Congress, the ongoing tendency for elected officials to interfere with what should be private decisions made by private citizens elevates the importance of candidates’ positions on abortion, marriage and other social issues.

Courtney’s campaign touts his ability to find common ground with lawmakers across the aisle as a way to fix a “broken” Congress. First, he would have to find common ground with his constituents on many key issues.

Pingree’s record on social issues, spending priorities and the role of government already reflects consensus with voters in southern Maine, which makes her the best choice this year to represent the 1st Congressional District.

  1. Are you dreaming?  Mr. Pingree just bought your rival the Portland Press Herald so you must be looking to cash out on the same limo liberal taxpayer funded bail-out they did.   Disgusting ….Sussman got $200 million out of the bailout and the taxpayers are again put out to dry by the obummer administration.  So how in the world can you think a “jet-flying, Caribbean living, socialist from Minnesota has anyway of representing Mainers Values is outright deception / lies.    Unbelievable the depths to which liberals will stoop!

    1. Then why is she going to win with 60% percent of the vote?  Those will be Mainers voting for her….or do people from Portland not count?

      1.  Porkland and it’s welfare, food stamp, homosexual community will certainly support someone who will continue the graft……..so no Porkland doesn’t count as Maine since the vast majority are dependent loser liberals transplanted for more pork from the Balducci years.   By the way you will be extremely disappointed when she doesn’t even get 60% of Porkland……LOL

        1. Thank you for bringing some classiness into the discussion..  Thank you for your thoughtful, high-minded and intellectually astute comments.  I feel like I learned something, I really do.  Our political discourse is sadly lacking enough measured, insightful commentary such as yours.  I commend you, sir.
I mean, Porkland instead of Portland, wow…..that’s like Mark Twain level satire…..Socrates even.  Fantastic stuff.  Please keep it up, for the good of us all.

          1.  Glad you enjoyed it……..too bad you didn’t get any of the messages.   Chellie Pingree is the worst example of “do what I say not as I do”.  The limo liberal has no concern for Maine’s people and will say whatever it takes to retain her grasp of the money-tree in DC.  (Certainly has been useful for her Wall Street Billionaire husband!)  Just the fact of her blind obedience to Nancy Pelosi is enough to convince any Mainer that she has national ambitions not New England……..Fools can’t see the trees from the forest and Pingree is a rotted out old trunk!

          2.  Really………………….I didn’t know Courtney had a billionaire spouse who own the Press Herald, got 200 million in bailout money and has a private jet to go to the house in the Caribbean…. the dry cleaning business is that good………Pingree is an out of touch 1%er liberal with no concerns here in Maine.  Courtney lives in Sanford is a small business owner and grew up here……..BIG difference!

          3.  Opposing deceit and hypocrisy is anything but whining.  But just like marriage, liberals need to redefine words to get their agenda accomplished.  By the way you are “left” not “right”  going to be hard to redefine those two opposite words.

          4. Hate to brake you bubble but marriage has been refined many times over.what we have for marriage today is very young . Do you know that gays were married during roman time ?

          5.  Yep and look what happened to their society….(dark ages)………..those who don’t remember history are doomed to repeat it.  Since the whole moral fabric of Rome (just like the other past civilizations) became corrupt from “progressive thinking” the results were predictable.

          6. Sense you know history you know that the earth as we know it now will end when the ice age come back so who will you blame it on the gays ? Yes an you know that america is becoming corrupt every day by greedy people did the gays cause this ?

          7. can you prove that gays did not marry during roman time ?? If you had done a search like i did you would of known this .

          8. Can you tell me the history of  marriage  ? what it was for for,,when did love play a part in marriage . How long ago was there true marriage,,

          9. So…I am assuming you are voting for the self-made Barack Obama as opposed to the legacy brat 1%er Willard Romney, right?

          10.  lol….self made….that’s a good one.  obama’s wealth is from where? oh yeah the book deal and community organizing……please if you believe he’s every worked a day in his life or built a business or even created a job, you need to get back on your medicine. Romney donated his inheritance and built businesses as a owner/manager taking risks……really are out of touch aren’t you.

          11. Let’s see here:  Barack Obama, met his father once, raised by a single mother who was on food stamps and died young of cancer, grows up to become President of the United States.
Mitt Romney:  Did not have to work in college because he could live off the dividends from the stock options his father gave him, donated his inheritance after he had gotten seed money from his father’s friends to start his company.  A company that made him rich by loading up other firms with debt and charging them millions in consulting fees for the privilege of telling them how to trim costs (fire people), so they could pay off the debt he saddled them with.
You are remarkably naive if you think Mitt Romney has ever been a job creator.  He is a succubus.

          12. Nice try but the sob story of obummer is ridiculous…….he was the very product of reverse- discrimination since he rode the tide of quotas all the way through college on our dime…….show me ONE picture of him working through college or ONE pay-stub. Verse Romney spending time on an unpaid mission job for 3 years. Romney and his family believe in morals and family values verse the product of a “free social programs” of the 60’s.  No comparision

        2. Your radica,l ridiculous, and utterly delusional comments are exactly why TeaPublicans are going to get CRUSHED at the polls all over the state in less than two weeks. So keep up your delusional blather. It only helps the progressive cause.

PS: It is so entertaining to see a TeaPublican corporatist toadie like yourself lament Pingree’s financially successful spouse. One more example of the utter HYPROCRISY that IS today’s delusional TeaPublican Party.

          1.  Please return to Connecticut, or California before you wither away from the fresh air, land and common sense which Maine once had in abundance…..don’t forget your “progressive cause” since we have no use for it here.   By the way the Minnesotan Pingree was vocally against corporate jets before she was for them (and got one) or did you forget all those earlier lies and deception? Biggest Loser- Sussman with all his connections and money he got stuck with that! Tell me that isn’t paying the Devil his due.

      2. She will win 60 percent of the vote because 60 percent of the people she represents lives in a glass bubble and see’s the world in a completely colored fashion. This state has turned more liberal percentage wise than most any state in the country over the last 50 years. It used to be a fairly conservative state. Lots of people have moved here and changed the demographics. Particularly in the southern half and Bangor. I get a kick out of the blind statements made about Maine people being independent thinkers,,,yeh right! She will have no trouble with her future.

      3. She will get those votes because most folks in her district are from away and know what’s best for us ( sarcasm ) !

  2. Erin, you could’ve saved a good deal of space – and generated more ad revenue – if you just said we support Pingree because she’s a dyed in the wool Democrat…or, more accurately, we at the BDN don’t support Jon Courtney because we believe he will be a rubber stamp for a Republican president.

Also, since when has a newspaper endorsed candidates outside its district? Jim Matheson is in a nailbiter in UT-4, what about him? If your argument is crossover due to circulation, what about the folks who travel between Maine and Massachusetts or Connecticut? You might want to comment on Chris Murphy in the CT Senate race!

I do look forward to seeing who the BDN supports in ME-2. After all, it would appear from a recent poll that the folks in the more rural of the two districts believe they would be better represented by a Republican. That said, I doubt the editorial board has the, ahem, cojones, to publish anything promoting conservatism and self-sufficiency.

    1. Here we go again with “self sufficiency” blather.  As if Republicans were all born in log cabins and built them too.  Republicans are for MASSIVE GOVERNMENT.  They never saw a tax subsidy for an oil company they didn’t adore.  Nor a no-bid contract for companies like Halliburton.  They want to spend TRILLIONS more on an already-bloated and totally socialist military which is half the federal discretionary budget, trillions more the Pentagon is not even asking for.  Republicans are deeply in love with THEIR Medicaid when THEIR elderly go into nursing homes.  They are deeply in love with THEIR Social Security checks.  They are deeply in love with THEIR Medicare benefits. THEIR infrastructure, THEIR public schools, THEIR public safety, THEIR kids’ public football and basketball teams, THEIR mail service, THEIR public parks of all sizes, the public colleges and universities that THEY and THEIR kids attend, and on and on and on.  Republicans CONSTANTLY use public services and programs of all kinds and rely on them very heavily.  So enough of the hypocritical baloney about “self sufficiency and conservatism.”  It is a reeking load of horse hockey.

  3. Fauxbama: considering Knox County votes in the First District, it would not be unusual for the BDN to comment.  However, you’re overall point is well taken.  If Olympia Snowe was running for the House today, I doubt even she would get the BDN’s endorsement.

  4. Why don’t you put all your endorsements out at once. Let me help you and save you some money and suspense.
All Democrats except Dill. BDN loves KIng
    SSM

  5. The BDN is in so many ways an excellent newspaper but they just walk off the cliff of credibility every time they get that Chris Matthews tingle for wealth redistribution.

  6. Chellie Pingree is the wife of a billionaire Wall Street 1% fat cat and commutes to Maine from Washington on a private jet. She does not represent us and anyone who believes she does is either an egregiously Democratic partisan or just plain thick.

      1. You assume that this person votes straight party line .  As long as there are folks who think like this , gridlock will continue to errode this country’s political process. I’m for term limits, minimum wage for our electees , SSI for their retirement and medical packages and the abolishment of lobbies. What do you think about term limits Charlie ?

      2.  Kind of odd that Romney made his. Who would you vote for on that basis? The trustfunder or job creator?

    1. So you are going to vote instead for the candidate that is from the PARTY of the 1%?  You mean you are a Republican who begrudges someone who has done well financially?  If so, you are obviously in the extreme minority of your party.  You mean you are not going to vote for Mitt Romney then, right?  And you are working very hard to defeat THAT “fatcat” who won’t show his tax records and who hides HIS multimillions in Bermuda and the Cayman Islands?  And, you are saying that just because her husband is wealthy he can’t be progressive?  Multimillionaire Mike Bloomberg is very moderate to progressive on MANY issues.  The Kennedys are politically progressive and they of course have multimillions.  George Soros is progressive and he has multimillions.  Michael Moore is progressive and he is a millionaire.  Hollywood is full of millionaire progressives.  And you are actually judging Chellie politically based on who she met, fell in love with, and married?  That is just foolish and sad logic.  Sheesh.

  7. Gotta love this 1%er Democrat who is so “in-touch” with the needs of the less fortunate. Please, give me a break!

  8. What a surprise?  The BDN endorses the liberal Democrat married to the billionaire!  Let me guess who’s next–Michaud in the 2nd district, King for the Senate, and Obama for President (since he has been so successful in his first term)??

  9. Is it any wonder why the BDN is doing poorly? Why is the BDN weighing in on the First District anyhow?

  10. What a glowing endorsement: “Pingree represents her constituents views on social issues and was helpful in asking cruise ships to buy lobsters”.

Instead of supporting a candidate who might help the lives of his constituents, it is best to support someone who panders to you. Very brave BDN.

  11. Whine,,,  whine   whine that all you people live for .. Like ive said before no matter who gets you you people will still whine . If you really want to do some thing have a law were you can recall them  an see how far you get with that ?

  12. This must be a “filler” story left over from the pingree owned potland press herald! The best thing Maine can do is throw out  pingree, the left wing moobatt, and elect Republican Jon Courtney!

  13. In a recent report Maine is the only state in the country to rank in the top 10 of three major areas of welfare: Maine ranks second in the nation in percent of households receiving cash assistance, third in the nation in percent of population enrolled in Medicaid and sixth in percent of households receiving food stamps.
This is the Progressive legacy of the “Pingree” years in the Maine Legislature.
Jon Courtney is more conservative and would help to bring a more “Centrist” balance to Congress with his reputation for bipartisanship and working to get things done.
How do you throw an extreme Progressive ingredient like Chellie into a legislature and expect a moderate, centrist, bipartisan, semi-functional government?
If BDN believes that Chellie better represents the views of the 1st district, then perhaps BDN would recommend a few politicians from Greece to give us some pointers.
Jon Courtney is the more centrist and reasonable choice.

    1.  Those stats are really really sad for the young workers among us….no wonder they are leaving as quickly as possible.  Stupidity and foolishness at the state level for the last 30 years has graduated to the current reps in Pingree and Michaud.  Time for a change as their leader proclaims.  And for God’s sakes don’t let the clone (Hannah Pingree) anywhere near the capital…..she’s proven her mother has taught her well how to scam and deceive!

  14. Go ahead–re-elect one of the principal moonbats who put us deep in the hole during her career in the Maine State Legislature.  She’ll be laughing from her private jet.  Don’t say you weren’t warned.

  15. Whine,,,  whine   whine that all you people live for .. Like ive said before no matter who gets you you people will still whine . If you really want to do some thing have a law were you can recall them  an see how far you get with that ?

  16. Chillie, Trustfunder, Pingree doesn’t represent Maine well at all. She’s a PFA who doesn’t understand Maine 10 miles north of Rt. 1. She belongs on her personal jet heading for someplace else.
