Laurie J. Piper-Provost, 58, died peacefully March 3, 2013, at her home with her husband by her side after a long illness. She was born May 25, 1954, in Skowhegan, the daughter of Bion and Florence Piper.
Laurie graduated from the University of Maine with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, 1976, and worked for a short time at St. Joseph Hospital, Bangor. She then went to work at Maine Medical Center, Portland, in the Cardiac Unit. In 1979, Laurie returned to Bangor, where she went to work at Eastern Maine Medical Center in the Open Heart and Cardiac Care Unit, and she retired from there in 2011 because of her illness. Laurie loved sailing with her husband out of Seal Harbor on their sailboat, Cillori, and traveling to exotic places, especially in the Caribbean and to St. Martin. She enjoyed gardening and photography, especially pictures she took of the Maine coast. Laurie truly loved caring for her patients because every day was exciting and she felt privileged to work beside the professional staff at EMMC.
Laurie is survived by her husband of 34 years, Stephen C. Provost; sisters, Marion Smith of Mount Vernon, Dianne Kirouac and her husband, Frank, of Harmony, Christine Liermann and her husband, Jerry, of Fond Du Lac, Wis., and Sharon Piper and her husband, George Evans; brothers, Lowell Piper and his wife, Karen, of Embden, Douglas Piper and his wife, Marcia Lomneth, of San Francisco, and Roland Piper and his wife, Cindy, of Corinna; parents-in-law, Arthur and Alice Provost; sisters-in-law, Julie King and her husband, Danny, and Kimberly Provost; nieces, Morgan Owens and her husband, Damon, Michelle Stinsman and her husband, John, and Mikaela King; nephews, Matthew King and Michael King; and a special home caregiver, Tina Ramsey. In addition to her parents, Laurie was predeceased by her brother, Sherwood Piper.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer, where relatives and friends are welcome to call noon until the time of service. Interment will be at a later date.
