BANGOR, Maine — A local man who created a brief standoff with police early Friday morning on Dirigo Drive had his bail set at $10,000 cash with several conditions at his first court appearance Monday afternoon.
The prosecution requested $25,000 cash bail and defendant Jared Ross, 29, requested $500 through his defense attorney via video feed from jail, but Superior Court Justice William Anderson had a different amount in mind at the Penobscot Judicial Center.
Ross is charged with aggravated assault — a Class B crime carrying a maximum prison sentence of 10 years — and domestic violence assault — a Class D crime with a one-year maximum prison sentence — for his role in a standoff incident at 33 Dirigo Drive that began around 4:30 a.m. Friday.
Ross was arrested later Friday morning by members of the Bangor Police Department’s Special Response Team after he allegedly brandished a shotgun and threatened to shoot himself.
Ross’ girlfriend, her mother, and his 11-month-old child were all present in the house when the incident occurred. The infant was sleeping on the second floor.
Defense attorney Dennis Hamrick said he thought $25,000 bail was a bit excessive and told Anderson that Ross got some bad news that night and threatened to kill himself with a shotgun.
“One of the women asked him to give her the gun. He didn’t, there was a struggle over the gun and she was struck in the head,” Hamrick explained.
Hamrick went on to add that Ross has a steady job at Diamonds Gentleman’s Club and is also an active duty member of the military who is scheduled for deployment to Afghanistan in August.
After reading the police reports, Anderson said there was probable cause to believe that Ross came to the home after drinking, obtained a gun, and that his girlfriend asked him to give it up but he didn’t. “He swung the butt end of it while being pulled and hit [the mother] in the head. This is not a minor thing,” the judge said.
The two women reportedly left the home without the infant and called police from a store at the intersection of Blue Hill East and Finson Roads
Police called in the Special Response Team, the department’s robot, as well as negotiators in an attempt to make contact with Ross inside the residence.
After making several attempts to communicate with Ross, police sent in the robotic unit, which is equipped with a camera, to make sure the first floor was clear. The Special Response Team followed and found Ross on the second floor. Ross surrendered to police without incident and was taken into custody.
The older of the two women received treatment for a head laceration from Bangor paramedics and was transported to a local hospital.
Before setting bail, Anderson noted Ross’ criminal record over the last six years involving charges of theft, OUI and terrorizing.
Should he post bail, Ross also will have to abide by conditions Anderson set, including no use or possession of intoxicants or weapons, an order to stay away from 33 Dirigo Drive, and no contact with either of the two women or the 11-month-old child.
Anderson approved Ross’ request for a court-appointed attorney and appointed Kirk Bloomer as his defense counsel. He also set a Dec. 11 conference date.
Ross is being held at the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor.

ah yes, neck tattoos again
They’re a good screening device: For a lot of purposes they tell all you need to know about someone.
He has a great job at the local strip club Diamonds, he is in the military, seems like such a great role model to Dads everywhere. Ah, she’s only 11 months, she’ll never remember it so no harm. The surface looks like a young man with his whole life ahead of him. What could possibly be the problem? But, why the excessive bail from this judge? It doesn’t seem to be consistent with the way this judge typically rules for bail amounts. He must have a few other pieces of data not published in this story.
The word on the street is that this guy is singing like a canary. About what, who knows.
Great role models don’t have criminal records for OUI, Terrorizing, etc…
That should just about finish the military career.
Where can I buy stock in neck tattoos?
There are 2 sides to every story and according to the article he didn’t even mean to hit her with the gun.
He NEVER should’ve had the gun in the first place or threatened anyone.
If the mother was soo scared why did she leave her 11 month old in the house with him??!!
There is nothing wrong with neck tattoos ,next people will be decrying the validity of a facial tat.Just think of all the career oppurtunities that come your way when you start rocking a b//ing facial tattoo.
