BANGOR, Maine — An Ellsworth man was charged by police early Sunday morning after he allegedly crashed a car registered to his mother and then ditched it.

Though he was not arrested, Matthew Blethen, 19, was summoned on charges of operating under the influence of intoxicants and leaving the scene of a property damage accident, Bangor police Sgt. Brad Johnston said Sunday evening, citing a police report.

According to the report, the accident at issue happened about 3:30 a.m. near 303 Husson Avenue, when Blethen allegedly struck a utility pole with the car and then fled the scene, leaving his mother’s 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier behind.

Johnston said police caught up with Blethen at Husson University. It was not immediately clear if he is a student there.

  1. Son, drinking and crashing Moms car wasn’t the brightest thing the world, but some 19 year-olds learn that the hard way. Leaving the car to go sober up a bit wasn’t a horrible plan, but trying to lurk around a college campus at 4AM and hide in plain sight takes the cake. LOL If he has enough sense to clam-up he can beat the DUI — he wasn’t in the vehicle and can claim he had a few pops later over being all shook up, tough to prove otherwise. Best quit DUI now, pally, it’s not you’re cuppa tea.

    1. 10 to 1 ….he already talked with the police!!! dummies talk to the police before they do their lawyers all the time

    2. Lesson I leaned years ago when a cop says tell us the truth and we will go easy on you is just a mistake . When in court if you ask a cop a question that might be in your favor they almost always say they go not recall. Some people get away with more things because they are smart enough to not always tell the truth.
