THORNDIKE – Ernest G. Tweedie, 86, passed away Monday, March 11, 2013, at his residence. He was born Nov. 4, 1926, a son of the late Coburn and Flora (Clark) Tweedie.
Ernest served in the Navy during World War II. He worked for Rice and Miller Trucking Co. and also retired from 20 years as a postal carrier for the U.S Post Office in Thorndike. Ernest served 45 years as a volunteer firefighter for Thorndike Volunteer Fire Department. He also was a lifetime member of Sportsman Alliance of Maine, a member of Harvest Moon Grange, deputy of Maine State Grange, and also was a trainer for the hunting and safety course. Ernest was awarded the Ethel Kelly Award from Maine Municipal Association in 2003. He also served as town selectman in Thorndike and was a caregiver for many. Ernest enjoyed hunting and fishing trips with his family and friends. Throughout his retirement he enjoyed cutting wood and growing his potatoes. Ernest was most proud of his two grandsons that shot their first deer while hunting with him.
He leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Ruby (McLellan) Tweedie of Thorndike; three children, Linda Tweedie Dixon of Thorndike, Donna Shute and husband, Raymond, of Brooks, and Terrie Griffiths and husband, Wayne, of Lamoine; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and sister, Mary Kelley of Connecticut. Ernest was predeceased by three infant children; great-grandson, Austin J. Grant; and brother-in-law, John Kelley.
Interment will be held privately for the family in the spring.
