BANGOR and CHESTER – George E. Rich Jr., 78, passed away June 26, 2013, at a Bangor nursing facility, after a courageous battle with cancer. Right to the very end he was as sharp as a tack. George was born Oct. 23, 1934, in Gardiner, son of George E. Rich and Theresa A. Brown.
George was married to the late Roberta Thomas Rich for 58 years. He is survived by three children and their spouses, Rebecca J. Rich of Biddeford, George E. Rich III and Paulette of Lee, and Lisabeth A. Hall and Steve of Woodville; three grandchildren, Aaron, Jason and Bethany Severance; three great-grandchildren; and his beloved greyhound, Lucy.
George attended school in Rangley and graduated in 1952. He met Roberta in Rangley where she worked summers. They were married July 2, 1954, in Illinois. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1953, which took him places such as New Zealand, South America, Korea and Antarctica just to name a few. While in Antarctica he became a member of the Royal Order of Deep Freeze. George’s career in electronics took him to places such as England, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong. He was able to travel the world and enjoyed it. George was proficient and skilled with firearms, with many trophies from competitions. He was an National Rifle Association instructor and owned Rich’s Sport Shop. George enjoyed learning new things, he learned the art of glass blowing and had his own neon sign shop, neo-glo. He and Roberta ran Thomas Motel, Lincoln, for 28 years. George also served on Lincoln Town Council. George and Roberta enjoyed their rescued greyhounds very much and in their earlier years their weimaraners. They also enjoyed snowmobiling and Sunday rides. George also had a passion for photography, he was never without his camera when he left the house. He got some great shots and even some aerials.
There will be no service per George’s request. There will be a private gathering with family and close friends 4 p.m. July 6 at Hall-Rich Cemetery, Woodville.
