PORTLAND, Maine — Bridges of Maine LLC, a private nonprofit organization the provides services to children and adults with mental and physical disabilities and autism, has agreed to pay $99,100 to settle claims involving improper billing to MaineCare for services rendered by an excluded provider, according to a press release issued Wednesday by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The United States Attorney’s Office filed a civil complaint alleging that Bridges of Maine violated the federal False Claims Act from June 12, 2007 through June 17, 2008, by inappropriately billing MaineCare for services rendered by a former licensed social worker who was excluded from participation in all federal health care programs. The complaint sought damages equaling the full amount of the false claims, along with statutory penalties.
Bridges of Maine, which has offices in Gray and Waterboro, cooperated in the investigation, according to the statement from U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II.
The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Office of Inspector General and the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Maine.
