TOWNSHIP 2 RANGE 8, Maine — The height and sturdiness of a Chevy SUV are part of the reason why two Van Buren residents survived a collision with a moose on Interstate 95 on Tuesday, Maine State Police said.

Gerald and Gloria Michaud were northbound on I-95 near mile marker 232 when the collision with the moose occurred about 5 p.m. The moose was killed and the front end of the vehicle, a 2012 model, took heavy damage, but the Michauds were unharmed, Trooper Larry Anderson said.

“It’s a good, quality car to take the impact that it did, and the front-end damage,” Anderson said. “It could have been a lot worse.”

The travel lane of the highway was closed around the mile marker for about an hour as emergency personnel cleaned up the accident scene.

  1. The safest thing is find an 18-wheeler to follow after dark on I-95 and give thanks for the protection the driver brings. Don’t go out front – you can’t see a moose then.

  2. Ok, let’s here it from those who want more moose permits and an open season on them! It seems that every time there is an accident involving a moose, they start ranting about how we need to eliminate the herds of moose in Northern Maine.
