ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Dedham man arrested after a six-hour standoff with police on Sunday made his first appearance in an Ellsworth courtroom Monday.
James Garland, 46, was charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and domestic violence assault after an early morning incident at 10 Heber Drive, off Green Lake Road in Dedham.
Maine State Police troopers, Hancock County sheriff’s deputies and Ellsworth and Holden police officers arrived at the lakefront home around 2 a.m. after a woman reported that Garland had assaulted her and that he had fired a shot from a handgun, according to state police.
The woman fled when police arrived and did not need immediate medical attention.
Garland barricaded himself inside the house, police said. Officers called for the Maine State Police Tactical Team and negotiators, who spoke to Garland over the phone and a PA system before he surrendered six hours later.
A Hancock County Jail official said Monday evening that Garland was released on bail around 2:30 p.m. after his initial court appearance, at which he entered a not guilty plea. The official did not know the bail amount or Garland’s conditions of release.

Whats with all these guys in the paper lately causing police standoffs? Sign of times maybe? I’m going with that.
Half of these stories wouldn’t be stories or standoff’s if the police didn’t have to get involved in everything. Cant make a “threatening remark” without someone seriously thinking you are going to murder them.
Note in this case the woman left the house freely and did not require medical treatment. Waste of everyone’s time. Sounds like a family issue, not a police issue.
