SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Richard “Dick” Wellington Homer, 85, passed away peacefully May 27, 2013, after a Memorial Day weekend with family and friends. Dick was born Sept. 22, 1927, in Fountain Hill, Pa.
He graduated from Proctor Academy, continued on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in industrial design from Alfred University, and master’s degrees in engineering and architecture from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dick was married to Roxanne “Rocky” Jones, Oct. 17, 1953, and they were married 58 years. Dick worked as an architect for more than 50 years, designing commercial, residential and marine projects, including the Pan American building in New York City. He enjoyed sailing, racing and race management around Great Harbor of Mount Desert.
Dick is survived by his daughters, Deborah Homer DuBois and husband, Bill, of Jamestown, R.I., Susannah Homer (Roy) of Southwest Harbor, and Sarah H. Fortin and husband, Marc, of Portland; grandchildren, Katherine Y. Roy of New Orleans, Zachary A. B. Fortin and Mikayla Fortin of Portland; brother, Stephen B. Homer and wife, Nancy Bristol Homer, of Southwest Harbor; nephews, Peter K. Homer and wife, Linda Stahl Homer, of Southwest Harbor, Christopher Rawls of Mount Desert, and Scott Homer and wife, Audrey Homer, of Ellsworth; nieces, Davian Rawls, Cindy Daman and husband, Bruce Daman, of Portland, Jennifer Burg and husband, Ken Burg, of Hingham, Mass., and Eliza Homer of Sedona, Ariz.; great-nieces and great-nephews, Matthew, Caroline and Emily Homer of Southwest Harbor, Alex and Abby Homer of Ellsworth, Amanda Homer, Lindsey Daman, Tyler Daman, Oren Rawls and wife, Ruth, and three children, and Arianna Rawls Fine and husband, Mike Fine. Alon Fine is the newest member at 5 months old. Dick was predeceased by his sister, Constance Homer of Southwest Harbor and Portland; and beloved wife, Roxanne.
The celebration of life will be held 11:30 a.m. Sunday, June 16, at The Birches, 46 Fernald Point Road, Southwest Harbor. A reception will be 1-3 p.m. Sunday. In case of rain, the gathering will be held at Mount Desert Island Community Sailing Center, 168 Clark Point Road, Southwest Harbor.
