BUCKSPORT – Penney L. Ashmore, 60, fought a courageous battle with cancer, dying peacefully Saturday, April 6, 2013, surrounded by her loving family. Born July 27, 1952, in Bangor, she was the daughter of Glendon Littlefield and Carol (French) Gray.
Penney worked for Blue Hill Memorial Hospital for many years prior to her illness. She was a devoted mother and loving grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and enjoyed attending all special events that they participated in. When she couldn’t attend in person she would make sure she called to get updates. She had a very special bond with her son-in-law, Gregory. His nickname for her was “Gurt”. She enjoyed knitting, walking, spending time at camp and loved life. She was known to offer a helpful hand to those in need without ever wanting anything in return. She had a special fondness for penguins and was known to be called Penelope Penguin sometimes. Penney left a lasting impression on all those she encountered. She will be missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Melissa J. Tapley and husband, Gregory, of Bucksport; two adored grandchildren, Lisa and Nathan Tapley, both of Bucksport; mother, Carol J. Gray and husband, Alvertie, of Bucksport; five siblings, Glendon “Butch” Littlefield and wife, Julie, of Bucksport, Sherry Gray of Orland, Fred Littlefield and wife, Lucy, of Orland, Terry Kettell and partner, Sandy, of Bucksport and Cindy Jackson and husband, Mike, of Bucksport; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins; and a special aunt, Linda Leach of Penobscot. Penney was predeceased by her father and his wife, Glendon and Sandra (French) Littlefield; brother-in-law, Owen “Buddy” Gray; along with many aunts and uncles. Penney’s family would like to thank all of her family, friends and coworkers that were a support during her illness, whether it was spending time with her day and night, holding her hand, lending a shoulder to cry on, cooking her favorite meal or just being there. They were all appreciated more than they will ever know. Also, a special thank you to the hospice nurses; they provided comfort and support in this difficult time.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in the spring at Oak Grove Cemetery, Orland, with a gathering to celebrate her life to immediately follow. Donations may be made to Hancock County Homecare Hospice, P.O. Box 156, Blue Hill, ME 04614. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport. www.mitchelltweedie-young.com.
