GLENBURN – Glenwood H. MacDougal, 78, passed away March 12, 2013, of liver cancer. Glen was born Aug. 12, 1934, in a farmhouse in Ripley.
In 1953 he graduated from Maine Central Institute and while there he played baseball. He entered the U.S. Army in 1954 under the GI Bill. He loved his three-year enlistment serving in Europe and the U.S. in the medical company. In 1957 he returned home where he entered Husson College and received an undergraduate degree in 1961. He continued his graduate work at St. Lawrence University from 1962 to 1963, and did some graduate work at University of New York at Oswego. He then enrolled in the graduate program at the University of Maine, Orono, and received his graduate degree in 1972. His main focus in life had been in the area of education. In 1960 he taught business courses and coached basketball at Allagash High School. He also taught in the business department at Franklin Academy, Malone, N.Y. From fall 1963 to 1966, he taught in the business department at Pulaski (N.Y.) Academy and Central High School, Pulaski, N.Y. From fall 1966, he taught in the business department at Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute, where he was head of the business department for 13 years. Glen taught business in New York and Presque Isle for 23 years. Glen and the love of his life, Helga, liked to travel around the state, especially back to Ripley to see the renovated farm house he grew up in, playing cards in the afternoon, and gardening. He also enjoyed playing “bad” golf, sports and history. He stayed in touch with a lot of his past pupils.
Glen is survived by one son, Brock MacDougal; sister, Gloria Cota; and brother, Gibb MacDougal. He also leaves behind his beloved companion, Helga Nason; buddy, Wayne O. Nason; and other family and friends. Glen was predeceased by a son, Travis “T” MacDougal. The family of Helga Nason and Wayne Nason thank Scott Nason for his caring support, the staff on the fourth floor at Eastern Maine Medical Center and Beacon Hospice for their excellent care in our time of need.
A memorial celebrating his life will be held at a later date at Sebec Village Community Christian Church, Sebec Village. Bea Violette will be officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Cowan Cemetery, Sebec Village. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Sebec Village Community Christian Church.
