It’s news when David Petraeus, the director of the CIA, who previously led U.S. military efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, has an extramarital affair. It’s news when a president cheats. Or a New York attorney general, California governor or candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. We wondered: Are people just more likely to hear about powerful leaders having affairs? Or are powerful leaders more likely to cheat?

A number of studies show that power does corrupt. People in powerful positions are more likely to condemn others’ faults more than their own. Their confidence tends to make them more assertive and impulsive, and they tend to consider themselves more attractive. Of course, each case of infidelity has its own personal reasons. But, taken as a whole, power increases people’s confidence in their ability to attract partners, and that confidence is a strong link to unfaithfulness.

A study last year found the power theory holds regardless of gender. Joris Lammers, a social psychology professor at Tilburg University in the Netherlands, surveyed more than 1,500 professionals who had differing levels of power in their lives, including roles in management, non-management and top-management. “The researchers found that among powerful people, gender made no difference in past digressions or the participants’ desires to cheat,” a summary of the study states.

It did find that the most powerful people — men and women alike — were more likely than the least powerful people to cheat, and the most powerful people were having more affairs. “People often assume that powerful men may be more likely to cheat because they have risk-taking personalities or because of distance, such as frequent business trips that many powerful people go on. We found little correlation between either of the two,” Lammers said. People are probably less likely to hear about women cheating because there are fewer women in power.

In an interview with National Public Radio, science correspondent Shankar Vedantam said it’s not just the powerful Dutch who are having affairs. Biological effects are at play and hold regardless of nationality. When people are given a fleeting sense of power, how they perceive risks and rewards changes, he said. Scans show that the “positive” or “rewards” part of the brains of people in power becomes more activated than the part tasked with preventing bad things from happening.

The tendency of power to cause people to block out what could go wrong doesn’t only happen to CEOs and elected officials. Even a small amount of power can make someone more flirtatious. Psychologist Jon Maner, at Florida State University, did a study of heterosexual college students where he paired them with someone of the opposite sex. Given a brief feeling of power, the students started flirting with the strangers sitting next to them. When the feeling of power was taken away, the students stopped flirting. Men and women showed the same responses.

“Power-holders tended to touch their subordinates more, they maintained more direct eye contact. They behaved in an overall more flirtatious manner,” Maner told NPR.

People don’t try to understand human behavior in order to find excuses for certain actions. It’s done in order to learn and grow. The topic is certainly complex. But by learning how power may boost confidence and increase the propensity for infidelity, self-reflection is encouraged. Solving problems begins with understanding the reasons behind the problems in the first place.

  1. It’s really too bad, but it’s probably always been this way….power breeds arrogance, pride comes before a fall according to the bible…..

  2. Just a reminder that all the medals in the world can’t make you an honorable man. That part takes character.

    1. The medals he or any warrior have earned in harms way are in no way connected to this sort of behavior, nor does said behavior in any way detract from deeds of heroism. He and those like him have earned that respect, and very very little in the world can ever take it away.

However it has been my expereince, (14 yrs. USMC) that officer’s in our armed services tend to award each other awards, that frankly are un-earned and un-deserved.

I once heard of a private who was awarded a bronze star with a combat V for valor for going into a maelstrom of fire, risking his own life to assist several men in evacuating a wounded man from the killbox. The major who gave the order, sending this man into harms way was awarded a silver star for the same action… I don’t beleive, in my heart that the Major in any way earned a silver star, do you?

      1. True on the one hand, and on the other hand the right wingers were fine attacking Clinton, Edwards, Weiner, etc. but then give this ROTTEN behavior a pass. Ah gee, lookie lookie at this: The “family values” party once again being SINFUL HYPOCRITES. But then again, THAT is ALL they are.

    2. The worst part of this is that the general showed that he has little respect for himself……..and less for his wife and children. This is certainly not the kind of behavior I would expect from one of our nations highest military men.

  3. By BDN standards, this storyline is MUCH more interesting/newsworthy than that pesky story about the complete ineptitude of the commander-in-chief’s handling of the Islamist attack on the US consulate in Benghazi and the murder of four Americans, including our Ambassador.

    1. Oh such pathetic grasping at pathetic straws. The Benghazi incident was a tragedy, and if there was a problem with the risk assessment that will be determined and resolved, and those responsible will be hunted down and eliminated. But with all the right wing IDIOTIC BLATHER, once again the ultra HYPOCRITES on the NUMB right wing magically forget that Ronald Reagan failed to heed warnings when over 200 marines were blown to bits by suicide terrorist bombers in Lebanon, and that your boy Bushie DEMOTED Richard Clarke, the BEST anti-terrorism expert we had, and failed to heed warnings about 9/11. But oh, that was all just fine and dandy, wasn’t it??? Now you sad, broken, lost, pathetic, ultra radical, ultra out of touch TeaBABIES and TeaWHINERS are trying to make some kind of poltiical hay out of the Benghazi matter. The fact is, you are WHINING like the sad little BABIES that you are and munching on stinky sour grapes because you LOST the election, and if you keep up this right wing NONSENSE about Benghazi or anything else, what happened last week will feel GOOD to you compared the mega-beatings you are going to take in 2014 and 2016. I suggest you realize that your ridiculous pathetic little TeaParty is OVER and that you rejoin the land of the rational before your dinosaur party becomes just like the dinosaurs: EXTINCT.

    2. Well……I believe they are all dirty in this. When Petraeus threw the President under the bus over Benghazi.

Remember Petraeus said the CIA would not let their own down. This moved it up to the presidential level.

Now when he spills his beans, the propagandists will just say how can Petraeus be trusted? He lied about an affair, possibly exposing national security secrets to a woman who was fighting over him with a Lebanese national (friendly) and allowed this “broke” socialite of into the mix (the director of CIA allowed this, when she would not even pass go on a basic background investigation???).

  4. If you folks remember Admiral Fallon (Centcom Chief who told Bush and Cheney to stand down on Iran invasion…not on his watch), he did not have very kind choice words for Petraeus, to his face.

  5. As long as he hasn’t breached national security it is none of our business who he sleeps with. That is between him, his lover(s), and his wife. Meanwhile it is clear that this is just a GOP diversion to discredit the administration.

    1. Won’t see’em in The Wonderbread bread lines after today if the moronic strikers in Biddo continue their insane strike against a company in chapter 11

  6. They should be thanking the good general in Washington. He has provided quite an opportunity to avoid talking about jobs and the economy for a couple of more weeks.

  7. Bill Clinton did it right in the Oval Office and didn’t lose his job. Okay, Petraeus resigned so now let’s have him testify and let’s find out the truth as to why our community organizer in chief let 4 Americans die with no help sent to them. Let’s find out when he knew of this and why he didn’t act and why it was more important to run right to Vegas. The media has covered up the cover up and did a good job hiding most of this for the election just as Petraeus’s affair was conveniently held back too. Now how about the truth about Benghazi.

  8. OK big deal so now we know the top brass isn’t much different then any other guy. But WAIT there’s more ….. there’s Benghazi. How about we let the CEC – (Conservative Entertainment Complex) write the Benghazi story , I bet even then they won’t be able to agree. The Republican Party has become so pathetic and predictable, when their feet are about to be held to the fire —- they go into myth mode.

  9. Many women are attracted to men with power and money. They use the ususal tools to gain them what they want. The ladies in this incident, as seen in many photos, look like those kind of women. Kelly appears in photos in clothing more befitting of a streewalker. My wife would be ashamed to be seen in public in some of the outfits Kelly has been pictured in. Broadwell has that cold hardened look to her also. The petty “cat fighting” in the emails is a powerful sympton of same.
Powerful men find themselves coveting the company of (ususally younger, often much younger) women, seeing them as the key to the fountain of youth. These women are ususally “throw-away” women, discarded like trash, when the “shiny” wears off.
All of this is a sympton of our society where, today, “anything goes”.

    1. These kinds of affairs have been going on for decades and centuries….with all kinds of leaders and otherwise….kings, and on and on. It has little to do with today’s society. It just was hidden much more in the past (not that that made it right.) The technology and media of today does not allow for getting away with much. These people seem to have “forgotten” that…or else they are entitled narcissists who don’t think the rules and protocol pertains to them.

  10. So the General and a former General head of the CIA
have been accused of resorting to misuse of their friendly weapon and
thereby compromising strict rules of engagement.

  11. I was wondering how long it would take for this paper to get on its knees to sniff David’s crotch.

What bothers me far more than David’s cheating is the C.I.A. director’s inability to keep this affair private. If he can not “cover” this relatively inconsequential “secret” how safe are the real important U.S. secrets that David has been entrusted with?
During the Clinton and Bush administrations, the Red Chinese learned virtually all of our nuclear secrets. The Chinese now know what we have for weapons, where they are, and under what conditions they will be deployed. The Chinese got this information from hacking laptop commputers of diplomats and C.I.A. operatives who took these computers into China. They did this over a period of 12 years during which time we had no idea that the Chinese had the capability of hacking computers which were not in use. (turned off)

  12. “Solving problems begins with understanding the reasons behind the problems in the first place.”

    Thank you for reminding me.

    Again, thank you.
