WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — Shaw’s Supermarkets on Friday said it would lay off roughly 700 employees at its grocery stores throughout New England.

How many of those layoffs are taking place at the 22 Shaw’s stores in Maine is not being disclosed, Steve Sylven, a Shaw’s spokesman, told the Bangor Daily News. “We’re not breaking it out by state or any other way,” he said.

Approximately 90 affected employees have been informed already and the rest will be informed during the next several days, according to a media release.

“A decision of this nature is never easy, but after careful evaluation, it is unfortunately the necessary step for us to take to help improve our business, reduce expenses and reinvest in more customer-facing initiatives,” Mike Stigers, Shaw’s president, said in a statement.

Shaw’s is headquartered in West Bridgewater, Mass., and is a subsidiary of Minnesota-based Supervalu Inc. However, the grocery store’s roots are in Portland, where George C. Shaw opened his first store in 1860.

  1. Sad. There just aren’t enough jobs. Where are these people going to find work as the holiday season approaches? This is the time of year when families look forward to extra treats on the table that they can’t afford all year long. But so many employers pull the rug out from under their workers at this time of year.

  2. Another chain that did not grow and adapt is swirling the drain.

I feel bad for the employees and their families.  Hopefully they land on their feet.

    1.  Right? This has to stop. I can’t wait another 4 years for the Obama Recovery. I need the Romney Recovery now.

      1. Keep kidding yourself.  How in the world do you believe that Romney, if elected, will swoop in and change things immediately?  Is he going to give you a better job?  Is he going to buy you a house or a car?  Is he going to pay your taxes for ya?  I would have to say no to ALL OF THE ABOVE.  Romney talks like a Used Car Salesman and has no clue how he can get to the numbers he is promising.  Where was Romney in New Jersey and New York, when people were losing everything in their lives?  Yep, sitting in some comfy limo getting out once in a great while to accept a bag of can goods from Americans that actually DO CARE about the people of this country…Meanwhile Obama and Christie were walking the streets of N.Y and N.J.  trying to support the people…Romney is a wolf in sheeps clothing people, DONT GIVE him and the GOP the chance to prove it.

        1. You don’t have a clue Pal. Hope you’re next to get a pink slip, while everyone’s taxes rise to pay off the debt, under your hero Osama’s policies.

      2. How is this Obama? Shaws is terrible, higher prices and grosser stores. They are getting beat by other competitors. This is in no way a reflection on the economy.

        1. Whilst I agree with your premise that Shaw’s is an inferior product to Hannaford, the fact is that more inferior businesses operate and employ people when the economy is revving.  Supply and demand.  In lean times the weak get eliminated. It’s lean times.

I respect all you Obama supporters, but I sure don’t understand you.

          1. Well, actually that is the opposite that happens. In lean time people gravitate to the inferior products because they are cheaper, when things return to normal people stop using the infierior products.

          2.  I shop the sales at Shaw’s and use coupons on the items I’m buying. I get $100’s worth of groceries FREE or nearly free. I can’t do that at Hannaford! So I would say that shopping the sales and deals at Shaw’s is much cheaper then shopping at Hannaford. I only shop at hannaford when I can’t get to Shaw’s or my local meat store.

  3. Maybe if they lowered their prices a little (or a lot) they would get some needed business and not have to lay off employees.  Their prices are higher than anyone else’s around.  I can only afford to get their specials now and again.

    1. You mean advertising buy one get one free on a 1/2 gallon of ice cream (but the regular price of that 1/2 gallon is $6.49) is not a sound business practice?  Their prices are insane, and I can’t believe they have been in business this long given those prices.

      1. It is usual practice for Shaw’s to mark regular price up 50% before they give the Buy One Get One deal…this is from YEARS of experience ordering the product and building the displays.

    2. You have to use coupons to shop at shaws, then you can get the most for your money.  Hannafords prices are the highest prices around.  havent been there for years.

      1. Maybe you should try Hannaford again. I can buy things cheaper there than at Shaw’s without a coupon.

          1. I shop at Toziers in Searsport for the most part. However I’m not above taking advantage of  a sale at Hannaford either.  Didn’t Shaw’s have that stupid card you were supposed to show to get the lower price?

          1. I went to shaws bought the same exact products that i bought at hannaford one month when i got bored.  Same exact things.  I paid $38.99 less at shaws. Peace out

        1.  We spend an average of sixty dollars everyother week for a family of four and we eat like kings. I bet my sixty dollars can get way further at Shaws than your sixty at hannaford,

          1. C’mon! $30 bucks a week for a family of 4?  Riiiight…  Shaws is a nice store, but brutally expensive.  Hannaford is just as bad if you live in a coastal town as they gouge the heck out of the tourists in the summer.  That’s okay, but the locals suffer too and they don’t forget.  Thank goodness for MarketBasket in NH as they are at least 30% less expensive.

          2. Actually I would like to get stuck behind you at the checkout counter.  Can’t be too much on it.  I don’t think you are lying,  I just don’t see how you can do it.  Do you produce much of your own food?  If so, I commend you.  Wish I could.  For the most part I shop at MarketBasket in NH.  I still spend at least $150/ week on groceries and other necessities.

Food prices have nearly doubled in the last few years.  When you look at “real world” inflation with food, gas and oil, electicity etc. the middle class has been hit hard.  My sincere empathy goes out to these good workers from Shaw’s and I hope they land on their feet soon.

          3.  wow..you could earn a living as a personal shopper!!!   In 1967 $15 was my weekly food budget for two  ( in NYC) and as I was a student we hardly ate like Kings.

Even the USFDA’s  “thrifty” plan for a family of four has $100+ as a weekly cost.

You should write an article or have a column to explain how you feed four for and eat like kings for $30 per week.  That must take careful planning and good research to achieve.  Impressive.

          4. Please tell us what your shopping list looks like. $30.00 a week would buy bread and milk for a family of four and not much else.

          5.   We have a stock pile of the staples so now when we go to the grocery store, we might stock up on the ten for ten deals, we routinely go to the store with at least forty or so dollars worth of coupons, its like money to us, then shaws will double coupons up to 99 cents so average another twenty dollars there that puts us up to sixty dollars of free money, then w sixty cash it makes 120.00.  after all said in done if we pay more than sixty dollars for a cartfull of groceries something went wrong.  as it is now all we need to buy is meats and milk and bread products.  our stockpile can easily take us into march. we dont need to go every week

          6. Please let me know when I’m in line behind you that you have a half-hour’s worth of coupons. I do believe that these stores should have a “coupon only” line – use it for food stamps and welfare chits, too. Not all of us have free time to spend waiting unnecessarily. You’d think the store managers would realize this.

        2. Hannaford is dropping most of their brand name merchandise for ” my essentials” and “360” products. Some products they are dropping altogether. To name two that I use,  Cream of Rice hot cereal, and Oscal 500 + D and there are others. I have turned to Amazon.com for these products. When Hannaford was Hannaford they were great, but since this Dutch Co. bought them out  I don’t care for the store anymore. I have never shopped at Shaws, there is no shaws in my town. I am sorry they are laying off people, especially at this time of year.

      2. If you can find a Shaw’s handy.  Closing the Hogan Road store and not replacing it on Stillwater was a big goof.

    3.  Sad to lose these jobs, especially those in Maine, but I have to agree jobieday Shaws own management practices and pricing policies are the real story here.

When I was little Shaws at Mill Creek in South Portland was high quality..the best at the time . Now they have high prices, limited choices and definitely not the highest quality.  I only check Shaws out for supermarket flowers now.  They have no “green” cleaning & paper products, limited organic fruit veggies & dairy and their fish and meat cases, their dry goods aisles offer basic not very compelling goods.

They will continue to lose market share to Hannafords ( which was only a  small south Portland based food distribution warehouse when I was little)

Shaws workers should get ahead of the curve and try to get jobs at Hannafords.

  4. Not good.  But I have to tell you, that store on Main Street is the pits.  I’m not sure why they treat their customers so disrespectfully by being chronically understaffed and having too few checkouts open.  I’m totally done with the place.

  5. Shaw’s is the closest supermarket to my house, by more than a mile.
But I only shop there infrequently, for specials, or if I’m in a rush for one or two items.
Their prices are routinely higher than their competitors.  Their produce is substandard quality and often should be pulled from the shelves, not offered for sale.  And it is still more expensive than the competition.  They charge ridiculous prices for anything that they consider a specialty item.  Their “artisan” bakery makes very poor quality bread.  There really isn’t anything about Shaw’s that a competitor doesn’t do better.
And their loyalty cards – read “we want to profile you so we can try to target market you”-  which are supposedly required to get their advertised specials are an invasion of privacy.

So.  They’re losing the competition for customer dollars?  Sometimes the free market works just fine.

    1. This is National layoffs! Why stop at LePage?(sarcasm). Thanks Obama for placing the whole nation in a depression

      1.  If your facts are based on reality then you will see that Obama has led
us out of the Bush recession and into a consistently positive growth in
GDP. The US has not been in a Depression for nearly 100 years.

        1. How many jobs gain per month vs jobs lost per month..figure that out and get back to me..no.I am a conservative and will not do your homework for you either !

    2.  I hate the governor and even I would not blame him for the loss of jobs at such a poorly run company.  This had nothing to do with Lepage at all.

    3. It’s not LePage, it’s New England and the National economy. Until people get decent paying jobs this will continue. Vote Obama and the only Jobs left will be public jobs paid by stimulus, not private  high paying jobs.

    4. I’m no fan of the governor, but I think Shaw’s has done this to themselves.
Try looking at things for what they are, and don’t try to force fit every situation into a partisan tantrum.

    5.  its not about lepage. its about a corrupt corporation that only cares about profit. welcome to capitalism,

  6. Hannaford is just as bad as shaws when it comes to prices. What is going to happend when Walmart opens there store in Thomaston……..

    1.  untrue…hannaford is not even close…shaws was awful.  Walmart only wins because we reward their practices of under cutting the market.  Walmart is the prime example of capitalism to the extreme.

    2. I really dislike the meat and produce at Wal Mart. Sometimes you can find bargains on canned goods, but for me, that’s about it

  7. Does anyone consider the cost of food has sky rocketed and climbing higher each week.  Beef and corn will be outrageous and already are.  This forces already cash strapped shoppers from buying the box of crackers and chunk of cheese.  Go back to the 50’s and pop your own popcorn on the stove, Less junk in that too.
Canned soups are almost double the cost of two yrs ago.  Cheaper to make your own.  Fuel to transport the goods has soared and so it goes.  This is sad news as noone wants to lose a job, BUT, this is reality that this country is in deep financial stress.
This is the time to form the old food co-ops that the hippies so loved in the 60’s and 70’s.  We can cry in an empty bowl or we can rise above the bad.  Let’s choose to rise above and be kind to one and other and get food co-ops up and running again.

  8. I just find Hannafords much cleaner, better stocked, and more customer service oriented.  Shaw’s seems like the Walmart of grocery stores.

Actually Walmart has a better grocery selection….customer service is about the same though

    1. But I’ve never found rotting produce at H-ford or Shaw’s.  Common occurrence at Great Wal of China Mart.

  9. Really it’s all about the economy. You can’t have close to 23 million people either unemployed or under employed. Taxing the rich is only going to make jobs more scarce. Big election coming up either stay with the same, or try another route. More people on food stamps will not create jobs. If you are happy vote Obama, if not vote Romney. I for one voted Romney

    1.  I voted Romney in Hancock County. He is the only hope for this country. I am terrified of what another 4 years of the current White House occupant is going to bring….

I hope Maine gives him half of her electoral votes. Get out the Vote Second District!

      1. When all of you geniuses who voted for Romney see us head str8 into a depression and are standing next to me in line to get bread, water and cheese, i dont want to hear one word of crying from you.  Romney cares about the top 1% and that is it.  He will outsource even more jobs out of this country and cripple the middle class to a point everyone will be on welfare, and then just to finish it all off, he will further cut that as well.  Republicans are heartless and they care very little about the little guy.  Most that i have talked to believe this country is way overpopulated anyway with a bunch of people that want the government to feed and house and clothe them.

        1. Good point….ahhh, what exactly is your point? You obviously have not a clue about Mitt Romney, as he, and pretty much him alone, turned around the Massachusetts economy. And the Olympics, thank God. He knows how to run businesses and gov’ts. Obama plans on increasing our debt to $20,000,000,000. Never mind the fact he is to trying to sweep under the rug what whappened in Libya. He should be impeached immediately for that alone. And btw, it’s democrats that want a free lunch, not republicans.

          1. Thank you Einstein. What’s your next point of brilliance, that Romney’s never run a business? Go take a nap.

          2.  The skills needed to lead governmenrt and to lead business are different, BECAUSE they have  different goals.

          3. When Osama refers to Governor Romney as “GOVERNOR”, it’s because he’s been a GOVERNOR. He knows how to run both. Osama couldn’t make a profit at a lemonade stand in August.

          4. exactly, one’s goal is profit, the other plunder

one goal predicated upon competition amongst neighbors for the highest profit, the other predicated upon competition amongst neighbors to see who can plunder others most effectively

one goal subscribes to a system based on voluntary action amongst free individuals, the other subscries to a system based on the coercion of individuals to achieve a pre-determined end

          5. One party is bigger gov’t and more waste and handouts. The other is less govt, less waste, less handouts. How do you like your tax dollars going towards free phones for blacks? If you do, vote democrat. If you don’t, vote republican.

          6.  Nobody has a clue about mitt romney because he changes his mind as often as one changes their underwear, and he couldn’t tell the truth if his life depended on it…

          7. You may find out AFTER the ELECTION. By then it’s too late if this failure is elected again. All we know at this point is that there are a lot of liars in this regime, and that the mainstream media is complicit in covering up all  the failures and travesties of this regime. Investigative reporting is dead.

          8. Maybe your right about what Romney may do, but we all know the terrible future with Obama. I will take a change with Romney

          9. You can’t get elected president of the US anymore without being a terrific liar.  Telling the truth won’t win votes.  Telling people what they want to hear wins votes and as we all know, unless we choose to lie to ourselves, both Romney and Obama spend all day long not telling truths but half-truths and outright lies to win a vote.  They are very happy to do whatever it takes to be the most powerful person on earth because they are egomaniacs, not because they give a rat’s patootie about you, me or 700 Shaw’s employees.  Vote for the party you think is more in line with your personal core beliefs, that is the best that can be done, because if you want to vote for the honest one, you won’t find him in this election.

          10. If Massachusetts is not supporting him, if Wisconsin is not even supporting him…that should be a clue to someone with a brain cell….I still think IQ tests should be required to vote….

          11. Actually, I also live in Maine, and own a business there with 10 employees. And I have a pool and a pond out back. Pond is good for you.

          12.  Yea… how is that truth about Jeep working out for Romney? Oh wait, he lied I forgot, he can’t even get public information about a single corporation right.

        2. When you put out the number of obvious lies (Jeep going to China anyone, I want 8-10 years to fix the economy yet Obama has not done it in 4 and that is not good) ah the list goes on, but yeah, I am with you if Romney is in because of these geniuses, I hear one Republican cry about the economy, I am going to tell them to go to the back of the line or jab a sock in their mouth.

        3. Have you ever taken a government class?  Do you understand which party wants big government? Do you realize how much food stamps have increased under Obama?  For every one job found, 76 people went on welfare during Obama’s administration.  People who depend on the government and expect more from the government, vote democrat. Romney wants this country to succeed.  He will not go on an apology tour to other countries.  He understands success because he has experienced it and earned it.

        4. Depression, Really Jeff, where do you think we are headed with 16 trillion deficit, and by Obama own people project 20 trillion by 2016. It sounds pretty depressive to me

        5. But if what you say is true about the depression, etc. at least Romney will be able to blame it all on Obama as he has done with Bush.  I mean fair is fair.  It’s the previous administration’s fault.  Just once wouldn’t it be nice to see a politician have some accountability?

      2. First, Maine has no gender. Maine is an “it.”

Second, a candidate gets either four or three electoral votes, not two (unless there’s an extremely unlikely slate of several popular candidates, one of whom could win the statewide vote without winning either district). Two go to the candidate who wins the state’s popular vote. Then a candidate who wins the popular vote in the first district gets one, and the candidate who wins the popular vote in the second district gets one.

    2.  How can you possibly know what Romney’s plan is? He doesn’t even know…

…on the other hand, under Obama, the economy is improving, the stock market is flourishing and hopefully, with the wars ending and the tax base expanding, the debt problem will be remedied.

      1. You say “under Obama, the economy is improving”. I cannot beleive you actually said that while commenting on THIS story. Lets ask these 700 shaws employees if the economy is improving. Wow, what some people will believe……

        1. This is the free enterprise system at work? Shaws is just plan getting beat by other comptitiers.

          1. we don’t live in anything even remotely close to a free enterprise system…

TARP, The ‘Stimulus’, QE-Eternity, Operation Twist, ZIRP, legal tender laws, tariffs, etc. etc.

        2. So shoppers actually going somewhere else because they can get it cheaper their stimulating that business is not a sign of an improving economy? It is called Shaws not being competitive, their prices are insane, it must have been nearly a decade since I shopped at a Shaws because, well I can go to other stores and find exactly what I want at a better price. You can’t blame any of this on the economy, get competitive or get out

      2. Oh yea, everything is hunky-dorry!!!!!  If you’re so certain that everything is going to get better, please explain in more detail to us how; hell, you just might convince us…….. Think of all the good you can do for the Obama camp…..  Waiting for your reply…….

        1. So what people do not eat anymore? Shaws has become a second rate super market. Losing to other markets like hannahford. This has nothing to do with the economy  but people taking their business else where.

          1. Intelligent people know that mero818. It seems like the Right Wing forget that business practices play a huge role in their profits. I guess the honchos at the top believe that it is better for them to line their pockets then to keep people employed or lower prices. Sounds like “Romney Think” to me.

      3. Right – 700 layoffs definitely points to a rebounding economy.  Huh???  It is clear that you are about to OD on the Kool Aid.

        1. Shaw’s has been putting itself out of business for several years now with its silly sales gimmicks. One memory that will forever be ingrained in my mind is from a few years ago when I was in the Bangor store and a customer appearing to be in her 30s was holding a sales flier and looking at the soda shelves with a Shaw’s manager. The manager had a flier, too, and was glancing back and forth at it and the shelf. They were both trying to figure out how many 2-liter bottles the customer had to buy to get whatever the “deal” was, and whether a particular label belonged to Coke or Pepsi.

If it’s difficult enough that your own upper-level store employees can’t figure it out, you have a problem.

      4. The stock market is over-inflated and will eventually correct itself and any gains.  We supposedly gained 171,00 jobs last month, but read any details of the articles from the liberal media that seem to leave out the other important fact–we lost 170,000….so we actually gained 1,000 jobs last month, which thanks to Bank of America and now Shaws, has quickly faded.  But sure, the Obama economy is improving…

        1. in 2008 we were losing 800,000 a month under Dubya.  I think we have recovered pretty well from that

          1.  You do realize we are down 12 million jobs, right?  We get minimal gains and the media makes it sound like we are all better.  At this point, I don’t care what happened in 2008, I care about what will happen in 2013 and beyond.

        1.  When Romney finishes enforcing new world order and the US becomes the ads on China tv. “For 1 yuan a day you can feed, clothe, educate and medicate this poor American child who only has snow to eat in the winter and mud in the spring. The diseases they got rid of are now back  coming in on foreign products.”
Vote Gary Johnson, for real change and not pick one of the two the government has decided are greedy, emotional cold and weak enough to bend over for their dictate.
By the way if you don’t garden and perserve food, better start and buy heirloom seeds, buy them for your neighbors to keep them pure then save the seeds from some of the product you get and you will always have free food.

      5. Wait, you mean this blank piece of paper I been staring at is not Romney’s plan? For sure I thought I was on to something here hoping it would magically display words before me

        1. Its like the Marauder’s Map, you have to wave your wand over it and say, “I solemnly swear I am up to no good!” The it will reveal its secrets.

      6. ” under Obama, the economy is improving”

Are you living in the United States or do you just read the BDN from afar?

      7. For every one person that has found a job, 76 people went on food stamps under Obama’s administration.  We were told that when the $800 billion stimulus passed, unemployment would be at 5.2% in Oct. 2012.  Well, it is November 2012 now and unemployment is now at least at 7.9%, higher than when Obama took office.

      8.  I can turn your statement around and say how could you possibly know what Obama’s plan is, all he has done is attack Romney.  While Romney has taken his jabs at Obama, he has at least given us an idea of what he will do with the next four years.  People don’t understand that you don’t go into a presidency with specifics on every little thing you are going to do.  You develop an outline to guide you and stick to those points so you are doing what the people voted for.  Just like when Obama ran last time he said he would lower unemployment to around 5% and cut the deficit in half, instead he has actions have resulted in higher unemployment and higher national debt. How could anyone think that this current economy is in recovery. It’s called stagnation folks, and if you vote for Obama this is what you will get for four more years. Robust job growth is recovery, not a regional grocery chain laying off workers.  You know everybody has to have food, meaning that it is not that hard to make money at a business with a nearly endless supply of customers, unless of course everyone is too broke to buy food and crippling regulations, taxes, etc have killed your business.

      9. Apparently you haven’t been paying attention, just like the rest of his brainwashed followers.  That’s what Obama and his regime are counting on, you and others to keep your heads buried in the sand. Wake up, he and his regime are destroying our country. Another four years of his failed policies and we are finished.

    3. well this is just about Shaws getting beat by other Competitors, this is the free market at work. How can you bash it? When the free market works, companies and people lose their jobs because they get beat by better companies, which is the case here.

    4. Try another  route go Gary Johnson, stop voting on people the government picks put, and controls, if you want real change.

  10. EXACTLY! LOWER YOUR FREAKIN PRICES!! I haven’t shopped at Shaw’s in over 10 years! Buy One Get one Free is a Fraud. Rewards Card is another. They jack the prices up then give you the per say Savings!! Please!!!!! Be Fair & Competitive people may come back!!!

  11. They have been in a death spiral for a few years now. Cutting back staffing hours at the registers, always had a wait at Shaw’s registers – made me stop going there. Why bother wasting time to cherry pick the BOGO deals when everything else is more $$$?

  12. It must have to do with Obamacare…  Hey, Gov., Jobs, Jobs, Jobs… going in the wrong direction.

  13. Shaw’s sales when combined with coupons are great deals. They are the most coupon friendly, doubling coupons up to 99 cents (so 75 cents off becomes $1.50 off etc). I have gotten Land O Lakes butter for $1/pound, General Mills cereal for under $1 or even FREE, Yoplait yogurt also wicked cheap or FREE. Their regular prices are high, but as another commenter mentioned, with the drought and price of corn skyrocketing, the prices on everything everywhere are going up.

    1. You get land o lakes butter $1,you save $3 ..but they get you on other items:

      Stoffers Lasagna 90 oz:
      Walmart $12
      Hannaford $13
      Shaw $18

name brand Hot dogs, 8 in package
      walmart $3-4
      hannaford $3-4.50
      shaws $6-7

      rago pizza sauce
      walmart $1.22
      dollar tree $1
      hannaford
      $1.40
      shaws $1.99

      1.  I buy Oscar Mayer all beef franks every week for 3.69 at shaw’s except when Nathans all beef angus are on sale for 3.79 so your figures are a tad off as well as your spelling.

    1. Robert: I wish I would have thought to say that……your statement is its brilliant, sad, and true at the same time….

      1. Yes, and Shaw’s is just of hundreds of retail, and restaurant chains that have yet to announce the impending lay off “blood letting” until the results are in on the election.

  14. Shaw’s has no one to blame but their management, I have not shopped there for at least 5 years. The meat is gross prepacked garbage, the veggies not so fresh, and the prices are high for low quality and bad selection. The bakery is not so good either. Plus the reward card and the BOGO deals are a joke. Ever since they sold out to Kroger’s, and then sold out again to Supervalu, it has not been the same at all to the Shaw’s I grew up with. I prefer to shop at local farm stands when ever I can, and I love my local IGA for meat that is cut right there. I refuse to buy meat or produce at Walmart that is just gross.

  15. Another 700 bite the dust  as the “jobless recovery” continues. These 700 jobs didn’t show up on this weeks 1st time unemployment claiments, nor will the 16,000 getting the “pink slips”  from Bank of America announced recently. Point being the economy is still bleeding jobs.

    1. The two companies that you just talked about are poorly managed. Look at all the people the left BOA because of the fee’s. These 700 jobs have nothing to do with the econmy. Shaws is just plan getting beat by better competitors.

      1. You’re missing the point……there are over 500,000 announced lay offs to take affect before year’s end. I’m not shedding any tears for Shaw’s or BOA, the concern is abput the people loosing their incomes. More joblessness  has a  rippling affect throughout the economy.

        1. No policy in the world would have prevented the Shaw layoffs. Here in maine they are stuck between two competitors, Walmart and Hannaford.

      2. You never.make sense..total lack of economic understanding.WHY did BOARD fees go up..like my fees at the credit union..obamas policies..dodd frank..ti start with

        1. Your fee’s went up so they can make more money. They are not being forced to charge those fee’s also, Bangor Savings bank, I have not had a single fee what so ever? What credit Union do you belong to? Ones around here do not charge my friends fees?

          1. Ever since obama and.friends got there fingers into the banking sector in there attempt to make it better..ya no. Credit cards have also gone up.on fees…

  16. I worked for Shaw’s for 15 years.  I started as a stock clerk and worked my way up to Grocery Manager.  I have lost the use of my right knee, and suffer from severe degenerative disc disease in my back, thanks to my wonderous years at Shaw’s.  What did i get in return for the years of loyal dedication, opening and closing stores all over New England, and even working through a huge Labor Strike in Rhode Island?  I got shown the door, and sorry but we didnt cause your problems.  You must not have been doing things right…Since they trained me to also train others, what a crock of bull they layed on me.  I ended up having to settle with them out of court for Peanuts because i couldnt afford to battle their big wig lawyers.  I am sorry to any person also decieved by this company.  I swore the day they let me go, that i would never spend on penny in ANY of their stores again.  Many of my friends vowed the same.  To this day i still have not.  Good Luck to those associates being let go.  My suggestion would be to check with Sam’s Club and Wal-Mart.  They may not pay as well but they are far more loyal than Shaw’s has ever been to any of their employees.

    1. Jeff i sued them for getting hit by a cart in a store,(employee not watching where they went) they never thought i would do it, sued them for getting hurt.  I won , wont say the amount but it was more than a weeks paycheck maybe even two or three combined lol

  17. Market Competition! Aint it a wonderful thing? If your prices are too high…your competitor will win every time!

    Capitalism at its best!

Maybe we should give this a try in the pharmaceutical world…hmmm?

  18. Hannaford’s is the better place to shop. They have the best prices, the greatest choice of products, and every person who works there is a Walmart greeter. I cannot imagine a finer store in all of the world.

  19. Not surprising. Shaw’s is the most expensive grocery store in the Bangor area. I drive by Shaw’s daily, but go out of my way to shop at Hannaford.

  20. Unfortunately the loss of jobs is to blame on the people who want the cheapest of everything, made in China and sold at Walmart. As long as our economy is about getting the cheapest, then what company is going to invest in the workforce and health insurance? It’s a downward spiral. If you really want the economy to improve, buy fewer things, but purchase quality products from quality manufacturing and producers, from USA or Maine companies when possible.

  21. LOL “A decision of this nature is never easy, but after careful evaluation, it is unfortunately the necessary step for us to take to help improve our business, reduce expenses and reinvest in more customer-facing initiatives,” Mike Stigers, Shaw’s president, said in a statement. WHAT THIS MEANS IS THAT HE WILL GET A BIGGER BONUS THIS YEAR.

  22. Shaw’s has a powerful labor union. Do the math – you have to be competitive to stay in business. Unions reward the union bosses and squash the little guy every time.  Why is Shaw’s so expensive? The union. Same reason every union built product is either overpriced, underbuilt, or generated through a taxpayer bailout. I feel bad for the workers and their families but they have the union to blame for this.

    1. All Shaw’s are non-union stores.  The only unionized portion of the company are distribution centers.  I know this first hand.

      1. Actually UFCW Local 791 represents quite a few stores in Massachusetts and Rhode Island in addition to all distribution centers chainwide, but the Maine stores are indeed non-union.

  23.  You cant jack up your prices and advertise them as buy 1 get 1 free…shaws product is grossly overpriced and i dont know how they’ve stayed in business for so long..As a former worker i see how they price things and they also mistreat there employees..

  24. “Our resurgent American conservatism will not be truly new, looking toward a wave of the future, but rather a genuine revival of intelligent interest in the old liberties and duties of American society. I hope that it will be a conservatism of imagination, generous and charitable. I hope it will be a conservatism illuminated by the wisdom of our ancestors and inspired by a revived consciousness of the moral nature of society.”  -Russell Kirk

  25. I dont do much shopping there only if there is a sale. Hannafords is getting to be just as bad things are going up weekly in there.  It is rediculous on the amount we spend to feed our families.  If prices keep going up the working people are not going to be able to afford food and oil but it doesn’t seem to faze anyone in the government.  There should be some kind of control on what they are charging the consumers for products it is a sin!!

  26. Greed and want for a lavish life style is there only problem, just like all big businesses and Government!  No concern for average person who has to struggle to survive and these are the ones who will suffer!

  27. Most of the comments here deal with the high cost of food in general. Think they are high now, just wait. If obama steals this election, they will go MUCH higher!

  28. It is amusing that commenters say it’s Obama’s fault and this is a reason to elect Romney, as though if another president is elected no one will get laid off in the next four years.  The president has less to do with these layoffs than I do – I shop for groceries and he doesn’t.  I don’t shop at Shaw’s because I think their prices are high and that the “Shaw’s Card” is a bad business concept.  I don’t want to have to use a card to get a regular priced item.  Go ahead and elect Romney.  That way these 700 laid off employees will be back to work the day after the inauguration.

  29. Albertsons overpaid for Shaw’s in 2006. Supervalu overpaid for Albertsons in 2007 and assumed that debt. I worked there as a manager and we were told “We cannot win on price, we have to win on customer service.”  They cannot lower prices due to their debt structure.  When everything tanked in 2008, Supervalu did not start cost cutting or restructuring until 2010.  This is the result of a mismanaged company that made poor acquisitions and poor decisions.

    1. Slight correction: Albertsons bought Shaw’s from J. Sainsbury in 2004, while Supervalu bought Albertsons in 2006. Otherwise your observations are spot-on.

  30. Hi,

Just a note to whoever posted the remark about half gallons of ice cream. Look carefully at the package. All but a very few local brands have not been anywhere near a full half gallon for a long time.

     Thanks.

     david

  31. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

can’t wait for them to close the stores in a couple months from what I hear…I spent 5 years of my life there. The prices are REALLY exaggerated.

  32. I do most of my shopping at Wal-Mart in Newport or Bangor – for practically anything. Having worked at both Wal-Mart and Shaw’s I can tell you that the great value brand of Walmart is FAR GREATER than Shaw’s Brand. For anything else name brand – its the same thing at walmart as it is at shaw’s but far cheaper and you can save a trip because you can go get your paint, food, video games, movies, household crap, and more at the same place.

I did that once as a challenge to see where I could get more stuff for $100. I might have got four bags of stuff at Shaw’s where as opposed to walmart I got a full cartload of food. I mean who pays $6.00 for a box of cereal? BTW as having worked at Shaw’s – the card was a way to track your spending and spending on particular items in different areas.
