WATERVILLE, Maine — A Waterville transient with a prior conviction for domestic violence assault was arrested again Monday night after threatening an ex-girlfriend, police said.

Michael Foster, 46, had gone to an apartment on Elm Street around 6 p.m. and threatened his ex-girlfriend with a knife, Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey said Tuesday.

Foster, who was intoxicated, was upset over a recent breakup with the woman, according to Rumsey, and was making threats to kill her.

After interviewing the woman, a witness and Foster, police placed Foster under arrest and charged him with domestic violence criminal threatening, Rumsey said.

The charge is typically a Class D misdemeanor, but was bumped up to a Class B felony due to Foster’s prior conviction and the fact that he threatened the woman, who was not injured, with a weapon, according to Rumsey.

Foster was booked into the Kennebec County Correctional Facility. Rumsey said he is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
