BREWER, Maine — Two women are facing charges after drugs allegedly were found in their vehicle during a traffic stop, according to police.
Katherine Fernandes, 24, of Brewer and her passenger, Rachel Barrows, 26, of Bangor had been pulled over on State Street around 10 p.m. Saturday for an expired inspection sticker and broken license plate light, according to Brewer police Capt. Chris Martin.
Fernandes had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a prior theft charge, Martin said, but when Brewer police Officer Liz Kelley searched her, she allegedly found marijuana.
That gave Kelley probable cause to search the vehicle, and the search turned up prescription pills not prescribed to either of the women, in addition to heroin and cocaine, according to Martin.
Fernandes was charged with possession of a Schedule W drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana, Martin said, while Barrows is facing charges of possession of Schedule W drugs as she allegedly had cocaine on her person, possession of drug paraphernalia and marijuana possession.
Both women were taken to Penobscot County Jail and later released on bail.

What’s scary these days is that these “ladies” could easily have been armed. When police officers are all business and are not as warm and friendly as we’d like…..think about what they are fearing.

My big Irish family has been in Bangor since the 1840s. Irish cops gave drunks a good beating and then got them home so the Catholic priest could chew on them the next day. Times have changed. I’m simply pointing out that a routine traffic stop isn’t even close to what it was not long ago. Police in the Bangor area have their hands full in a big way every day, not just Friday and Saturday nights like they did a while back.
I don’t disagree in spirit, Westie — just not a big fan of could’ve – would’ve – should’ve and what-if. When I was a kid, we’d get sent home with a whack on the back of the head for most kid foolishness, even stuff like trespassing. “Whattaya stupid? Get Home!” But that was then. I wouldn’t want to be a cop today. In fact, I never did and usually cheered for Al Capone. LOL
A lot of Maine towns and cities can’t find qualified candidates for open positions as policemen. What do we all do when they are forced to hire the second string people?

It’s gotten the same everywhere — all the ambitious younger guys out of training aren’t interested in a salary of 25K and a population of 615-1/2. Jobs like you mentioned used to be more along the lines of retirement spots for folks who’d put in 20 or 30 years as city cops. When life hands ya second string, make good use of it.
My father tells me of similar stories…. Police do have a very difficult job today, but there is still some of that ” old fashioned” stuff, about 6 years ago, I came out of a bar in Southern Maine, was about to walk back to my rental, and the cop outside the bar told me it would not be safe for me to walk alone as a woman, and gave me a ride, just 1 block, to my front door…..and yes, I had a few too many!
