PORTLAND, Maine — In the aftermath of Friday’s school shooting in Newtown, Conn., President Barack Obama canceled a planned trip to Maine next week.
The president had planned to visit the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday to advocate for his proposal to extend tax cuts for taxpayers earning as much as $250,000. The visit was announced Friday morning.
However, shortly after 4:30 p.m. Friday, the White House released a statement announcing that the president’s Maine visit has been canceled.
Democrats put forth a real and concrete proposal, but what have Republicans offered? They have vague numbers (unspecified tax loopholes/credits being closed and unspecified spending cuts), but nothing solid. Are we supposed to guess what they want? Why are they refusing to get specific?

I think no matter what, the American people lose. Government takes so much from everyone, and its never enough, they always need more, more, more. They never make the cuts in spending truly needed to make a difference. So maybe 98% get a small victory and their payroll taxes will remain the same, so what? They will get us another way. Government always wins in the end. They will always get their money. Its not a conspiracy, its reality.
The reddest Republican states take far more in federal benefits than they pay in federal taxes. The bluest Democratic states pay far more in taxes than they receive in benefits. As a nation, the government is spending more money than it receives, so the notion that the government takes so much from everyone is silly. Taxes as a percentage of GDP are lower than they have been for over 50 years.

I think taxes should be raised on the rich as well but I do not believe that will make any difference in the deficit. It is well documented that the tax increase is worth about 8 days of government spending. A president that proposes that for a fix is a bald faced liar. We need both, massive tax increases coupled with massive spending cuts. America needs to go back to work and stop leaching from the government. And government needs to go back to being government.

Current members of congress spend most of their time raising money to get re-elected and in the process sell themselves to those who contribute to their campaigns. We need term limits , in my opinion, for both The US Senate and House. One six year term for the Senate and one 4 year term for the House. The Bush tax breaks were mostly for the rich and the President is refusing to extend those breaks only for taxable income over $250,000. Thus the rich keep their tax breaks on their first $250,000 of taxable income.

The President has specified the tax rates he wishes to raise and the spending cuts he wishes to make. The Republicans have said “eliminate tax deductions” and not named a single deduction they might cut. Similarly, while they first suggested cutting the rate of increase for Social Security benefits and raising the Medicare eligibility age to 67, they now want only unspecified spending cuts and wish the President to propose more cuts without naming a single cut they would propose.
This shucking and jiving by the Republicans is even worse than Romney’s charade. While Romney refused to name a single tax deduction he would eliminate, he at least proposed a single spending cut: funding for Sesame Street.
Negotiation is a two party endeavor; the Republicans remain AWOL.

Obama has not proposed spending cuts other than cuts to be named later. He has half a plan, raise taxes on the rich which will raise enough revenue for a week of government. Great plan. While I agree the republican plan is unspecific, it’s up to Obama to lead and once again, he is failing. Even George Bush got both sides together once in a while. To do so, you cannot be cynical and make fun of the other side and you cannot be racist. Obama does/is both.

He proposed cuts in Medicare expenditures by allowing Medicare to negotiate for a lower rate for prescription drugs purchased from pharmaceuticals (barred by a Republican Congress when it passed Medicare Part D), and lower payments to Medicare providers. There are additional cuts in farm price supports. All of these cuts total 400 billion dollars over ten years.
The proposed tax increases, over ten years, would net 1.6 trillion dollars.
If we assume this is 160 billion dollars in tax increases a year, this is, standing alone, enough to run the government for a little over 18 days. More significantly, it closes about a sixth of the current deficit.

Lowering payments to providers is a boomerang which will hurt his core constituency of health care providers who find under the ACA, not only has their paper work gone up with out compensation for the time to complete it; but lowering the rate of reimbursement will force many to opt out of Medicare and deny Seniors their choice of providers…..and you know who is going to be left to work for poverty ways….all the foreign labor used to working for next to nothing and having degrees from Grenada, etc.

As my tax dollars pay for those prescription drugs, paying less for those drugs for the elderly surely is a spending reduction, at least as the rest of us understand the English language.
While I have heard of some providers refusing to accept Medicaid, I have heard of no providers refusing to accept Medicare. It commands too large a share of the market for paying for health care services. Every provider with whom I speak prefers the Medicare paperwork to the private insurance paperwork. The ACA will make the private paperwork easier, as the policy terms will be more standardized.

Maine is already well into a fiscal death spiral and needs little or no help from a feckless politician committed to plunging the nation further into a fiscal death spiral. IMO by him not coming to Maine he stays sheltered by his panty waist yes boys and can avoid answering any questions as usual. No surprise here. Both party’s do what they do best and that is nothing but spend money that benefits them period.. I have never seen this great country so much in trouble as it is now. Both party’s had better stand back and take a good look at each other and where this country is today and save it before it is to late.
