TUCSON, Ariz. – Ethel Mae (Spencer) Thorpe, 88, died Feb. 28, 2013, in Tucson, Ariz. She was born in 1924, in Veazie, the daughter of Wyatt W. and Nellie (Veazie) Spencer.
She was a 1942 graduate of Bangor High School and a recipient of Charles E. French Medal. She later graduated from Beal Business College with an associate degree. Ethel’s hobbies were cooking, sewing and dancing. As a young woman, she taught ballroom dancing at Josephine Shanley’s Dance Studio, and during World War II she loved going to the United Service Organizations – USO, and The Chateau to dance, socialize and support the soldiers passing through Dow Field on their way overseas. After the war, she met Gil in Maine, and they married in Tucson, Ariz. They had been together for more than 66 years.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Lawrence Gil Thorpe; and two daughters, Lynn J. Hamilton, esquire, of Mesa, Ariz., and Jill E. Thorpe, esquire, and husband, Stephen Brault, of Tucson, Ariz.; grandson, Dr. Jarrett W. Hamilton and wife, Holly, along with three great-grandsons, Colin, Ethan and Quintin, of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; grandson, Justin Hamilton of Mesa, Ariz; sister, Mary Vanidestine of Bangor, and three sons, James and wife, Doris, Thomas and wife, Honey, and Danny and wife, Andria; a niece, Lois Russell of Veazie; and a nephew, Joseph King Jr. and wife, Barbra, of Veazie. Our enduring gratitude to the loving care given to her during her final months at Golden Hope Assisted Living Home and the care givers at Casa de la Luz Hospice, Tucson, Ariz.
