RUMFORD, Maine — A Rumford man was arrested on New Year’s Day after police say he drove drunk into the side of Jake’s Garage on Prospect Avenue.

Jeremy Dow, 22, was charged at 1:10 a.m. with operating under the influence, leaving the scene of a property-damage crash and felony aggravated criminal mischief. He was released on $1,000 unsecured bail and will be arraigned on Feb. 5 in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris.

According to the uncompleted report of Rumford police officer Donald Miller, Dow was driving a black 2002 Dodge pickup truck when it left the roadway, struck the garage and continued farther down the road.

A witness who emailed the Sun Journal, said she was across the street, ringing in the new year with friends when the accident happened around 12:45 a.m.

She said they heard a loud noise, “then we saw a truck speeding in the direction of Dan’s Automotive on the wrong side of the street; they hit a snowbank and kept going.”

Another garage, Dan’s Automotive Repair, is at 625 Crescent Ave., which is farther down the road and off Prospect Avenue.

As of Wednesday morning, officer Miller had not provided a damage estimate in his report for either Jake’s Garage or Dow’s pickup truck. No one answered the phone at the garage or the door, which was locked.

A pickup truck with a plow blocked the access road into the business lot closest to the damaged wall across from which stood a pile of stacked debris.
