READFIELD – John L. Moore of Readfield, Bowerbank and Moosehead Lake, left this world Saturday, April 27, 2013, after a brief illness. John was born in 1946, in Miami, to Lloyd W. and Julia E. Wasson Moore.
He attended schools in Miami and Dover-Foxcroft, and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Germany for three years until he was honorably discharged in 1967. He worked for a time as a lifeguard for the Town of Golden Beach, Fla., then was employed by Florida East Coast Railway, and Bangor & Aroostook Railroad after relocating permanently to Maine. He was later employed by State of Maine Bureau of General Services for many years until his retirement. John always loved the outdoors, fishing and hunting in earlier years, and was a skilled boatman. He was always at home on the water. John was more than an avid gardener. He was passionate about growing things: his vegetable garden, flowering plants and shrubs, his apple trees, house plants, and his seasonal herb garden; he truly had the proverbial green thumb. In later years his love and appreciation of nature showed in the care he gave to his elaborate winter bird feeders and the wildlife he enjoyed watching each day at camp. He was known among his wide circle of friends for his exceptional mechanical skills, and was admired and appreciated by those he helped throughout the years with advice, mechanical repairs and for his resourceful innovations and inventions. A natural teacher, John was very knowledgeable and loved sharing information and ideas on many topics. He was known for his generosity and took joy in helping others whenever the opportunity arose. In 2003, John realized the dream of a lifetime when he first soloed in his amphibious ultra-light, the “Eagle,” which he was able to enjoy for two more years.
John was predeceased by his parents; half brother, Lloyd Jr.; and many beloved dogs throughout the years, including Bowerbank’s Red Boss, Max, Frieda and Schuster. John’s friends and family will never forget the courage and dignity with which he faced the hand life dealt him, always displaying a positive outlook and interest in all the people around him. His sense of humor and zest for life will be greatly missed by those who loved him. He is survived by his longtime companion and partner, Anne Mitchell; son, John L. Moore Jr. and wife, Billie Jo, and precious grandchildren, Dylan Hardy and Lyllian Grace; sister and brother-in-law, Jeanne and Russ Drechsel; special niece and nephew, Lexie and Reed; and beloved Buddy, who never left John’s side after being rescued by him two years ago. The family wishes to sincerely thank everyone at Togus Springs Hospice Unit, Augusta, for their genuine caring and compassion during this difficult time.
A celebration of John’s life will be held July 21 in Moosehead.
