WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — Shaw’s Supermarkets on Friday said it would lay off roughly 700 employees at its grocery stores throughout New England.
How many of those layoffs are taking place at the 22 Shaw’s stores in Maine is not being disclosed, Steve Sylven, a Shaw’s spokesman, told the Bangor Daily News. “We’re not breaking it out by state or any other way,” he said.
Approximately 90 affected employees have been informed already and the rest will be informed during the next several days, according to a media release.
“A decision of this nature is never easy, but after careful evaluation, it is unfortunately the necessary step for us to take to help improve our business, reduce expenses and reinvest in more customer-facing initiatives,” Mike Stigers, Shaw’s president, said in a statement.
Shaw’s is headquartered in West Bridgewater, Mass., and is a subsidiary of Minnesota-based Supervalu Inc. However, the grocery store’s roots are in Portland, where George C. Shaw opened his first store in 1860.
Sad. There just aren’t enough jobs. Where are these people going to find work as the holiday season approaches? This is the time of year when families look forward to extra treats on the table that they can’t afford all year long. But so many employers pull the rug out from under their workers at this time of year.
Another chain that did not grow and adapt is swirling the drain.
I feel bad for the employees and their families. Hopefully they land on their feet.

How is this Obama? Shaws is terrible, higher prices and grosser stores. They are getting beat by other competitors. This is in no way a reflection on the economy.
Whilst I agree with your premise that Shaw’s is an inferior product to Hannaford, the fact is that more inferior businesses operate and employ people when the economy is revving. Supply and demand. In lean times the weak get eliminated. It’s lean times.

I shop the sales at Shaw’s and use coupons on the items I’m buying. I get $100’s worth of groceries FREE or nearly free. I can’t do that at Hannaford! So I would say that shopping the sales and deals at Shaw’s is much cheaper then shopping at Hannaford. I only shop at hannaford when I can’t get to Shaw’s or my local meat store.

Maybe if they lowered their prices a little (or a lot) they would get some needed business and not have to lay off employees. Their prices are higher than anyone else’s around. I can only afford to get their specials now and again.
You mean advertising buy one get one free on a 1/2 gallon of ice cream (but the regular price of that 1/2 gallon is $6.49) is not a sound business practice? Their prices are insane, and I can’t believe they have been in business this long given those prices.
It is usual practice for Shaw’s to mark regular price up 50% before they give the Buy One Get One deal…this is from YEARS of experience ordering the product and building the displays.

You have to use coupons to shop at shaws, then you can get the most for your money. Hannafords prices are the highest prices around. havent been there for years.
Maybe you should try Hannaford again. I can buy things cheaper there than at Shaw’s without a coupon.

We spend an average of sixty dollars everyother week for a family of four and we eat like kings. I bet my sixty dollars can get way further at Shaws than your sixty at hannaford,
C’mon! $30 bucks a week for a family of 4? Riiiight… Shaws is a nice store, but brutally expensive. Hannaford is just as bad if you live in a coastal town as they gouge the heck out of the tourists in the summer. That’s okay, but the locals suffer too and they don’t forget. Thank goodness for MarketBasket in NH as they are at least 30% less expensive.

Actually I would like to get stuck behind you at the checkout counter. Can’t be too much on it. I don’t think you are lying, I just don’t see how you can do it. Do you produce much of your own food? If so, I commend you. Wish I could. For the most part I shop at MarketBasket in NH. I still spend at least $150/ week on groceries and other necessities.
Food prices have nearly doubled in the last few years. When you look at “real world” inflation with food, gas and oil, electicity etc. the middle class has been hit hard. My sincere empathy goes out to these good workers from Shaw’s and I hope they land on their feet soon.

wow..you could earn a living as a personal shopper!!! In 1967 $15 was my weekly food budget for two ( in NYC) and as I was a student we hardly ate like Kings.
Even the USFDA’s “thrifty” plan for a family of four has $100+ as a weekly cost.
You should write an article or have a column to explain how you feed four for and eat like kings for $30 per week. That must take careful planning and good research to achieve. Impressive.
Please tell us what your shopping list looks like. $30.00 a week would buy bread and milk for a family of four and not much else.
We have a stock pile of the staples so now when we go to the grocery store, we might stock up on the ten for ten deals, we routinely go to the store with at least forty or so dollars worth of coupons, its like money to us, then shaws will double coupons up to 99 cents so average another twenty dollars there that puts us up to sixty dollars of free money, then w sixty cash it makes 120.00. after all said in done if we pay more than sixty dollars for a cartfull of groceries something went wrong. as it is now all we need to buy is meats and milk and bread products. our stockpile can easily take us into march. we dont need to go every week
Please let me know when I’m in line behind you that you have a half-hour’s worth of coupons. I do believe that these stores should have a “coupon only” line – use it for food stamps and welfare chits, too. Not all of us have free time to spend waiting unnecessarily. You’d think the store managers would realize this.
Hannaford is dropping most of their brand name merchandise for ” my essentials” and “360” products. Some products they are dropping altogether. To name two that I use, Cream of Rice hot cereal, and Oscal 500 + D and there are others. I have turned to Amazon.com for these products. When Hannaford was Hannaford they were great, but since this Dutch Co. bought them out I don’t care for the store anymore. I have never shopped at Shaws, there is no shaws in my town. I am sorry they are laying off people, especially at this time of year.
If you can find a Shaw’s handy. Closing the Hogan Road store and not replacing it on Stillwater was a big goof.
Sad to lose these jobs, especially those in Maine, but I have to agree jobieday Shaws own management practices and pricing policies are the real story here.
When I was little Shaws at Mill Creek in South Portland was high quality..the best at the time . Now they have high prices, limited choices and definitely not the highest quality. I only check Shaws out for supermarket flowers now. They have no “green” cleaning & paper products, limited organic fruit veggies & dairy and their fish and meat cases, their dry goods aisles offer basic not very compelling goods.
They will continue to lose market share to Hannafords ( which was only a small south Portland based food distribution warehouse when I was little)
Shaws workers should get ahead of the curve and try to get jobs at Hannafords.

Not good. But I have to tell you, that store on Main Street is the pits. I’m not sure why they treat their customers so disrespectfully by being chronically understaffed and having too few checkouts open. I’m totally done with the place.

Go with Clynk at Hannaford. A few better bottle returning experience.

Shaw’s is the closest supermarket to my house, by more than a mile.
But I only shop there infrequently, for specials, or if I’m in a rush for one or two items.
Their prices are routinely higher than their competitors. Their produce is substandard quality and often should be pulled from the shelves, not offered for sale. And it is still more expensive than the competition. They charge ridiculous prices for anything that they consider a specialty item. Their “artisan” bakery makes very poor quality bread. There really isn’t anything about Shaw’s that a competitor doesn’t do better.
And their loyalty cards – read “we want to profile you so we can try to target market you”- which are supposedly required to get their advertised specials are an invasion of privacy.
So. They’re losing the competition for customer dollars? Sometimes the free market works just fine.

Does anyone consider the cost of food has sky rocketed and climbing higher each week. Beef and corn will be outrageous and already are. This forces already cash strapped shoppers from buying the box of crackers and chunk of cheese. Go back to the 50’s and pop your own popcorn on the stove, Less junk in that too.
Canned soups are almost double the cost of two yrs ago. Cheaper to make your own. Fuel to transport the goods has soared and so it goes. This is sad news as noone wants to lose a job, BUT, this is reality that this country is in deep financial stress.
This is the time to form the old food co-ops that the hippies so loved in the 60’s and 70’s. We can cry in an empty bowl or we can rise above the bad. Let’s choose to rise above and be kind to one and other and get food co-ops up and running again.
I just find Hannafords much cleaner, better stocked, and more customer service oriented. Shaw’s seems like the Walmart of grocery stores.

Shaw’s has been putting itself out of business for several years now with its silly sales gimmicks. One memory that will forever be ingrained in my mind is from a few years ago when I was in the Bangor store and a customer appearing to be in her 30s was holding a sales flier and looking at the soda shelves with a Shaw’s manager. The manager had a flier, too, and was glancing back and forth at it and the shelf. They were both trying to figure out how many 2-liter bottles the customer had to buy to get whatever the “deal” was, and whether a particular label belonged to Coke or Pepsi.
If it’s difficult enough that your own upper-level store employees can’t figure it out, you have a problem.
The stock market is over-inflated and will eventually correct itself and any gains. We supposedly gained 171,00 jobs last month, but read any details of the articles from the liberal media that seem to leave out the other important fact–we lost 170,000….so we actually gained 1,000 jobs last month, which thanks to Bank of America and now Shaws, has quickly faded. But sure, the Obama economy is improving…
in 2008 we were losing 800,000 a month under Dubya. I think we have recovered pretty well from that

For every one person that has found a job, 76 people went on food stamps under Obama’s administration. We were told that when the $800 billion stimulus passed, unemployment would be at 5.2% in Oct. 2012. Well, it is November 2012 now and unemployment is now at least at 7.9%, higher than when Obama took office.
I can turn your statement around and say how could you possibly know what Obama’s plan is, all he has done is attack Romney. While Romney has taken his jabs at Obama, he has at least given us an idea of what he will do with the next four years. People don’t understand that you don’t go into a presidency with specifics on every little thing you are going to do. You develop an outline to guide you and stick to those points so you are doing what the people voted for. Just like when Obama ran last time he said he would lower unemployment to around 5% and cut the deficit in half, instead he has actions have resulted in higher unemployment and higher national debt. They have been in a death spiral for a few years now. Cutting back staffing hours at the registers, always had a wait at Shaw’s registers – made me stop going there. Why bother wasting time to cherry pick the BOGO deals when everything else is more $$$?

Shaw’s sales when combined with coupons are great deals. They are the most coupon friendly, doubling coupons up to 99 cents (so 75 cents off becomes $1.50 off etc). I have gotten Land O Lakes butter for $1/pound, General Mills cereal for under $1 or even FREE, Yoplait yogurt also wicked cheap or FREE. Their regular prices are high, but as another commenter mentioned, with the drought and price of corn skyrocketing, the prices on everything everywhere are going up.

Yes, and Shaw’s is just of hundreds of retail, and restaurant chains that have yet to announce the impending lay off “blood letting” until the results are in on the election.
Shaw’s has no one to blame but their management, I have not shopped there for at least 5 years. The meat is gross prepacked garbage, the veggies not so fresh, and the prices are high for low quality and bad selection. The bakery is not so good either. Plus the reward card and the BOGO deals are a joke. Ever since they sold out to Kroger’s, and then sold out again to Supervalu, it has not been the same at all to the Shaw’s I grew up with. I prefer to shop at local farm stands when ever I can, and I love my local IGA for meat that is cut right there. I refuse to buy meat or produce at Walmart that is just gross.
Another 700 bite the dust as the “jobless recovery” continues. These 700 jobs didn’t show up on this weeks 1st time unemployment claiments, nor will the 16,000 getting the “pink slips” from Bank of America announced recently. Point being the economy is still bleeding jobs.
The two companies that you just talked about are poorly managed. Look at all the people the left BOA because of the fee’s. These 700 jobs have nothing to do with the econmy. Shaws is just plan getting beat by better competitors.
You’re missing the point……there are over 500,000 announced lay offs to take affect before year’s end. I’m not shedding any tears for Shaw’s or BOA, the concern is abput the people loosing their incomes. More joblessness has a rippling affect throughout the economy.
No policy in the world would have prevented the Shaw layoffs. Here in maine they are stuck between two competitors, Walmart and Hannaford.

I worked for Shaw’s for 15 years. I started as a stock clerk and worked my way up to Grocery Manager. I have lost the use of my right knee, and suffer from severe degenerative disc disease in my back, thanks to my wonderous years at Shaw’s. What did i get in return for the years of loyal dedication, opening and closing stores all over New England, and even working through a huge Labor Strike in Rhode Island? I got shown the door, and sorry but we didnt cause your problems. You must not have been doing things right…Since they trained me to also train others, what a crock of bull they layed on me. I ended up having to settle with them out of court for Peanuts because i couldnt afford to battle their big wig lawyers. I am sorry to any person also decieved by this company. I swore the day they let me go, that i would never spend on penny in ANY of their stores again. Many of my friends vowed the same. To this day i still have not. Good Luck to those associates being let go. My suggestion would be to check with Sam’s Club and Wal-Mart. They may not pay as well but they are far more loyal than Shaw’s has ever been to any of their employees.
Jeff i sued them for getting hit by a cart in a store,(employee not watching where they went) they never thought i would do it, sued them for getting hurt. I won , wont say the amount but it was more than a weeks paycheck maybe even two or three combined lol

Hannaford’s is the better place to shop. They have the best prices, the greatest choice of products, and every person who works there is a Walmart greeter. I cannot imagine a finer store in all of the world.
Not surprising. Shaw’s is the most expensive grocery store in the Bangor area. I drive by Shaw’s daily, but go out of my way to shop at Hannaford.

Unfortunately the loss of jobs is to blame on the people who want the cheapest of everything, made in China and sold at Walmart. As long as our economy is about getting the cheapest, then what company is going to invest in the workforce and health insurance? It’s a downward spiral. If you really want the economy to improve, buy fewer things, but purchase quality products from quality manufacturing and producers, from USA or Maine companies when possible.

Shaw’s has a powerful labor union. Do the math – you have to be competitive to stay in business. Unions reward the union bosses and squash the little guy every time. Why is Shaw’s so expensive? The union. Same reason every union built product is either overpriced, underbuilt, or generated through a taxpayer bailout. I feel bad for the workers and their families but they have the union to blame for this.
All Shaw’s are non-union stores. The only unionized portion of the company are distribution centers. I know this first hand.
Actually UFCW Local 791 represents quite a few stores in Massachusetts and Rhode Island in addition to all distribution centers chainwide, but the Maine stores are indeed non-union.
You cant jack up your prices and advertise them as buy 1 get 1 free…shaws product is grossly overpriced and i dont know how they’ve stayed in business for so long..As a former worker i see how they price things and they also mistreat there employees..

I dont do much shopping there only if there is a sale. Hannafords is getting to be just as bad things are going up weekly in there. It is rediculous on the amount we spend to feed our families. If prices keep going up the working people are not going to be able to afford food and oil but it doesn’t seem to faze anyone in the government. There should be some kind of control on what they are charging the consumers for products it is a sin!!
As a percentage of income, we pay less for groceries now than we did in the early 80s.

It is amusing that commenters say it’s Obama’s fault and this is a reason to elect Romney, as though if another president is elected no one will get laid off in the next four years. The president has less to do with these layoffs than I do – I shop for groceries and he doesn’t. I don’t shop at Shaw’s because I think their prices are high and that the “Shaw’s Card” is a bad business concept. I don’t want to have to use a card to get a regular priced item. Go ahead and elect Romney. That way these 700 laid off employees will be back to work the day after the inauguration.
Albertsons overpaid for Shaw’s in 2006. Supervalu overpaid for Albertsons in 2007 and assumed that debt. I worked there as a manager and we were told “We cannot win on price, we have to win on customer service.” They cannot lower prices due to their debt structure. When everything tanked in 2008, Supervalu did not start cost cutting or restructuring until 2010. This is the result of a mismanaged company that made poor acquisitions and poor decisions.
Slight correction: Albertsons bought Shaw’s from J. Sainsbury in 2004, while Supervalu bought Albertsons in 2006. Otherwise your observations are spot-on.

can’t wait for them to close the stores in a couple months from what I hear…I spent 5 years of my life there. The prices are REALLY exaggerated.
I do most of my shopping at Wal-Mart in Newport or Bangor – for practically anything. Having worked at both Wal-Mart and Shaw’s I can tell you that the great value brand of Walmart is FAR GREATER than Shaw’s Brand. For anything else name brand – its the same thing at walmart as it is at shaw’s but far cheaper and you can save a trip because you can go get your paint, food, video games, movies, household crap, and more at the same place.
I did that once as a challenge to see where I could get more stuff for $100. I might have got four bags of stuff at Shaw’s where as opposed to walmart I got a full cartload of food. I mean who pays $6.00 for a box of cereal? BTW as having worked at Shaw’s – the card was a way to track your spending and spending on particular items in different areas.
Aren’t Shaws employees union? I believe their last 5 year contract has run out.
AFAIK the only union employees at Shaw’s in Maine are at the distribution center in Wells. The last five-year contract was negotiated in 2008.
