PORTLAND, Maine — In the aftermath of Friday’s school shooting in Newtown, Conn., President Barack Obama canceled a planned trip to Maine next week.

The president had planned to visit the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday to advocate for his proposal to extend tax cuts for taxpayers earning as much as $250,000. The visit was announced Friday morning.

However, shortly after 4:30 p.m. Friday, the White House released a statement announcing that the president’s Maine visit has been canceled.

  1. Democrats put forth a real and concrete proposal, but what have Republicans offered? They have vague numbers (unspecified tax loopholes/credits being closed and unspecified spending cuts), but nothing solid. Are we supposed to guess what they want? Why are they refusing to get specific?

        1. The proposal, loaded with Democratic priorities and short on detailed spending cuts, met strong Republican resistance.

          1. OBVIOUSLY it’s going to include Democratic priorities, he’s not going to propose something for Republicans. And either way, the Republicans proposal has been infinitely more vague.

        2. I think no matter what, the American people lose. Government takes so much from everyone, and its never enough, they always need more, more, more. They never make the cuts in spending truly needed to make a difference. So maybe 98% get a small victory and their payroll taxes will remain the same, so what? They will get us another way. Government always wins in the end. They will always get their money. Its not a conspiracy, its reality.

          1. The reddest Republican states take far more in federal benefits than they pay in federal taxes. The bluest Democratic states pay far more in taxes than they receive in benefits. As a nation, the government is spending more money than it receives, so the notion that the government takes so much from everyone is silly. Taxes as a percentage of GDP are lower than they have been for over 50 years.

  2. Given the disgusting (butt kissing) commentary Mr. LePage has put out concerning what he would tell our President to do, I’m surprised the President would take the chance of visiting us again. I suppose, the President probably views Mr. LePage’s past comments much as most Mainers have come to see them, as laughable.

    1. Hopefully Mr Lepage shows up in Portland with his ready made democratic sponsored camera crew and tells the squatter to his face.

      1. Unlikely. If he does I’ll eat these words but for now I gotta say that LePage gives all the appearence of being a cowardly blowhard who would never confront someone like the President (who is clearly superior to him in every way) face to face and repeat his silly comment. My bet is Paulie will hide away and say nothing until he knows that a real leader is no longer around for us to use as a comparison to his own lack of skills. Which in itself is kinda sad because right now we need a real state leader to bring as much help and assistance as possible to lead us out of this economy as soon as possible.

        1. There is a better chance of seeing a Moose fly then seeing Tea Party Paulie anyplace close to the USM campus on the day The President of The United States visits Maine. LePage is a bully who is at his best when he has his gang to back him up. Unfortunately for LePage, and fortunately for Maine, his gang got driven out of office in the November 6th Republican bloodbath.

          1. Obama is a bully, his way or no way. Then you dare to complain about LePage. Obama the man who will not compromise.

          2. You keep forgetting that the American people just re-elected Obama in a landslide. And overwhelmingly support his plan to raise taxes on the top 2%. He may be a bully like you say but he sure has one hell of a gang (the American people) backing him up. LePage’s gang got slaughtered at the polls on November 6th.

          3. I think taxes should be raised on the rich as well but I do not believe that will make any difference in the deficit. It is well documented that the tax increase is worth about 8 days of government spending. A president that proposes that for a fix is a bald faced liar. We need both, massive tax increases coupled with massive spending cuts. America needs to go back to work and stop leaching from the government. And government needs to go back to being government.

          4. For once you and I are in agreement. Taxes do need to go up on the wealthy, hell the wealthy themselves are saying that. I also agree that we need to cut spending. Will that happen? Probably. Will it fix the problem? Probably not. Until we as a Nation decide that being a member of the US House and Senate should be a part time job and not a career we will never fix the problem. Current members of congress spend most of their time raising money to get re-elected and in the process sell themselves to those who contribute to their campaigns. We need term limits , in my opinion, for both The US Senate and House. One six year term for the Senate and one 4 year term for the House. Until that is done, if it is ever done, we will constantly be fighting this battle. Let’s face it special interest money is what is really calling the shots in Washington on both the left and right and until that ends we will never get the problem fixed.

          5. All one has to do is listen to him, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see it. Look at all the hidden fees in Obama care.

          1. Obamaphoneman won by a little less than 5 million votes, less than 2% of our 300 million plus population. Wrong again wolfndeer.

          2. You’re not being honest. Our voting population isn’t 300 million, so for you to imply that he only won by 5 million out of 300 million is a lie. Total votes were around 120 million.

Further, we don’t use a popular vote system in this country. We use the electoral college. 332 to 206 IS a landslide. You’re the one who is wrong. You lost, be a grown up and deal with it.

          3. No likes for your comment besides your own? Must be a new crop in at the local MJ dispensary. Thanks for confirming that our taxer in chief won by about 6 million votes (I’m rounding up) which if you even use the 120 million voting figure relates to less than 5% of that population. The electoral college can amplify the absolute winning margin, but gives no mandate.

          4. LOL, we use an electoral college system. That’s how we vote in this country. It was a landslide. Grow up.

          5. Bruce go back to worrying about birth certificates and what kind of fish are in the Penobscot. The election was held, the votes were counted. Your side lost and you lost big. Your side not only lost the Presidential race, you lost seats in the US Senate, you lost seats in the US House and in Maine Republicans will be spending the foreseeable future cleaning up the mess from November’s blood bath. I along with the majority of the American people made a choice on November 6th. We knew what our choices were and we chose Mr. Obama. Tell you what you keep worrying about all those fee’s. I will spend my time thinking about what is really important, my family, my friends. You can live your life spouting off about fees, birth certificates and anyother bogus thing you and the rest of your friends on the radical right can come up with. The fact is that Mr. Obama is The President of the United States of America and will be for the next 4 years. There is nothing you who were on the losing side can do to change that. If you love your country half as much as you claim then instead of constantly talking about doom and gloom why not see the positive aspects of America and celebrate those.

          6. Good comments. People like little timjy can say he isn’t their president, but he very much is. (makes me smile….)

          7. liberal papers are already saying, to start with 63 or something for 3 years on Obama Care, that is the tip of the iceberg. Medicare prem. will be going up.

    2. I think Le Page is exactly right and how can the two party’s compromize when Obama is saying My way or The Highway.

      1. You think a peon representative from a poverty ridden state should be telling people that he’s going to tell the nation’s leader to “Kiss my butt?” If so you have no credibility in a real conversation about anything. The only thing I’ve heard that the President isn’t going to back down from is the Bush Tax Breaks for the rich. Otherwise everything’s on the table.

        1. Do you think a “community organizer” from the corrupt city of Chicago should be telling anyone what to do? The Bush tax breaks were not just for the rich. Someday you will learn, it will be an expensive lesson for you.

          1. The Bush tax breaks were mostly for the rich and the President is refusing to extend those breaks only for taxable income over $250,000. Thus the rich keep their tax breaks on their first $250,000 of taxable income.
Gee, didn’t we have an election for President a month and a half ago? Didn’t President Obama win? Doesn’t that give him some power, such as the power to veto? What is it about a democracy that has you confused?

        2. You do recall that the Bush cuts were set to expire twice in the past 4 years and Obama lobbies to keep them intact both times. He owns the cuts for the rich.

          1. If as you say the President “owns it” then like the things you own yourself it must be his to do with as he pleases. Right? Why not stop crying about some rich folk going back to a previous tax structure so that Washington can finally move forward on something without yet ANOTHER filibuster from the GOP/Tea Party/Party of “Hell No?” This is a losing battle for consevatives. I honestly don’t know why they’re so willing to shoot themselves in the foot once again, especially after the trouncing they just took in the last election cycle.

So you think that in the debts of the Bush Recession it would have been a good idea to go back to a tax structure more in line with the Clinton years? WOW! Given what you normally say here, I must say I’m a bit surprised to hear you being more progressive/liberal than either the President or myself. There may be hope for you yet Entitledone.

    3. Nice job, taking the comment out of context. He was speaking to fisherman who Obama basically put in the unemployment lines. Nice spin propaganda man. Oh yeah, and the fact that LePage is not setting up an insurance exchange, neither are 35 other states! You won’t read that on the pages of the BDN. ONly 15 states set up exhanges for the new Obamacare. You really need to stop with your endless references to things which are in the past and have nothing to do with the topic on hand. The Pres. is still campaigning and blowing through all of our money. HE will be going on a 20 day vacation to Hawaii soon. Imagine if Bush went to Hawaii. Funny how Obama rarely went to Hawaii when he was a senator.

  3. Why would this egotistical slug be coming to Maine to make a speech? The campaign is over. Stay in Washington and get the JOB done……………………..

    1. He will be preaching to the choir, and he has a ready-made audience who will bow down to the Dear Leader.

    2. Mind your manners, he is the President of these united (subject to secession bids) states. I weep for my country when so many on the left or right clamor for dissolution and chaos.

        1. timjy: Try staying with the grownups. Unlike, Mr. Bush, Obama has run twice AND won the popular vote twice. You may not like it, but the Dems took the teas to the woodshed. If I were you, I’d work my tail off to broaden the base of the “whippie” party.

        2. Timjy, W surely was one of a kind whose accomplishments deserve nothing but superlatives: worst terrorist attack in US history; second worst economic crisis in US history; worst response to a natural disaster in US history; second worst foreign policy mistake in US history (after the Vietnam War). He took Clinton’s world of peace, prosperity and budget surpluses and decided he could make a difference. Historians will long celebrate him as the worst President in US history.
I think we need to build a monument to W and celebrate him as the last white male ever elected President of the US. Who do you think the Democrats will elect in 2024 after Hillary Clinton finishes her two terms? I am leaning towards a Latino.

    3. Wake up, John Boehners’ Republican cronies left Washington last week. Why did they leave Washington before a deal was done?

  4. The President has specified the tax rates he wishes to raise and the spending cuts he wishes to make. The Republicans have said “eliminate tax deductions” and not named a single deduction they might cut. Similarly, while they first suggested cutting the rate of increase for Social Security benefits and raising the Medicare eligibility age to 67, they now want only unspecified spending cuts and wish the President to propose more cuts without naming a single cut they would propose.
This shucking and jiving by the Republicans is even worse than Romney’s charade. While Romney refused to name a single tax deduction he would eliminate, he at least proposed a single spending cut: funding for Sesame Street.
Negotiation is a two party endeavor; the Republicans remain AWOL.

    1. Obama has not proposed spending cuts other than cuts to be named later. He has half a plan, raise taxes on the rich which will raise enough revenue for a week of government. Great plan. While I agree the republican plan is unspecific, it’s up to Obama to lead and once again, he is failing. Even George Bush got both sides together once in a while. To do so, you cannot be cynical and make fun of the other side and you cannot be racist. Obama does/is both.

      1. You are dead wrong. He proposed cuts in Medicare expenditures by allowing Medicare to negotiate for a lower rate for prescription drugs purchased from pharmaceuticals (barred by a Republican Congress when it passed Medicare Part D), and lower payments to Medicare providers. There are additional cuts in farm price supports. All of these cuts total 400 billion dollars over ten years.
The proposed tax increases, over ten years, would net 1.6 trillion dollars.
If we assume this is 160 billion dollars in tax increases a year, this is, standing alone, enough to run the government for a little over 18 days. More significantly, it closes about a sixth of the current deficit.
As a racist professes an ideology that one race is inherently superior to all others, your comment is just crazy talk.
Bush created the deficit by lowering the Clinton tax rates, starting two completely unfunded wars and a completely unfunded Medicare Part D program, and tanking the economy. If Bush was such a great President, why has his own party kept him as far away from its last two conventions and Presidential candidates as possible?

        1. Give us quotes and citations ….allowing MEDICARE to negotiate for lower rates isn’t a spending cut as much as it is a strategy for reducing prescription outlays.

Lowering payments to providers is a boomerang which will hurt his core constituency of health care providers who find under the ACA, not only has their paper work gone up with out compensation for the time to complete it; but lowering the rate of reimbursement will force many to opt out of Medicare and deny Seniors their choice of providers…..and you know who is going to be left to work for poverty ways….all the foreign labor used to working for next to nothing and having degrees from Grenada, etc.

          1. Read the NYTimes article that Wolfndeer cites below.
As my tax dollars pay for those prescription drugs, paying less for those drugs for the elderly surely is a spending reduction, at least as the rest of us understand the English language.
While I have heard of some providers refusing to accept Medicaid, I have heard of no providers refusing to accept Medicare. It commands too large a share of the market for paying for health care services. Every provider with whom I speak prefers the Medicare paperwork to the private insurance paperwork. The ACA will make the private paperwork easier, as the policy terms will be more standardized.
Put down the Kool-Aid and get the hydrophobia test.

        2. Absolutley dead on correct. You got it all, with historical and financial accuracy, context and the consequences for both sides. Do us all a favor and run for Governor. It’s been a VERY long time since Maine has had anyone there that has as clear a view as you. Given Paulie’s current string of temper tantrum’s, and the up-coming State House session, you already have a huge lead on the fact’s alone.

          1. Thank you for your kind words, but running for office does not appeal to me.
LePage has done wonders for education in Maine. The day Baldacci left office, only 1% of Maine high school seniors could read and write better than their governor. The very next day, as LePage was sworn in, fully 99.5% of Maine high school seniors could read and write better than their governor!

    2. So Barry is not coming to Maine??
OK, then I guess traffic wont be all frigged up,more than normal, that day.

      1. Not pressured to win an election , he dosen’t have to leave the impression that he cares about Mainer’s anymore !

    3. No way has he SPECIFIED his spending cuts…..got some facts to go with your bias?? I believe the Republicans have a book filled with them.

      1. Read my post above and the NYTimes article cited by Wolfndeer.
The Republicans do have a book filled with biases: anti-immigrant, anti-gay, anti-Latino, anti-science, anti-reality, etc.

  5. Perhaps instead of taking the circus on the road, he could actually offer some concrete proposals that don’t involve expanding the budget.

    1. He’s not going to write the Republican proposal for them. He gave his proposal and we’re still waiting on what “closing loopholes” and “spending cuts” specifically means to Republicans. They seem to refuse to say.

  6. So an unwillingness to compromise on Democrat demands makes Republicans obstructionists, while Democrats who won’t budge on entitlement spending are clearly doing their part to reach a compromise?

How is it better for the country that the celebrity-in-chief come and talk about his plan and grandstand rather than stay in Washington and try to work through it?

    1. But that’s not true — Democrats have always been willing to compromise on entitlement cuts. That’s why Obama’s proposal includes cuts to entitlement. Further, remember how Obama was criticized for “pulling the plug on grandma” for his entitlement cuts?

Come back to reality and remember who won the election.

  7. Glad he is going to Portland. They deserve him.Why can’t he keep his expensive butt in Washington and quit campaigning.I for one could care less to have him here.We have enough moonbats without the chief.

    1. Same here – the city says they’re broke but here comes another big bill for security and his visit. They should send the bill to Pingree and Sussman.

  8. Well well well. Awesome. I would like to hear more about the “fiscal cliff” from the President. I know this much will be conveyed to Portland and this is a fact.

“this is all the fault of George Bush”
    or
“this is the fault of John Boener”
    or
“this is the fault of the Republicans”
    or
“this is the fault of Santa purchasing goods from China because the elves got smart to the Slave Labor the past 2k years and have now formed a union so we have to import toys from Asia”.

Like he said to Mitt Romney “I am the President”
So after 4 years we know it isn’t his fault in any way. As WJC said “No President could have fixed this in 4 years”

Question: Then why did he say he would fix it and if he didn’t he shouldn’t be re-elected. Did he lie or was it a bunch of “malarkey and falsehoods” or was it just poor arithmetic?

    1. You guys keep saying that Obama blames everyone else, but I never actually see him do that. Time to stop changing the subject, time to stop lying and stalling, time to address the actual issues at hand. Republicans need to offer up a real concrete proposal….we’re waiting…

      1. Open your eyes and clean out your ears… O has been using the “blame game” ever since he has been in office. (I apologize for this response if you are blind and deaf)

    1. I know! I thought they already got all the campaign bucks back when the lobster dogs showed up at the Portland museum.

  9. Maybe Pingree can pay Portland back for the costs of his visit. Maybe Sussman has the bucks, because Portland keeps saying to the state they’re broke.

  10. waste of time. Preaching to the choir.. I say lets not fall off the cliff, lets run and jump off of it.. Lets go back to the Clinton ara tax policies today.

  11. I am in hopes that Governor LePage shows up and is able to debate with the President. Governor LePage, regardless of whether you agree or not, has tried very hard to be fiscally responsible, He has made some hard decisions, some have been very unpopular, but he has tried to cut Maine’s budget to help us all out….

  12. Wow, the sour grapes contingent is out in force. Your party lost because they’ve lost their way but keep whining about the president. We’ll be watching the final destruction of the republican party while you’re busy.

  13. OK lets all get our Don’t Tread On Me signs and give him the facts to solve the problem.
CUT SPENDING and not those programs we have paid for….Start with his employees.. Bring back the jobs lost to China and Russia he sent there by elimination of our space program.. Showcase those who have become well to do thru hard work..Cut the wellfare now and if you are able to work ..any job.. it must be taken in order to qualify for anything.
Send those that do not belong hear or don’t like America back to where they came !!

  14. I’d like to see him come to Millinocket to see what the fiscal cliff looks like-

Yeah I know, no one in Washington cares about Northern Maine, especially Michaud.!

  15. Going to be in Maine, Portland. Maybe he should go to Fort Kent or somewhere else in Maine instead of Southern, Massachusetts. Though I understand if it had not been for Liberals in the South he might not have taken Maine lol. Look at the Hidden cost coming out in Obama Care and yet the Liberals still think he is something. Wait till they start paying for all the little payments and increases in that mess.

      1. It is Democratic State, though I do not think he knows where Northern Maine. Oh too educate yourself, if I remember he did not win in Piscataquis County, well at least 1 out of 16 has some smarts. Though others barely.

  16. Is he going to explain to the 51st and 52nd workers at business who employ just over 50 people why they are being laid off so the businesses can avoid being penalized for falling into a certain tax bracket under the new tax rules? Probably not

  17. This would be a good time for our illustrious guboner Paulie LaPudge to take center stage and tell Obama just where to go. The Pudge has kept Maine dead last in the Forbes list of business friendly States.

  18. +
Why doesn’t Obama stay in Washington DC and solve the problem instead of running all over the country telling everyone what will happen if it does not get fixed. The reason why is he can’t come up with anything reasonable to fix it either. The list that someone referred to is a JOKE. The reason Congress holds the purse strings is so that people like Obama don’t spend us into oblivion. There is middle ground there all they have to do is sit down and get real. I hope the Republicans camp in Washington DC this Christmas season and stand their ground. Call Obama’s bluff he is all wind.

    1. Where have you been? John Boehners’ Republican cronies left Washington last week. Why did they leave Washington before a deal was done?

  19. Democrats put forth a real and concrete proposal placed around the legs of the American people before he pushes us into the sea..

    1. John Boehners’ Republican cronies left Washington last week. Why did they leave Washington before a deal was done?

    1. That’s hypocrisy. The majority of Americans support his proposals and he’s going out there and selling them. Isn’t that exactly what Republicans did with all those “town hall meetings” during the healthcare debates? They sold their lies about “death panels” and ironically called Obama’s cuts to entitlements “pulling the plug on grandma.”

  20. OK, There are to many stupid Americans to understand what will happen if they don’t allow it to go over the Fiscal cliff.. We need to Raise taxes on all americans right off or the price of gold will go to 10K an once and the federal reserve note will be worthless. and then all hell will break loose.

  21. Yeah, it’s winter, go to H _ _ _ _ _ where it’s warm, (That’s Hawaii) for your Kwaanzoo vacation…..

  22. I believe Obama has soe serious cuts. He won’t give 500B to Solyndra, he will only give them 450B. I also think they should let HIM control the debt ceiling. After all the unions need more money so they can give back next elections and Hollywood and the libber media need funding. I sure hope he understands what shovel ready means so when he gives more money away he can use some other excuse. This community organizer has no intention of cutting anything. They are just not going to spend all the proposed increases. It is a game to say they are cutting spending but will ONLY spend so much. Taxing the rich..what a joke. All the sheep will get to feel good for sticking it to the evil rich but have no clue where the money will go. Teah, you will get another dollar in your welfare check and you will love Obama more. He really stuck it to the rich. But the rest will go to his pals and nothing will be cut.

  23. maybe the shooting in CT will cause both sides to stop f’ing around, balance the budget, and go home to their own families and enjoy the holidays. wishful thinking?

  24. I’d like to hear the other side’s viewpoint. Why does the President get to use all the tax money he can get to lobby people for his proposal, staging hand wringing emotional appearances before ultra friendly audiences to repeat his mantra?

    1. Republicans have never done anything like this before. Nope. That’s not what those “town hall meetings” during the healthcare debate were about. Nope, not at all.

  25. Go back to Hawaii He has no plan to cut anything except the military Freeloaders bums and unions need not be afraid

  26. Probably a good idea to stay in DC and get his own house in order. Maine is already well into a fiscal death spiral and needs little or no help from a feckless politician committed to plunging the nation further into a fiscal death spiral. One thing is for sure–spending money you don’t have and then borrowing it from foreign nations and confiscating it from earners so you can spend even more simply isn’t gointg to end well. Mark my words on that.

  27. Thank God he is not coming!!! Now we do not bear the security expense (and yes that is a requirement) for this tap dance. “Allow medicare to negotiate for lower rates as a means of reducing expenditures?” They had damn well better be doing that now or has this administration been allowing waste in government as a normal operation for the last 4 years?. I also wonder how long it will be before the new health care plan begins to use political affiliation as a means of deciding how health benefits are allotted, to start. Have we not already seen how some govt’ jobs are filled by posting an opening “in name only” when the “applicant” has already been decided upon? Will Govt. employees and /or elected officials be required by law to participate in Obamacare? (Didn’t think so from the start.) Expenditures are reduced by eliminating programs and firing people. I haven’t heard anything that resembles that yet. Everything else is BS..

  28. The Bangor Daily news needs to weed the garden. Step up like the Sun Journal and require real names and lets have rational discussions.

  29. IMO by him not coming to Maine he stays sheltered by his panty waist yes boys and can avoid answering any questions as usual. No surprise here. Both party’s do what they do best and that is nothing but spend money that benefits them period.. I have never seen this great country so much in trouble as it is now. Both party’s had better stand back and take a good look at each other and where this country is today and save it before it is to late.
