MACHIAS, Maine — Sgt. Troy Lyons, a Washington County corrections officer, was assaulted by an unknown assailant Monday night as he was conducting a routine perimeter check outside the county jail.
Lyons sustained lacerations to his forehead and a bruised shoulder when the assault occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. He was treated for his injuries at Down East Community Hospital in Machias and released.
“We have nothing,” Sheriff Donnie Smith said Tuesday, referring to motive or suspects. “It happened back by the garage area, where it’s dark and there are no cameras. We’ve looked at all the video, and there’s nothing to go on there.”
Smith said no words were exchanged between Lyons and his assailant.
“Troy said he heard a noise and at first thought it was the wind.”
Smith said Lyons is temporarily off duty as a result of his injuries.

Hmm, sounds like somebody dropping off contraband for an inmate in a good hiding spot (no cameras).
Or an ex inmate with a grudge .
During hurricane like winds?
They would not have caught John Wayne off guard like that.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Washington County could finally come up with some money to put full coverage of the Court House/Jail/Sheriffs Office complex? They can spend hundreds of thousands buying property and re decorating it to suit the DA’s office but can’t afford better security systems at the WCJ? Of course it’s been that way at the Jail for many years. Nothing but the finest hand me down used equipment, if they can all possibly do it.
Oh, a justice groupie, eh? “Wouldn’t it be wonderful…” It’d be more wonderful if there was a lot more work and a lot less substance abuse, but let’s skip all that and let the Prison Industrial Complex sweep up the wreckage, right?
First of all WCJ is a jail not a prison. Secondly what has substance abuse have to do with an officer being hit from behind? Thirdly the neither jails nor prisons sweep up anything. They are on the receiving end of what outside forces bring in.
Since there is someone who has been threatening people within the law enforcement system, perhaps a buddy system needs to be implemented. Especially when it comes to checking the grounds at night.
You are correct and I’m guessing that is probably exactly what is going to take place now. That and maybe more focus put on the person that has been taunting law enforcement and their families.
I mean, this person hangs around the area. He probably knows the routine and just where cameras are and aren’t. I think the sheriff’s department, Machias Police (and any other department who have employees that are targeted by this individual) need to step it up. Sitting back and doing nothing is just giving him more power to do what he wants…..it’s giving him the OK to continue. The police are supposed to be serving and protecting…..
This sounds very fishy. Hey Donnie, how about having your employee do a polygraph.
it was his boss or his wife….
You people have such a immagination….
